Abstract
The present work is a study about rural houses in the state of Minas
Gerais which date from the 18 th and 19 th centuries. The chosen region
is that of the southern part of Grande river basin in the territory of
Minas Gerais.
The above mentioned houses belong to farms raised during a period
which extends from the second half of the 18 th century, marked by the
decay of the golden rush in Minas Gerais, to the end of 19 th century,
marked by the changes brought by the Proclamation of Republic, the
abolition of slavery and the arrival of the railway locomotives. This
period reflects the ruralization and the economic and social isolation
of the region which, in its turn, reflects upon the arquitecture,
characterized basically by the use of the same building technique
(independent wooden structures and stud and mud structures), by
the same implementation and by the use of similar programs of needs,
obtaining, most times, the same plantic result.
This work came out as a result of bibliographic and field research
developed between 1996 and 1997, under the tutorship of professor
Antônio Luiz Dias de Andrade, as part of the program of scientific
initiation. During this period, 73 farms were studied, drawn (drafting,
implementation, façades and details) and photographed.
The wok was exhibited at Architecture College of Porto University,
Portugal, in 1998 and at Architecture and Urbanism College of
University of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2000.
