The Safest Water Dispenser in the Philippines

They say that water is the lifeblood of all

things. It’s necessary for healthy living

and a happy mood. However, the ironic

thing is, a lot of people in urban areas in

the Philippines just don’t drink enough. For some

reason, office workers and frequent over-timers

aren’t hydrated enough. It may be the stresses of the

corporate life, the stigma that the only beverages

one needs in this day and age are coffee and alcohol,

or the inadequacy of the current water dispenser

in the office. TOSOT may not have a solution to

change the working or drinking behaviors of

people, it does have one of the best solutions for the

third reason: the TOSOT Water Dispenser.

Its two types, the Bottom Load Water Dispenser

and Table Top Water Dispenser, are kitted with a

wide array of features aimed to appease the

thirstiest of people.

It’s not every day an employee comes up to their

office water dispenser and, while filling their

tumbler, thinks about how they can have better

quality drinking water—it’s simply an uncommon

thought but one that is definitely worth thinking

about. Like all things, problems appear when one

looks closely and takes in the daily routines of

getting water.

One such hassle of the everyday drinking water

dilemma is the awkwardness of being the person

who has to replace the gallon-large bottles of water.

For those who actively avoid the gym, this task is

counterintuitive—you have to lift and break a sweat

to get a cold refreshing drink.

Luckily, the TOSOT Water Dispenser promises no

more lifting and no more back pain when loading

a water container. With a 304 stainless water tank,

the TOSOT Water Dispenser is a beautifully crafted

endorser of ease of use. The bottom loading water

dispenser is personally tailor fit for hassle-free wa-

10

ter container loading, giving even the most averse

to the weight rack an easier time with quenching

their thirst. All they really need to do is push the

large bottle in and you’re good to go!

Also, unlike run-of-the-mill water dispensers found

in most buildings, the TOSOT Water Dispenser

also offers three faucets that pour water with

different temperatures: hot, cold, and lukewarm.

This eliminates the second type of water-related

hassles, which is becoming a chemist as you

frantically mix hot and cold together to get your

perfect warm water mixture.

As a bonus, the TOSOT Water Dispensers also have

a certain sleekness to their design. While most

people imagine a white, plastic contraption

supporting a large, awkward cylinder of water, these

dispensers sport a cleaner, sleeker metallic look that

fits like a glove to most minimalistic and

modernized office and workspaces right now.

Common finishes include black, silver, and stainless

steel.

They are also the perfect size and are able to fit

smoothly anywhere. If you’re concerned about

where you would place the TOSOT Water

Dispenser, then know that both variants have their

rightful places anywhere. TOSOT’s bottom

loading water dispenser is sleek and flat, and

placing this water dispenser in any corner is like

fitting the last little piece in the last space of the

magnificent corporate puzzle. For a more

personalized setup, TOSOT’s table top water

dispenser is the perfect low key water dispenser

that does not infringe upon the overall theme of the

workplace.

Lastly, the TOSOT two Water Dispenser variants

dispense only clean, high quality water. It’s a

simple detail most would overlook, but different

water dispensers dispense water that “tastes”

different, if only a tad bit. The various tastes are

nuanced but ultimately speak a reality about the

water dispensers: that both the brand and the

model matter. With TOSOT’s two water dispensers,

water is purified, cooled to perfection, and comes

out looking like liquid diamond. The taste is subtle

and perfect for thirsty throats and hits the mark of

refreshing all those who need a healthy drink every

now and then.

So, whether you’re working in a humble start-up

or have cemented yourself in one of the biggest

agencies and companies in the Philippines, you and

everyone else requires the water of TOSOT’s two

types of water dispensers to kit the office pantry,

hallways, executive rooms, meeting rooms, and

other such places. Because as they say, staying

hydrated is good for the mind, body, and soul,

and with the TOSOT Water Dispensers just right

around the corner, you can constantly and easily

stay refreshed, hydrated, and focused as you burn

the midnight oil.

How to Find The Magic of Industry 4.0

I believe that when it comes to industry 4.0, the

true potential of your enterprise is not in what it

does, but what it can do. The potential of your team

is not what they can do today, but what they could

do in the future. The opportunity doesn’t lie in what

we know, it’s in what we don’t know yet.

The rate of change in the modern world is

staggering and it shows no sign of slowing down

– in fact, it is speeding up. Industry 4.0 is both an

example of this, and a result of it. Digital transformation

is at the heart of fundamental societal

changes that are emerging. In the region that I lead

for Rockwell Automation – specifically the Middle

East, Turkey and sub-Saharan Africa – there are

huge changes in progress.

Let’s start with the Middle East. It’s an area that is

no stranger to change, with great cities having risen

from the deserts – as well as great economies. And

the industrial change in the area now is one of rapid

diversification as whole new industries are

envisioned at national levels and realized at

break-neck speeds. Turkey, the ancient empire(s),

bridging Europe with Asia, bridging tradition with

future, bringing cultures together, is another

market with enormous potential and possibilities

for growth, always in a cycle of changes and

reinventing itself.

The continent where everything started for

humanity is set to reassert its position in our future.

In sub-Saharan Africa, the population is projected

to double by 2050. In fact, in the next 30 years the

world’s population is set to grow by an incredible

2bn – an increase of more than 25% - and a large

portion of that growth will be in sub-Saharan

Africa. This exponential population growth comes

at a time when the largest demographic for this

region will be of working age – a fact that points to

the potential for huge economic growth. Growth,

incidentally, that will be championed by the digital

generation.

The opportunities for industrial enterprises in these

regions are evident. There is no doubt that the

enterprises meeting the needs of the new markets

by leveraging Industry 4.0 technologies and

strategies are the ones that will succeed.

For most enterprises though, leveraging Industry

4.0 technologies requires strong change

management capacity. It requires learning new

skills rapidly, investing in the workforce, investing

in new approaches, systems and technologies. It

requires embracing disruptive technologies – and

often it will entail being a positive disruptor.

12

Finding the Magic

We’ve probably all seen the diagram of two circles

that don’t overlap, where one is labelled “your

comfort zone” and the other is labelled “where the

magic happens.” It’s one of those that you look at

and instantly recognize the truth of – and perhaps

with a tiny sinking feeling as you realize that

maybe, you should get out of your comfort zone a

little more.

The implicit message of that diagram is that

“magic” requires change. It is something I believe

very strongly, and I’m inspired by the words of Walt

Disney (who knew more than most about magic):

“If you can visualize it, if you can dream it, there’s

some way to do it.”

I can’t think of a better message for industrial

enterprise leaders in this era of change. We stand

with the makers, the doers, the builders; the

innovators. Our most successful customers in

adopting industry 4.0 approaches have taken the

step of visualizing. They have dreamed of what

could be done. By coupling this human ingenuity

and innovation with the power of machines and

Rockwell Automation solutions – we always find a

way to do it.

That’s where the magic of Industry 4.0 happens.

Take a look just outside your comfort zone, the

benefits are close at hand, but industry leaders must

embrace change to find them.

If you can visualize a bright future for your

enterprise, come and talk to us, and we’ll help you

connect the imagination and ingenuity of your

people with the intelligence of machines to make it

happen.

FEATURE STORY

11 Must Have Products

In Your Jobsite

A complete job site is a safe job site. It’s how you

want things to be, especially for your hardworking

men. The work area, like any other office, should

have the complete tools to be efficient and

time-bound.

In other words, these are the necessary tools to have

if you want your construction job to be smooth

sailing.

Here are some of the products you should have at

hand in your construction site:

1. WELDING SOLUTIONS

The welding equipment is the first thing every job

site should take into account. And the best welding

solutions come from Lincoln Electric.

Their welding machines are extremely versatile

and capable of both small home projects and big

commercial demands. It works smoothly in

soldering various types of metals and has a long

lifespan. It is easy to use and has low electric

consumption.

2. THREADING & PIPE FABRICATION

ease that you haven’t overlooked any important

construction details.

4. DRAIN CLEANING

Drain cleaning is one of the lesser joys in erecting a

building. However, the strenuous task shouldn’t be

taken lightly because it’s the plumbing your

building will have for a long time. You wouldn’t

want your credibility ruined just because the drains

are clogged or dirty.

With RIDGID’s ® Drain cleaning machine,

cleaning drains are easy and long-lasting. Plus,

the new RIDGID® FlexShaft drain cleaning

machines are lightweight, so they’re easy to lug

around the Jobsite without requiring extra

manpower and effort.

5. POWERTOOLS

which have a longer than usual lifespan from most

power tool accessories.

7. LIGHTING SOLUTIONS

No job site is complete without lighting solutions.

If not, it can pose hazardous threats for you and

your workers. We’re talking about men working

through the day and the dark of night, so the

lighting equipment you should have in your

arsenal has excellent quality.

Pelican® is now offering the 9490 Remote Area

Lighting System (RALS), which is a mobile lighting

solution you can whip out any time you want. It

has over 6000 lumens and 3 preset light levels. The

perfect lighting for construction in dark areas.

8. MATERIAL HANDLING SOLUTIONS

Another product every construction site need is

a storage space for their materials and tools.

Proper storage is vital in any job site, especially

when taking tools into account. You wouldn’t want

any important equipment to go amiss when you

need it the most.

For great storage solutions, trust in Storageworks,

Durham, Stanley, or Toh. These four brands manufacture

great material handling solutions. All of

them highly durable with a flexible price range for

any budget.

9. DOOR HARDWARE SOLUTIONS

Doors are essential parts of any infrastructure,

residential or commercial. So if you’re in a job site,

varieties of styles, affordable hardware, and even

manufactures customized door materials.

Chubbsafes is an exceptional safety vault for

your valuable items at any given jobsite.

10. PLUMBING SOLUTIONS

Plumbing is an important matter for every job

site. Without proper plumbing, your building is in

danger of flooding or water damage. That’s an even

bigger issue for the future.

Get it right today with Dyson or Delta plumbing

solutions. They provide high-grade piping systems

and materials for both buildings and houses. They

last longer and offer the more cost-efficient prices

compared to other products in the market.

11. CLEANING SOLUTIONS

Cleaning time is the signal your job is near its end.

Finish your new infrastructure with the best

cleaning solutions out there from RIDGID ®,

Nilfisk, or Viper. They can scrub your job site

clean and ready for its occupants.

Especially Nilfisk ® which is an established leader

in cleaning technology. They offer a wide range of

industrial vacuums, sweepers, and scrubbers in the

DIGITAL

MARKETING

Digital Marketing has been proven

time and again as a wondrous tool in

boosting profit and engaging more customers

in the past. Yet still, it remains

an alien topic to some. Most of them

claims to be left in the dark who didn’t

know how to start. On the other hand,

one can never deny how investing in

digital marketing can level your way

up ahead and beyond.

Most customers spend more time

in the internet than physically shop.

And how do you think your company

will survive the airtight competition

when your place online is still nowhere

to be found? Digital promotion is a

strong suit in introducing new products

and reintroducing older brands.

These are just few good reasons

why you need to have Search Engine

Optimization (SEO) on your side. It

has the ability to improve the online

business listings. Good SEO will give

the best chance to rank in Google

search and maps.

In all areas of Unites States, online

sales are growing virtually online. So,

whether you like it or not, just like any

other sector and businesses, HVAC

industry is moving in that direction.

Another thing is, online reviews today

have weights. Studies have shown

that products with online reviews or

personal recommendations have 88%

consumers trust. This is a sole reason

why you need to expand in the online

community so people would recognize

your company. While promoting your

quality product, building a mobile-friendly

website of your company

will surely make a difference.

This is for a fact, consumers before

they buy air conditioners, they first

ask a friend on how’s the performance

of the air conditioner he/she bought

the last time. Today, consumers before

buying a brand would look on reviews

and views it gets online. HVAC industry

will soon follow this path so make

sure you put your best foot forward in

this.

Nearly Zero Energy Buildings

In an interview, ASHRAE’s

President Bjarne W. Olesen

said that sustainability is a

major goal for the decades

to come, and that it is achievable.

“We expect NZEBs (Nearly

an economic driver for

their success, a success that

needs to be applauded. Asia

is moving rapidly towards an

According to the IEA’s

executive director,

Fatih Birol, “Growing

electricity demand for

air conditioning is one of the

most critical blind spots in today’s

energy debate. With rising

incomes, air conditioner

ownership will skyrocket, especially

in the emerging world.

While this will bring extra comfort

and improve daily lives, it is

Air

The IEA study explained

that one of the biggest

drains on the air conditioning

pull could come

from India. Today, air conditioning

in India constitutes to

around 10 percent of India’s

entire electricity usage. However,

the report has pointed

out that it could increase to 45

percent air conditioning usage

by 2050 given the population

trends and economic growth of

the country.

As global temperatures continue

to rise, the need for air

conditioning will increase as

well for more people to stay

comfortable. The IEA’s solution

is to encourage more efficient

air conditioning units that uses

less electricity to operate. Their

study noted that the air conditioning

units that are sold in

Europe and Japan are often 25

percent more efficient that units

that are sold throughout the

United States and China.

The study also warned that

“large investments in new power

plants to meet peak power

demand at night” are needed.

“Setting higher efficiency standards

for cooling is one of the

easiest steps governments can

take to reduce the need for

new power plants, and allow

them at the same time to cut

emissions and reduce costs,”

Birol said.

HVAC Trends

Every Engineer

Needs to Know

Here are the new trends to watch out for in HVAC.

Heating, ventilation, and air

conditioning (HVAC)

technology, which aims to

cater environmental comfort

both for indoor and vehicular

use, has evolved all through

the years. These changes are

due to the varying trends in

technology and the demands

of the customers.

As diverse HVAC needs arise,

we saw emerging new trends

and practices geared to improve

the industry. During the

International Air-Conditioning,

Heating, Refrigerating

Exposition (AHR Expo) 2018

76

(ASHRAE) revealed that

boosting HVAC energyefficiency

is the prime focus

of the industry in the future.

But that’s not all. There are

also other trends that are

expected to emerge including

the integration of technology

and the potential effect of

construction in the industry.

Digital Technology & Data

Mining

The involvement of technology

is one trend dominating the

narrative for HVAC industry.

Most HVAC businesses will

automate sales and services

resulting in lower cost and

competitive pricing. The

traditional way of working with

pen and paper is now

replaced with a much

quicker and more efficient

method using computers and

software. Everything boils

down to creating a remarkable

service experience for

customers.

Going wireless in this age is

an apparent trend. No wonder

why most industries are now

utilizing mobile devices for

quicker transactions and

easier transfer of data.

Building managers can now

use smartphone apps to

control lighting, ventilation,

and other processes simply

with the click of a button.

Smart devices foster improved

measurements of data,

paving the way for more

efficient HVAC systems.

HVAC businesses also need

to consider digital marketing

which is the most effective

way to reach more potential

customers. This involves the

use of SEO (Search Engine

Optimization) to rank better on

Google, software and other

online tools. Most customers

will check online reviews

before deciding to avail of a

company’s services.

Data mining through the

Internet of Things (IoT)

sensors will also be a huge

trend leading to a faster, more

accurate and real-time

transfer of data using

cloud-based technology.

Real-time data and metrics,

which can be accessed via

internet or Wi-Fi, are now very

imperative to HVAC

businesses.

Eco-friendly Innovations for

Green Building

More and more people are

getting conscious of the

possible impact of their

everyday activities on the

environment. With this, more

eco-friendly trends arise even

in the field of construction

and HVAC. Since sustainable

buildings cost lesser to

maintain, an increasing

number of people prefers

green building and

architecture for both

residential and commercial

buildings.

Some innovative HVAC

solutions that are ecofriendly

include the use of

variable refrigerant flow, LED

lighting, and solar power. It is

also expected that more

energy efficient products

which will perform better

mechanically will be released

in the near future, especially

that customers are in the

lookout for them.

Efficiency and reduced

environmental impact are the

focus of these new products.

The upcoming new

technologies will help prevent

heat loss, co-opt renewable

energy sources, reclaim

dissipated heat, and others.

Once out in the market, these

new technologies will aid with

indoor air quality and building

automation control.

B E S T S T O R I E S O F 2 0 1 9

Construction Industry’s

Effect on HVAC

Whether we like it or not,

construction and HVAC will

always go together. With more

new buildings being

constructed, there will also be

an increase in HVAC unit

installations. This is true for

both residential and

commercial buildings.

Data shows that in 2014, there

is a 4.2% rise in nonresidential

construction

project. This increased to 7%

in the year 2016. There is also

an increase in the need of

HVAC installations for lodging

construction projects (11.3%),

office (14.7%) and commer-

cial construction (8.4%), and

sewage disposal construction

(13.6%). Despite the increase

in construction projects, there

is no guarantee that this will

continue to rise in the near

future.

The increase of new

installations is a positive thing

since this also means an

added market for maintenance

and repair. Although the

maintenance sector will

continue to get more

customers, there could be a

plummeting number of new

installations unless some units

need total replacement.

90

Adapting to

Trends

The changing trends in the

HVAC industry are not

merely focused on releasing

new units that vary on looks

and minute features. Instead,

it is geared toward automating

HVAC systems that will

benefit the users and will have

a lesser environmental impact.

Aside from improved products,

HVAC companies also reform

their existing processes for

better customer service and

enhanced efficiency.

Although the industry

experienced a recession in

late 2007, there is a positive

light as its demand grows

year after year. This signifies

a bright future for the HVAC

industry. -end-

5 Secrets to Maximizing

Your HVACR Efficiency

The key to HVACR efficiency is how to get more while

using less

Accounting for $17 billion

energy cost in recent data in

North America alone, HVACR

systems are undoubtedly one

of the most used and in

demand systems to date. With

HVACR consuming around

50 to 60 percent of the total

energy cost in the US, starting

to use them at their optimal

capacity will surely do the

world good. Knowing the

proper ways of managing

HVACR efficiency is the first

step to saving millions, if not

billions, of energy cost.

112

113

B E S T S T O R I E S O F 2 0 1 9

Common Terms Used in HVACR

Energy Efficiency

But before managing

HVACR efficiency, it is

best that you familiarize

yourself with various kinds of

ratings you will surely

encounter with your

temperature control system.

HSPF (Heating Seasonal

Performance Factor) is the

ratio of heat pump efficiency of

your system. Heat pumps are

responsible for producing hot

and cool air depending on its

cycle. Basically, HSPF is the

measure of the entire space

heating needed in British

Thermal Unit (BTU) divided

by the total kilowatt-hour the

heat pump is consuming. The

higher this number is, the more

efficient is your heat pump.

SEER (Seasonal Energy

Efficiency Ratio) is mainly the

ratio of the system’s cooling

output (measured in BTU)

and the power it exhausts in

an hour (measured in

kilowatt-hour). Higher SEER

number means higher HVAC

energy efficiency your

system provides. The good

thing about SEER is that it

is based on actual seasonal

cooling and not on predefined

laboratory measures.

EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio)

is comparable to SEER but

used the predefined

laboratory conditions rather

than the real ones. Similarly,

higher EER equates to higher

system efficiency.

Five Ways of Managing HVACR Energy

Efficiency

1. Use Programmable Thermostats

and Controls

Automation has been the

number one answer to

everyone’s problems. With the

widespread use of automation

in various fields, HVACR

systems are no exception.

Smart controls and

thermostats are quite in

demand nowadays simply

because they are convenient

and user-friendly. You will

never have to worry about

forgetting to switch off your

lights and HVACR systems

since these devices can turn

them off when no person is

present in a room and can be

easily accessed anywhere and

anytime with just about any

smartphone.

2. Be Consistent in

Maintaining the

System

Regular maintenance does

serve a huge purpose in

getting the most out of your

HVACR systems. HVACR

companies can suggest the

best maintenance schedule

that will suit your usage. It is

ideal that your temperature

control system is inspected

at the beginning and end of

cooling seasons to achieve its

highest efficiency. Not only is

this maintenance good to get

the most out of your HVACR,

but it is also advisable so you

can prevent any future

damages and issues with your

system. Prevention is better

than cure!

3. Switch Off Other Household Gadgets

Computers, exercise

equipment, TVs, washing

machines and dryers, and

other power-consuming

electronics in the home are

best plugged out when not in

use. These devices are not

only consuming 5 to 10

percent of the overall

residential energy use but also

generating more heat in the

home. Turning off these

dormant appliances will allow

your temperature control

systems to consume less

energy to cool down the house

since there is less heat

circulating inside. There is no

better way to save money and

achieve maximum residential

energy efficiency than

combining HVACR energy

efficiency with the overall

home energy efficiency.

4. Regularly Change Air Filters

Most homeowners do not

realize how much clogged air

filters can affect the HVACR

energy efficiency in their

households. Air filters are the

major reasons why the system

slows down and consumes

more power than usual. With

the amount of dirt that

accumulates in these filters

over time, the dust then sticks

to motor parts and blades

causing them to run at a lower

speed than they are designed.

Changing your filters regularly

maintains the cleanliness of

your system which then

maximizes the energy

efficiency it can provide.

124

H V A C R

L E A D E R S

5. Insulate the Vicinity

Your HVACR system will

consume more power and

energy if it is running inside

a poorly insulated building

where most of the conditioned

air is lost due to any cracks or

openings in the room. When

the system detects that the

room has reached its desired

temperature, it lessens its

power consumption. But since

the room does not trap the air

efficiently, the HVACR system

keeps on consuming more

energy. It is best to insulate

an HVACR room before using

the system to make sure the

conditioned air is trapped and

circulating properly. Insulating

materials with high r value are

ideal for keeping the

vicinity insulated. Also

consider insulating ducts,

pipes, and outlets as well

since some of them might

have small unseen openings.

Innovative design for improved efficiency

Watch out for these icy innovations so you can chill out in a chilled out room

Moore’s Law states that

technological advancements

are improving at an everincreasing

rate, and the

furtherance of our daily tools

and gadgets will be an

undying trend until the far

future. Time after time, we

create newer machines one

would never have thought they

needed, and improve upon the

countless existing devices to

lessen the hassles of daily life.

“Working smarter, not harder”,

therefore, is at the very

essence of innovating.

Most machines fall under two

categories—the browraising,

questionable types

life-altering devices that have

quite literally been the societal

standard. Cars, radios,

television, phones, and a

myriad of historic tools and

gadgets.

One of the most revolutionary

machines to have even been

manufactured is the airconditioner.

With it, one can

defy the ambiguity of weather

with a breeze of constantly

cold, conditioned air. This

invention revolutionized

everything, from textile

factories, to cinemas, and

even the home. With the introduction

of the air-conditioner,

human expectations about

indoor comfort was reset. Like

weather wizards, we can now

expect to have the best

climate, even in the comfort of

our own homes.

Yet technology continues to

advance.

If we stopped tinkering with

and bettering machines

simply because they have

done their task and our

comfort was achieved, we

would be leagues behind

where we are currently.

Air-conditioners and cooling

systems are not exempt from

the curious, perfectionist

That said, here are six ways

the air-conditioning systems

we use every day have

improved over the years,

making us love them even

more.

How HVAC System Significant to

Healthcare Establishments

HVAC systems in

hospitals are a

primary line of

defense against the

spread of airborne diseases.

HVAC systems play a

tremendous role in keeping

hospitals clean and running

smoothly, so imagine how it

would feel to wake up inside a

hospital without HVAC

systems. HVAC keep up with

the ever-increasing demand

that is placed on it in an

ever-changing hospital

environment. For people with

asthma and other allergy

problems, central air with its

ability to filter and condition

environmental air can have a

powerful health benefits. Any

person who has been involved

in health care for long enough,

would have come across the

industry mantra that good

nursing care can be provided

under a tree.

It is after all instinctive that

good clean fresh air has a

significant positive effect on

patient clinical outcomes. The

need for providing health care

inside a building inevitably

detracts from providing the

best environment has to offer.

Unfortunately, it is impossible

to provide modern health

care outside a hospital that is

equipped with medical

equipment and services.

142

H V A C R

Interventions between

Healthcare and HVAC Systems

Health care HVAC will always

be based on a set of

compromises. As a rule of

thumb, if local temperatures

rarely rise above the normal

degrees Fahrenheit, hospitals

probably do not need central

air-conditioning.

On the other hand, central air

is often regarded by realtors

as a valuable selling point.

The classic compromise

between fresh air and energy

consumption is not unique to

health care due to the invasive

nature of some procedures

and patients often being

immune compromised.

Differential pressures and the

need to control odors add

extra layers of complexity.

Additional to this,

often-complex building

layouts, high service density

and the need to fit all of this

into an efficient building

envelope. Developers of fit

and proper HVAC system for

a hospital have daunting task

of making all of this work. No

wonder that gluts of

technologies are typically used

to derive a solution. HVAC

design trends historically have

been different between public

and private health care.

Patients’

The patient expectation

from a public health care

service is that of

efficiency and a positive

clinical outcome. Private

health care patients have

the same expectation, but

the service is burdened

with an additional

expectation of good

nursing care in an

aesthetically pleasing and

comfortable environment.

This is understandable as

private patients pay a

significant premium for

this additional service.

In non-specialist areas,

the trend in public health

care is for natural

ventilation. In other places

that have a moderate

climate, ventilation systems

with a degree of air

tempering can be considered.

In recent years,

these places incorporated

innovative ideas such as

geothermal tempering of

air and thermal mass, as

well as re-introducing the

age-old concepts of large

overhangs and creating

airflow through the use of

dampers and chimney

effects. In private

hospitals, the preferred

methodology is still unitary

air conditioning systems.

are managed in a

controlled, predictable way.

One industry study found that

half of all service calls were

the result of improper or

insufficient maintenance of

of them have proven to be a

that reflected the world we are

living in today — highly

modernized and

technology-driven.

Those note-worthy trends are

starting to be used to solve

problems that had long been

present in the industry. Among

these trends and technological

breakthroughs are these six

innovations that are now

remodeling the way we

construct our buildings for the

better.

156

Lighting and HVAC Integration

It may sound a bit puzzling

how the building industry

tends to separate the HVAC

controls from that of the

lighting when in fact, there is

simply no solid proof nor

technical and customer

satisfaction at such installation

procedure. Although they are

both connected to the central

building management system,

it has proved to provide lesser

energy savings and energy

efficiency.

With the rise of polyvalent

and intelligent controllers, this

problem has finally become

a thing of the past. Managing

lighting and HVAC

simultaneously led to

lower costs both for hardware

and installation. This is also

a competing factor for hotels

and residential areas where

customers tend to choose the

technology-driven path instead

of the traditional HVAC and

lighting separation.

158

H V A C R

L E A D E R S

Networking Everything

While “smart cities” and “IoT”

may sound related to building

automation, they are, in fact,

separate blocks of a larger

whole. Building automation

was once perceived to

function separately from the

rest of the systems such as fire

alarms, elevators, and access

controls. Each of these

systems has its own

interfaces, disconnected from

the rest of the controls and

merely functioning on their

own.

Thankfully, integration has

solved this problem.

Automation is now being

connected into a single

network with the rest of the

systems where everything

functions as a whole and is

controlled by the mastermind

existing in the cloud. From

integrating the different

systems within the building,

we can then move forward to

integrating structures within a

vicinity, finally forming smart

cities.

159

160

Wireless

Functionality

The wireless age has long

been the solution for

everything that wires seem to

complicate. Using this

capability in the building

automation industry will

significantly reduce installation

and modification costs and will

make the system more

manageable and flexible even

from outside of the local

network.

Remote operations will boom,

and considerable savings will

be returned to the owner in no

time. In addition to that, the

world is already taking

advantage of this technology,

and it seems logical enough

to adopt this technology to

building automation. There

are plenty of technical support

and innovations in the wireless

industry that is surfacing

nowadays, so integrating them

into our buildings would be as

easy as pie.

Application

Development

While technologies are

starting to penetrate the

industry of building

automation, there arises the

problem of managing the big

chunks of data that comes

from the system. To transform

this data into useful

information that can be used

to provide more quality service

to customers, application

development should be one of

the top trends that need to be

161

lighting and

HVAC

costs both for

hardware and

implemented.

Building automation needs

well-developed apps to filter

the data and turn them into

value-added assets. Without

these apps, the generated

data collected in their

databases prove to be more of

junk than value.

Openness

Some companies may be

skeptical when it comes to

making code sources and

data open to the public, but

more prominent companies are

starting to explore the world of

open source. When codes are

open, it provides IT experts to

better the system and eventually

improve its overall performance.

Open source platforms

have long proven to be more of

a benefit than an actual threat.

User Experience

Customers nowadays are

getting more accustomed to

using high-end technology that

offers not only excellent

functionality but also friendly

user interfaces. This factor

should be no exception when

designing the building.

Usability should be among

the top priorities of building

automation, mainly because

customers are the life of the

industry, and serving them

better is the end goal of every

business.

164

This may sound more

demanding on the part of the

customer, but this actually

sparks the idea of creating

more efficient systems in the

near future.

Global warming and climate

change have a negative

impact on the environment

resulting in more dangerous

catastrophes like big floods,

super typhoons, and many

others. It is also sad to think

that some parts the world are

slowly disappearing due to

rising sea levels.

The greenhouse effect is

another thing that concerns

pro-environment organizations.

As people burn more coal,

oil, natural gas, and others,

greenhouse gasses become

thicker and denser. The result?

Heat is trapped, and the Earth

becomes warm. Aside from

that, spray cans that released

chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)

may damage the ozone layer.

All these leads to global

warming. Because of that,

different industries are working

together to minimize the

harmful effects of global

warming.

The Heating Ventilation Air

Conditioning and Refrigeration

(HVACR) industry are trying to

find ways to facilitate the safe

use of refrigerants. Studies

are conducted to find

climate-friendly alternatives

and identify solutions for

improving the quality of indoor

air. This way, people and the

environment is free from

harmful chemicals.

169

B E S T S T O R I E S O F 2 0 1 9

HVACR industry leaders and

associations like the American

Society of Heating,

Refrigerating, and Air-

Conditioning Engineers

(ASHRAE) believe that with a

strong partnership, they would

foster collaboration and

provide guidance.

“Alongside the Air-

Conditioning, Heating, and

Refrigeration Institute (AHRI)

and the US Department of

Energy (DOE), we have

collaborated to fund vital

research to expedite findings

and establish a more robust

fact base about the

properties and the use of

flammable refrigerants,”

ASHRAE’s President Bjarne

W. Olesen said.

He added that the $5.2mn

investment would help

accelerate studies on the

safe use of refrigerants. The

technical knowledge gained

from studies could also help

determine any additional

climate-friendly alternatives.

One of the results of their

studies is the creation of

guidelines for zero energy

buildings.

Strategies for HVAC Green

Technology and Sustainability

The HVACR industry employs

Green Technology, which

involves utilizing methods and

materials for developing more

environment-friendly

techniques. It aims to find

better strategies compared to

the ones previously used by

the industry. Older practices

are not only harmful to the

environment, but they are also

more expensive. To achieve

sustainability, these strategies

should be implemented:

1. Sustainability. This refers

to the ability to exist continually

by conserving natural

resources. More research and

development is needed to help

manufacturers that are

struggling to make equipment

more efficient. The Department

of Energy and other HVAC

industrial manufacturers

supplement this research. For

instance, ALCOA, a large

producer of aluminum made

from recycled raw materials,

sponsored a study to

determine ways on how to

develop better heat exchang-

171

172

ers using aluminum materials.

This step helps improve HVAC

and contribute to the

sustainability of Green

Technology.

2. Source Reduction. For

this strategy, waste and

pollution are reduced by using

new methods of energy

consumption and production.

The conservation of energy

through changing old methods

helps the environment. The

development of smart HVAC

systems can help with Source

Reduction by making

equipment more precise.

Controls are designed for this

equipment so it can be

customized depending on the

amount of energy needed.

3. Innovation. The HVACR

industry should also focus on

the development of new

innovations and

technologies to decrease the

use of harmful chemicals and

fossil fuels. Fortunately, the

sector is consistently working

on new innovations and are

taking steps to help the

environment. An excellent

example of that is the recent

change in the use of CFC

refrigerants and the planned

elimination of HCFC

refrigerants, replacing it with

HFC. Technological

advancement also made it

possible to control HVAC and

lighting systems, which helps

to reduce energy

consumption.

173

174

Driverless

vehicles can be

controlled

remotely, which

lessens the risks

of human

construction

workers since

they can work

from a distance.

175

B E S T S T O R I E S O F 2 0 1 9

4. Viability. When Green

Technology is economically

feasible, more jobs can be

created for people who are

also advocates in helping the

environment. HVAC

technicians, people who are

involved in research and

development, and individuals

who are capable of inspecting

and commissioning new

buildings can help improve the

industry.

5. Cradle to Cradle Design.

Another important strategy is

designing products that can

be recycled into new products

or be fully reclaimed at the end

of its lifestyle. In the HVACR

industry, everything used in its

equipment can be recycled

like used refrigerants. Some

components used in air

conditioning and heating

equipment also have high

recycle value like the coils of

condensers and evaporators.

Once the HVAC industry

implements the strategies

mentioned above, they will no

doubt protect the people and

the environment. Since the

leaders of the sector are

working together to achieve

this, we can hope for a future

with sustainable HVACR.

worked its way through the

primary industries, and the

Heating Ventilation, Air

Conditioning, and

Refrigeration (HVACR) industry

is no exception. This

transformation has shifted the

once simple system into a

more complex but more

efficient scheme.

Integrating automation

systems into the industrial and

commercial HVACR creates an

intelligent machine that helps

the admin in various ways,

mostly in managing security

and temperature and

prolonging equipment life.

Here are five of the top

benefits of installing a Building

Automation System (BAS) in

your HVACR systems.

Produces Goal-oriented systems

Incorporating BAS to your

old-school HVACRs can turn

your systems from simple

machines that are only

capable of getting the job

done to intelligent systems that

improve the overall

performance of the building.

This integration proves to

achieve both operational and

process goals.

This also meant less time on

addressing customer

complaints on the old-school

system and more time

improving the current system.

On top of that, the number

one goal of HVACR is to

produce healthier air quality

for its customers and

employees and eventually

reduce sick days and increase

productivity.

Better data handling capabilities

According to data scientists,

all businesses, no matter

how small, produce massive

amounts of data every day.

There are tons of insights

hidden in this data if only it

can be analyzed and

presented in a useful way.

Thankfully, gone are the days

when data processing needs

large bulky computer centers.

Building Automation Systems

alone can do the trick. With

intelligence incorporated to the

sensors, BAS can collect and

filter useful data from the flow

sensors, thermostats, and air

handling units and eventually

provide correct and accurate

feedback in real-time. Not only

will it offer precise feedback,

but it will also adjust the

system according to the

feedback and the

requirements of the building.

Better Control

using IoT

The Internet of Things, or more

popularly coined as IoT, is not

at all new to the automation

industry. This technology is

actually revolutionizing the

concept of energy

management, making facility

operations more flexible and

installation more

straightforward.

Combining BAS with IoTdevices

creates a new world

of system control. The devices

transfer relevant data to the

building management server,

which, in turn, are used by the

system to produce accurate

results and adjustments.

Using graphical interfaces

also adds to the efficiency of

the system. Workers are no

longer required to climb roofs

to access unreachable

devices. All the details of the

devices connected to the

server can be seen through

the interface. Controlling these

units will also be a piece of

cake as it can be as simple as

pushing a couple of buttons.

This will then lead to better

comfort for the workers and

consistent temperatures inside

the building, which will

eventually lead to lower overall

costs for the organization.

vision is both

inspiring and

Better Energy

and Resource

Management

With the intelligent systems of

BAS, an organization can

implement better energy

usage strategies to use its

sources efficiently and

effectively. The data collected

by the system can be used to

guide the administration in

addressing consumption

issues.

To top it off, using an

automation system can help

reduce your utility bills by

15%, saving about $0.20 to

$0.40 per square foot. This

increase in savings can even

out the initial cost of installing

an automation system and

afterward, can be allocated to

HVACR repairs and

maintenance.

Utilizing Wireless Networking

Wireless networking is already

becoming a trend in the

industry. This reduces the

hassle of installing meters of

wires around the building.

Wireless networking makes

it easier to connect a new

system to an old network as

new work plans are no longer

needed.

The wireless technology is

typically used in the security

systems where cameras are

treated as independent units,

and no longer requires

protected wirings. They can

simply be connected to an

access point and controlled

through the internet.

In addition to that, it may not

be evident at first, but having

automated systems is

considered as a tangible

asset. This can be a major

make or break feature when

you decide to sell your

property. Because both

commercial and industrial

property is based on its net

operating income, the lower

the HVAC costs, the higher the

income and the better

chances of selling the property

at a higher price.

Dealing with Heating,

Ventilation, Air Conditioning,

and Refrigeration (HVACR)

systems is always paired with

dealing with data security,

especially if your system is

automated. The HVACR

industry has slowly geared

towards the use of smart

HVACR devices, which can

basically connect to the cloud

and allow users to control the

gadgets remotely with any

smartphone application or

web browser. It has grown to a

staggering rate of 8.22%, and

by 2020, we can see more of

these wireless thermostats and

remotely accessible HVACR

gadgets anywhere in

the market.

Although it is a good indication

of the advancement in

technology, it also holds a

weak point. Today, large

facilities and retailers often

hire third-party HVACR

companies to install and

monitor their building

temperature and energy

usage. This practice sure

reduces operational costs

but also proves to be highly

insecure. Since the HVACR

devices are connected to the

internet and monitored via the

network, these devices can

easily be hacked into, making

it typically vulnerable to

cyber-attacks.

193

In 2005 alone, 67% of no less

than 7,800 businesses

had detected at least one

cybercrime against them. And

among those who detected

such abnormality, 86%

identified more than a single

attack on them. This led to at

least 68% of the victims

sustaining monetary losses

of no less than $10,000.

In 2013, Target, one of the

major retailers in the United

States, suffered a severe case

of a data security breach,

which upon inspection, was

because of stolen login credentials

from the company’s

third-party HVACR vendor. The

breach then affected millions

of customers, with about 40

million credit and debit card

numbers were taken. The

company suffered a loss of

no less than $400 million.

This is the main reason why

it is imperative that HVAC

contractors are working on

measures to ensure the

security of their internal

systems and make sure they

are ready for any possible

cyber-attacks. For retailers and

building owners, below are

some of the steps to secure

your HVACR systems.

194

Steps in Securing Your HVAC System

Develop an HVACR

security plan

To develop an HVACR security

plan is to ensure the security

of your network, most

especially if a third-party

contractor is involved. The

security plan should include

restricting access to your

building automation system

during the installation,

programming, updating,

maintenance, and repairing of

the system. Consider creating

an internal support staff that

will be trained by the

third-party contractor so that

no outsiders can have control

over your system.

Limit physical access

Limiting your physical access

to the HVACR equipment is

also an intuitive way of

securing your facility. Restrict

access to the areas which

require human workers.

Consider creating rules on escorts

to mechanical rooms and

HVACR equipment rooms. It

may also come in handy if you

use HVACR security cages to

fully restrict physical access to

anyone in the vicinity.

Properly secure access

to data

Ensure that your payment

data, employee data, and

other sensitive information are

tucked away from the HVACR

network. If you’re using wire-

less HVACR devices, restrict

your vendor’s access to the

system first and ensure that

all the classified data are put

away in a secure place. If

using the network is inevitable,

plan to create user accounts

with granting privileges so that

unauthorized personnel will

have access to your

information. This way, you

can also monitor account

activities and report

abnormalities if ever.

Screen people

Ask about the workers who

would be installing and

accessing your HVACR

systems. Ensure where they

came from and to what extent

their job is. Inquire if the

vendor has independent

contractors who would be

coming in for specific

services. The fewer people

and parties involved, the

better is the security.

Ask vendors about HVAC

security practices

Although some HVACR

companies are not new to the

business, most of them are still

unaware of the security risks

their devices impose on the

client. This is the exact reason

why being vigilant is

imperative. Gather information

on the company’s policies on

keeping your data safe. Also,

ask how they monitor their

employees to be sure they

are following the standard

operating procedures. It is

also a must to review your

current practices, as well as

the vendor’s. This way, you

can ensure that you will not

have any problems with a

data breach.
