ABSTRACTIn 2012, the Earth’s population has more than 7 billion inhabitants. Their energy, water, health and housing needs must be furnished by Civil Engineering, in order toprovide dignity and decent standard of living for them. The accelerated growth in thelast centuries generated the necessity of a new social and environmental approach.Building have been recognized as one of the most intensive user of natural resourcesand this activity produces a significant amount of waste and Green House Gas(GHG) emition. Power and energy industries are relevant producers of GHG emitionstoo, and renewable energy development is a worldwide necessity. In particular, hydropower energy is a great option to minimize GHG emitions, and Brazil has a bighydropower potential and the nation has an integrated transmition grid that permits tooptimize the energy availability. Most of the eletricity power used in Brazil is obtainedfrom Hydropower plants and the country has a enormous potential to be used toenergy supply. In spite of the benefits of hydropower plants, their development has asignificant society distrust and rejection. This paper aims to furnish arguments todiscuss about dams, their effects and safety. In order to enlight the several physicalconcepts analized, this document presents the main wordwide Stability AnalysisCriteria, and performed a sensitivity analysis on Rolled Compacted Concrete GravityDams typical cross section. The studied parameters are dam heigth, rock-concreteinterface strength parameters, downstream slope and foundation slope. The resultsshow the relevance of geological parameters investigations and the relationship damshape X heigth. Keywords: dams, concrete, stability analysis, concrete gravity dam
