While there she has achieved many successes, including improving board recruitment, retention, and satisfaction; streamlining and modernizing board management practices; raising non-dues revenue; and saving NAM members millions of dollars. “I’m excited to join the Hardwood Federation,” Cole said. “The impact small and medium-sized businesses have on our economy cannot be overstated, and I’m going to continue to impress upon Congress and the Administration how vital the Hardwood community is. Not just to jobs, but to a healthy and sustainable environment, to robust trade policies, and to green building. I’ll also be keeping the Hardwood Federation Political Action Committee moving forward in the hopes of hitting its 2012 fundraising goals.” Cole is looking forward to working with the Board for a successful Annual Fall Fly-in this September. She hopes the event will be widely attended and looks forward to meeting HF members there and at other opportunities as well. Washington, D.C.—Donna Harman of the American Forest & Paper Association recently reported on the forest industry campaign addressing the Ninth Circuit Court’s decision in Northwest Environmental Defense Center v. Brown (NEDC v. Brown)—the forest roads case. At a recent Hardwood Federation board meeting, Harman noted that the Ninth Circuit overturned a 35-year EPA regulation, holding that forest road runoff requires Clean Water Act point source permits. Prior to the Court’s decision, EPA had treated forest roads as non-point sources of pollution subject to regulation under state Best Management Practices (BMPs). A pending appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court is the near-term objective. Bryn Mawr, Pa. —Industrial Vision Systems Inc., based here, recently introduced its Vision Tally (VT) system for end-tally accuracy. According to the company’s newly re-designed website, www.visiontally.com, this system provides a new standard in end-tally accuracy. A brief description of how this state-of-the-art equipment operates is: VisionTally interacts with the chain-feed PLC and automatically feeds bundles into position for scanning. The system automatically scans and measures the actual width and length of each board using rugged, high-precision cameras and laser optics. Actual board measurements are then used to create nominal tallies using NHLA rules. The scanning, measuring, and tallying time is just two minutes per bundle, during which no personnel attention is required. Camas, Wash.—The Western Hardwood Association (WHA) recently introduced Zena Forest Products, Salem, Ore., as its newest member. Zena Forest Products manufactures Forest Stewardship Council certified Hardwood lumber and lumber products. Specialty items include: Oak, Maple and madrone lumber, stair parts and veneers. Marathon City, Wis.— Gus Welter is the new owner of Granite Valley Forest Products Inc., located here. “For l2 years, up until 2002 I was general manager of six treating facilities and lived in Peshtigo, Wis. In 2002 Universal Forest Products bought us out and I stayed on with them as vice president of operations up until this opportunity to buy Granite Valley Forest Products came along. “I think it’s important to note for all our customers and suppliers that one hundred percent of the staff/employees that were here before I purchased 48 Hardwoods Have Workability
