International Documentary to show what it takes to study abroad Photo: Auke Pluim Studying abroad sounds great. Graduating from a famous university whilst having fun in a foreign country, but is this true? The fact of the matter is that IBMS programs have a national average of a fifty percent drop-out rate. To prevent students from making the wrong choices, the MIM academy is making a documentary about IBMS students to show what it takes to be an IBMS student. Since September, six students have been making a weekly video diary in which they tell about their experiences as IBMS students. Danny Ngo Nguyen is one of the students taking part in the movie. “In the diary, I answer questions we get from the teacher, but we also have room to improvise. Like the first time I saw snow, I thought the subject should be snow.” Nguyen also uses his diary to talk about the problems he faces as a Saxion student. “When I come home and there is no one to talk to, I start talking to the camera. For instance about the work we have to do in groups. With all kinds of different nationalities it is sometimes hard to work together. These problems I can tell the camera. IBMS is a hard and intensive study. With this movie, future students know what they can expect when deciding to follow this study. Whatever happens with me, I know that my story will help others” produce a film of around twenty minutes. The documentary will be available on the Saxion website for prospective students to watch. The idea for the documentary came from first-year coordinator Thierry Tartarin. With the film, Tartarin does not want to put future students off, but intends to provide practical feedback. “We are committed to helping students as much as possible. We want to create awareness of how different the education system works here as well as effects of the culture shock and difficulty with studying in English. This should make a positive contribution to the students’ process of decision-making process. We believe this initiative will contribute to increasing the number of students passing their first year.” Willem Korenromp The students will end their video diaries at the end of February.
