SUMMARY
Lithuanian National Transport Development Programme indicates that one major
problem in the largest Lithuanian cities - traffic jams. Efforts are being made to reduce the
negative impacts of traffic jams, but there is the lack of one comprehensive approach, so the aim
of this study is to design a combined passenger travel promotion research study implementing
PARK & RIDE, BIKE & RIDE and other concepts.
It is impossible to manage without the public transport in the largest cities and
suburban areas and it is indicated in urban centers, that the public transport should carry 70-80 %
passengers. To achieve this, the public transport should be more convenient and faster than private
cars. Therefore a rational division of work between the public and private transport is very
common in the international practice. These systems are: PARK&RIDE, PARK&RAIL,
BIKE&RIDE, KISS&RIDE, BIKESHARING, PARK&GO.
This study presents the description of all mentioned combined transport systems,
operating principles and application areas, taking advantage of foreign experience. The manual of
above mentioned schemes and conceptual solutions are proposed for the largest Lithuanian cities -
Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and Lithuanian resort - Druskininkai. This study, designed by Ministry
of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania initiative, of combined passenger
travel promotion research study, implementing PARK & RIDE, BIKE & RIDE and other
concepts, is dedicated to Lithuanian municipalities, public authorities, public institutions, to the
society and other interested parties to familiarize with the systems under consideration, their
application methods, operating principles and applications of assumptions.
