ABSTRACTIt is known that the domestic sewer is mainly constituted water molecules and asmall quantity of organic solid substances, suspended and dissolved, besides thepresence of the pathogenic and nonpathogenic microorganisms. Although the siltrepresents only of 1% 2% of the volume of the treated sewer, its management issufficiently complex and expensive in the systems of sewer treatment. The finaldestination of the sludge is complex choice, however its important of the economicpoint of view, and necessary to decrease the risks that can be brought by thisresidue in the nature. In the WTW UFES system there are two stages oftreatment, the anaerobic treatment through UASB reactor (concentrated and wellstabilized sludge), followed of an aerobic treatment, corresponding to thesubmerged aerated biofilters, (stabilized silt and little not concentrated). As analternative to reduce the sources of sludge production, all the sludge originatedduring the laudering of the biofilters recirculates to the entrance of the station. Thehydrolysis is a promising technology in the minimization of the discarded sludge ofthe sewer stations; therefore it can increase the solubilization of solid substancespresent in the sludge; to promote the dehydration of the sludge; to reducepathogenic microorganisms or to suppress the scum formation. Knowing thebehavior of the microbial biomass is essential not only for the control of theprocess but also for its otimization. The efficiency of the process depends, therefore, of the specific metanogenic activity (AME) of the sludge, that is, of itscapacity to transform intermediate substrata of the anaerobic digestion intomethane (CH4) and carbonic gas (CO2). Therefore, it was expected, in thisresearch, to evaluate in laboratorial scale, the potential of the samples of anaerobicsludge, proceeding from the WTWUFES, submitted previously to the chemicalhydrolysis processes, through the test of specific metanogenic activity (AME).Traditionally used parameters for the observing of the system treatment, as forexample, SSV and DQO had been evaluated. The biomass was collected in theheights of 0,25m and 1,25m of UASB reactor and the used substrata were sodiumacetate and the hidrolisated sludge 0,25m and 1,25m with NaOH. The test wascarried through an automatic anaerobic respirometer, composed of eight reactors, each one with a volume of 550 ml. The UASB+Bfs system of the WTWUFESproduces an effluent with an average characteristic of 89 mg/l (SST), 180 mgO2/l(DQO) and 86 mgO2/l (DQO filtrada ). The hidrolisated sludge on 1,25m wasconsiderable increasing in the solubilization of the organic substance, showingdata of DQO filtrated in To = 271,0 mgO2/l and in the T8=3241,6 mg/O2.. Thebiomass in the height 0,25m showed bigger data of AME when added the acetatesubstrata, alkaline hydrolysis of the sludge 0,25m, and alkaline hydrolysis of thesludge 0,25m; while the biomass in the height 1,25m worked better in alkalinehydrolysis of the sludge, alkaline hydrolysis of the sludge 0,25m (sedimentedfraction) and in the fractions sedimented and sobrenadante of the sludge 1,25m.
