ResumoA análise da formação da sociedade americana, passa atualmente pelo significado do povoamento edespovoamento do território piauiense e, questiona o pensamento dominante na historiografia queenfatiza a formação dos "primeiros núcleos de povoamento" e "conquista do território", sem levar emconta a perspectiva dos povos pré-históricos e das populações nativas que habitavam toda a região eforam extintas pela guerra da colonização. Há o deslocamento do eixo de análise predominante, poisé importante ter-se em vista três tipos de povoamento: o pré-histórico, o nativo e o colonial, só assimtem-se a compreensão exata de como se deu a organização social americana.
