RICHARDSON TIMBERS -

RICHARDSON TIMBERS - Continued from page 4 Tru-Ruff is Richardson Timbers’ latest step in custom manufacturing. The equipment is proprietary to Richardson Timbers and the company is in the process of trademarking the name and process. Tru-Ruff creates a special textured finish on the wood while removing band marks from the saw blades. Tru-Ruff also cleans stains on the timber for a consistent finish all around the material. While many custom manufacturers can easily get overwhelmed by orders of all sizes needing to be finished at once, Richardson Timbers maintains a level of efficiency that prevents delays. Hursh said, “If an order of corbels is less than 500 pieces, we can typically fill the order within three to five days. Lucio has done a great job of training our other millworkers on the saws. For orders exceeding that number, a standard turnaround would be approximately 10 days.” Hursh continued, “But we aren’t just grabbing the products off the shelf and throwing them in the back of a truck for shipment. We put the product through our Tru-Ruff and sometimes through the cleaner. With every order we are taking some extra step to enhance the value of the material.” Surls noted, “It can add some time on an order, but we can source a special species of timber request for a client. Recently we had an order for pecan timbers. The timbers were to be used for stair treads for a large staircase project. We may not stock all species, but we can source any material on request.” The team at Richardson Timbers is made up of 24 individuals. They include members of the warehouse/manufacturing team, logistics and sales. The longest serving of these employees is Martinez, followed closely by Hursh and several employees have been with the company over 10 years. Surls said, “We’re proud to have such long-serving team members. Lucio is a great mentor to all our millworkers, teaching them the particulars of running the band saws, moulders and how to distress Continued on page 45 Additional photos on page 45 An exterior view of the newest building at Santa’s Wonderland is shown here using 1x12 and 1x2 Douglas Fir to create board and batten siding. We also have a great support staff that in addition to Steven includes Jill, Susie, James and Nick Zilliken, who also calls on customers in North and East Texas. They work constantly with the production team to give the best possible customer service.” What’s next for Richardson Timbers? After nearly 70 years as a one plant operation in the same location, the company is expanding to a second locale. Approximately 200 miles from the Dallas mill, Richardson Timbers recently purchased a 5-acre site in Marble Falls, TX, where an office, showroom and distribution center broke ground in April. Surls noted, “It’s located in the premier business and technology park for that area of the country. The facility will initially be for office, showroom and distribution and have some limited manufacturing capability, but the site is primarily being designed as an education center for the Hill Country Region of Texas. We will stock material and that will be an additional convenience for our customers, but the real purpose of the central Texas facility will be to enable us to have direct contact to show our customers and their customers what we can do and what material is designed for and be able to share and discuss ideas with them that they have and how we can implement that into their plan.” David Lawrence, who currently handles sales and customer service in the Central Texas and Houston markets, will become manager of the Marble Falls facility and base his sales office there. Even as the company flexes with a new location, Surls and the entire team at Richardson Timbers plan to stick with their original goal: whether you buy 1 or 100 of their products, you’ll receive the same level of customer service and support. ■ This picture is of a Richardson Timbers truck leaving the company’s Dallas mill for one of its daily delivery runs throughout Texas.
