CELEBRATING 60 YEARS Think quality, think Delta Consistently on grade Western Red Cedar, Yellow Cedar & Douglas Fir. WASHINGTON SCENE - Continued from page 29 in effect through 2019. For forest management, a new categorical exclusion from the Natural Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was established for hazardous fuels reduction on areas up to 3,000 acres. The deal also opens the way to more 20-year stewardship contracts, in which the Forest Service collaborates with states on forest management projects. These new contracts would give preferences to contracts that would promote innovative use of wood products, including cross-laminated timber. A simplified process for repair and rebuilding access roads in some areas of national forests was also included in the bill. Additionally, the agreement also includes languages to limit the effect of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ 2015 ruling in Cottonwood Environmental Law Center v. Forest Service that forced the Forest Service to consult more closely with the Fish and Wildlife Service on forest projects that might affect endangered species. Lobbyists for the forest products industry effectively helped frame the wildfire issue as one that goes well beyond forest fires in the West, drawing attention to the threats of disease and insect infestation in overstocked forests, especially in the Lake States and Eastern regions of the U.S. Actively involved in timber life cycle: we source, select, mill, manufacture & market. Perdue Applauds Approval of 2018 Farm Bill U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue recently issued the following statement regarding approval of the 2018 Farm Bill by the House Committee on Agriculture: “I commend Chairman Conaway and the House Committee on Agriculture for passing a comprehensive Farm Bill out of the Committee. We are encouraged that the Committee heard the voices of their constituents, who want to preserve and enhance programs contained in the 2014 Farm Bill, as I learned in my conversations with farmers, ranchers, foresters, and producers in 35 states in the last 12 months. “As the bill heads to the floor, I hope the House recognizes the long-term certainty it provides for America’s farmers, just as it preserves nutrition programs for people who need help feeding themselves and their families. The United States Department of Agriculture stands ready to provide technical assistance as the bill progresses in the House, and we look forward to working with our friends in the Senate as well. As Republicans and Democrats have farm interests in their own districts and states, we are hopeful that the 2018 Farm Bill can move forward in a bipartisan manner.” Indiana Lawmaker Plans to Reintroduce Legislation to Protect State Forests Democratic Rep. WASHINGTON SCENE - Continued from page 30 Indiana’s state forests after seeing the outcome of a timber cut that removed more than 1,700 trees in the Yellowwood State Forest. Pierce visited the forest recently after logging had finished, according to published reports. The state forestry division sold the timber to loggers for 0,000. In addition to protecting the forests, Pierce said he’s also trying to learn more about the forestry division’s stance that tree removals can be positive for forests and can promote healthy growth. State officials have defended the timber sale as selective logging that’s part of a well-researched forest management plan. In 2014, Pierce introduced a bill that would have protected areas of state-owned land in Yellowwood, Morgan-Monroe, Jackson- Washington and Clark state forests from motorized access, commercial activity and logging. The bill failed to pass. Pierce said he’s concerned about the devastation left in the wake of the recent logging in Yellowwood, and said he hopes to see up to 40 percent of the state’s forests protected from logging. “I think it’s very important for the public to be aware of what is going on in their state forests,” Pierce said. “Once it’s disturbed like this, it will take a while to come back, for this forest to regenerate.” ■ Wood done right Engineered Wood Products / Studs & Timbers Real Wood Siding / Softwood Plywood WWW.SOFTWOODBUYER.COM Roseburg.com 800.245.1115 Softwood Forest Products BuyerMay/June 2018 Page 31
