TRADE TALK Salamanca, N.Y.—Salamanca Lumber Co., Inc., based here, recently installed a new 75,000 board foot capacity dry kiln from Southeastern Installation Inc. (SII), located in Lexington, N.C. According to lumber buyer and salesman Nick Skudlarek, this installation will bring Salamanca Lumber’s total capacity to 1.15 million board feet. Salamanca Lumber Co. is a Hardwood concentration yard, which has 1,150,000 feet kiln capacity, 750,000 feet pre-dryer space and a Northfield roughing planer. The firm produces approximately 10 million board feet Nick Skudlarek (4/4 through 16/4 Hard Maple, Ash, Cherry, Red and White Oak) and exports 9 million board feet annually. They are upgrading their Cambridge facility with a linebar setworks upgrade and their Wellston facility with a new USNR carriage optimizer. Both upgrades will be done this summer. Pierce Lumber in Belle Plaine, Iowa, recently purchased a linebar upgrade from McDonough for their existing linebar unit. It will feature new press roll assemblies as well as spotting chains and a thin stock lifting device for their infeed table. The equipment will be shipped in August and installed right away. High Country Lumber & Mulch in North Wilkesboro, N.C., chose McDonough when upgrading their resaw area. They will be installing a used carriage and used McDonough 6-foot headrig, along with a new USNR carriage optimizer and surrounding log and lumber handling equipment. Installation is scheduled for August with a September start up. High Country also chose McDonough to help them with an edger upgrade project. McDonough will be building a new rotating sawbox, outfeed belt and finger picking system to be integrated into their existing Valley Machine edger they purchased in 2002. They are also upgrading their USNR scanners to a foursensor scan zone. Chisholm Lumber in Roslin, Ontario, Canada purchased a new 6-foot McDonough bandmill for their upcoming carriage area upgrade. Also in the project is a new USNR carriage optimizer. The equipment is scheduled for an August delivery with a September start up. Elkins Sawmill in Moncure, N.C. is having McDonough rebuild a McDonough 54-inch twin horizontal they recently purchased used. The rebuild will include a setworks upgrade to linear positioning setworks and a general overhaul of the machine. Asal Lumber in Cumberland, Va., recently installed their McDonough twosaw hands-free board edger system. The joystick controlled infeed system allows the operator to position the saws with laser lines on the board before being released into the machine. Parton Lumber Company’s new 6-foot twin band is currently being installed. On a MaxiMill end dogging system, it replaces machinery lost by fire at their Rutherfordton, N.C., facility. 46 Hardwoods...A Renewable Resource

Washington, D.C.—Dana Lee Cole has been named the third Executive Director of the Hardwood Federation. Cole’s appointment follows the announcement that Executive Director Deb Hawkinson has, after five years at the helm, accepted the position of President at the Forest Resources Association. “Dana is a great choice for the Hardwood Federation,” said Brad Thompson, President of Hardwood Federation. “She brings a wealth of experience in the public and private sectors, and has been Dana Lee Cole a senior association executive with key strengths in developing and executing strategic plans, building membership, leadership and successfully implementing great policies at the National Association of Manufacturing over the last several years that have strengthened and built its membership.” Cole, a native of Michigan, which is home to more than 250 Hardwood businesses, began her career working for Governor John Engler as a policy advisor. She then spent eight years with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation in several roles where she promoted small and large businesses in the state, and successfully negotiated regulatory disputes. Below is a picture of our sorter that helps us provide customized sorting and packaging. This is a view of our 50 bay sorter. Information about our sawmill, planer mill and lumber inventory is below: 1.) Our three sawmills cut 15 million board feet a year of fine Appalachian Hardwood lumber in 4/4 through 8/4 thicknesses in mostly Red Oak, White Oak and Poplar as well as Ash and Maple. Our crosstie mill manufactures about 100,000 board feet per week of crosstie and tie sides in species such as Hickory, Sycamore, Beech, Gum and Elm. In addition to the lumber we cut from our sawmill we also process another 12 to 15 million board feet of lumber per year through our Hardwood concentration yard business. We purchase and process all domestic species in all grades. 2.) Our modern planer mill runs two shifts to ensure on time shipments of our lumber to customers. We deliver kiln dried or air dried lumber and offer export preparation and on site container loading. 3.) We offer 600,000 board feet of fan shed inventory at all times, to provide efficient service to our customers. Kepley-Frank maintains an air dried inventory of 5,000,000 plus board feet of all species, to ensure back up inventory for our customers. *Through Jimmy Kepley acquiring Lexington Home Brandsʼ plant #2 in Lexington, N.C., and naming the operation Linwood Furniture, Inc., his company offers kiln dried lumber from Linwoodʼs eight dry kilns with a total dry kiln capacity of 600,000 board feet per charge. The furniture plant is also offering the service of contract furniture manufacturing and the manufacturing of wood components for other furniture manufacturers and other woodworking companies.
