° Manuscript Cookery Book of Lady Anne 

Blencowe, (3)pp. index and 34 (ex36)pp. of cookery 

‘receipts’ (apparently in her hand); contemp. blind-panelled 

vellum, med.8vo., and boldy written ‘A Blencowe’ within 

flourishes in central panel of lower cover. (late 17th / early 

18th cents.). Anne Blencowe (1656-1718), eldest daughter 

of the eminent Savillian professor at Oxford, John Wallis, had 

married Sir John Blencowe (politician and lawyer, of Marston St. 

Lawrence, Northants) in 1675. In the earlier 20th cent. another 

of her receipt books came to light, being published in a limited 

edition (1925) with an introduction by George Saintsbury. The 

receipts here, generally favouring fruits, puddings and cakes 

over fish and meat - as did, apparently, the 1694 dated volume 

- include bisketts, gingerbread, egg cheesecakes, damson or 

bulace chese, gooseberry vinegar etc.; a few are credited - 

Lady Probyn’s custard pancakes, Mrs Steptoes orange cream, 

Mrs Barnardistons sago pudding ... It is tempting to suggest 

that this might be a precursor of the published book, though 

a connection with a kinswoman, Lady Elizabeth Probyn (5 

credits) may point to a later date.

Being a Ghost Story of Christmas, 1st edition, 

1st issue, Chapman & Hall, 1843 half-title printed in 

blue, title-page printed in red and blue, verso printed in blue, 

2-page publisher’s advertisement at end, hand-coloured etched 

frontispiece and 3 plates by John Leech, 4 wood-engravings 

in the text by W.J. Linton after Leech, light green endpapers, 

all edges gilt, original reddish-brown fine-ribbed cloth with 

decorative blind border surrounding central gilt cartouche 

and lettering on upper cover, spine lettered and decorated in 

gilt, 8vo (163 x 102mm), Eckel, p. 110; Smith II:4. First edition, 

first issue with ‘Stave I’ as the first chapter heading and no 

text changes. The binding conforms to William B. Todd’s first 

impression, first issue with the closest interval between blindstamping 

left margin and left extremity of wreath 14-15mm, 

and ‘D’ of ‘Dickens’ within wreath on front cover in perfect 

condition. (The Book Collector, Winter 1961, pp. 449-454.) A 

Christmas Carol was published on 19 December 1843, selling 

6,000 copies in the few days before Christmas. Despite its 

enormous success it was a financial disaster for Dickens. It 

was a separate commission requested by him of his publishers 

Chapman and Hall, with Dickens insisting on a fine coloured 

binding and endpapers with gilt lettering. Although it went 

into seven editions by May 1844 almost all the profits were 

absorbed in the expenses of binding, special papers, coloured 

plates and advertising, and Dickens found himself overdrawn 

on his Coutts account, and had to ask his friend Mitton for 

another loan, together with - Dickens, Charles - The Battle 

of Life, 1st edition, wood-engraved frontispiece, additional 

pictorial title and illustrations by Daniel Maclise, Richard 

Doyle, Clarkson Stansfield and John Leech, publisher’s deep 

red horizontally-ribbed cloth decorated in blind, upper cover

° Lionel Jeffries (1926-2010) - Screenplay, 1st 

draft, as screenwriter and director of ‘’The 

Railway Children, of his adaptation from the 

original novel by E. Nesbit, dated June, 1968, 

annotated and corrected by Jeffries in black 

ink and pencil, 139 numbered pages, folio, (33 

x 20cms), within a black sprung-hinged binder, the inner 

board with the director’s bold signature in felt pen, with an 

inserted pictorial title page, depicting a sketch of ‘’Bobbie’’, 

the inner back board with a sketch of ‘’Peter’’, both by Jeffries 

and a handwritten note suggesting an early idea of music 

by Jake Thackray. Together with a partially filled scrapbook 

of newspaper cuttings relating to the film, a programme for 

the Royal Charity Matinee, at the ABC cinema Shaftesbury 

Avenue, on 22nd December, 1970, his personal white label 

‘’for approval’’ copies of The Railway Children studio 2 LP set, 

with narration by Jeffries, dated 30th November, 1970 and two 

EMI The Railway Children LP’S., Together with - The Railway 

Children, 1970 - Thirty seven black and white images, most 

previously unpublished, showing members of the cast between 

takes, consisting of twenty-eight images 38 x 20cms; seven 

images 28 x 35cms. and two images 21 x 25cms; The images 

principally taken by Ronnie Pilgrim (1913-2003), (official stills 

cameraman) with others by Brian Duff (1929-2007) etc., The 

images principally depict Jenny Agutter, Gary Warren, Sally 

Thompsett and Lionel Jeffries.

Hitchcock (1899-1980) - a two page manuscript telegram, from 

Los Angeles, dated 12th March, 1971, ‘’Dear Jeff, You have not 

half made a mess of my private projection room at the studio 

stop. After seeing your delightful and charming film [‘’The 

Railway Children”] I have to call in the studio fire brigade to 

pump the water out because I had with me a very lachrymose 

pair in Alma and Pat [Hitchcock’s wife and daughter] stop. 

Congratulations on your water dividing [sic] power. Hitch’’ 

Fred Astaire (1899-1987) - a telegram, from Beverly Hills, 

undated, circa 1970, to Mr and Mrs Lionel Jeffries, Little 

Prestwick, St. Huberts Lane, Gerrard Cross, Bucks, ‘’Loved 

Railway Children. Congratulations. Christmas greetings all 

family, Fred Astaire’’; a 2 page autograph letter, from Beverly 

Hills, dated 25th March, 1972, explaining why he turned down 

the offer to play Mr. Blunden, in The Amazing Mr. Blunden, 

signed, ‘’As ever - Fred’’. Together with original air mail 

envelope. And a postcard, ‘’Dear Friend, Sorry missed you. We 

never heard a word after receiving your telegram. Am leaving 

this weekend, but Ava is going on to London & will give you a 

ring. All best, Fred’’ 

Sir Richard Attenborough (1923-2014) - Two typescript 

letters, from Old Friars, Richmond Green, Surrey, dated 

21st July, 1972, thanking Jeffries for sending a telegram in 

support of Attenborough’s production, as director, of ‘’The 

Young Winston’’ and a further typescript letter, from the 

same address, dated 18th June, 1993, thanking Jeffries for his 

congratulations upon receiving the title Baron Attenborough. 

Leslie Caron Hall (1931-) Two autograph letters, both from 

Flat 8, 24, Hyde Park, London, one dated 22nd April [1957] 

acknowledging the congratulations on the birth of her son, 

Christopher Hall. The other, a note offering sympathy for an 

accident suffered by Jeffries, [During location filming for a 

1983 episode of Tom, Dick and Harriet, a stunt involving a car 

and a lake went very badly wrong, ending up with Jeffries only 

just managing to get out of the car’s front window before the 

vehicle sank in 45 feet (14 m) of water] 

Bryan Forbes (1926-2013) - a 2 page typescript letter, from 

Seven Pines, Wentworth, Surrey, dated 26th November, 1972, 

congratulating Jeffries for his directorship of the film ‘’The 

Amazing Mr. Blunden, and 2 page manuscript letter, dated 20th 

October, 1981, relating to their mutual collaboration for the 

film, directed by Forbes - ‘’Better Late Than Never’’. 

Diana Dors (1931-1984) - a 2 page manuscript letter, on 

Yorkshire TV letterhead, dated 18th July, 1972, thanking Jeffries 

for offering her the role as Mrs. Wickens, in ‘’The Amazing Mr. 

Blunden’’, together with a receipt relating to a Mink coat, which 

was sold to Lionel’s wife, Eileen. 

Lord Cecil Douglas (1898-1981) [Lord Cecil Douglas was the 

grandson of Oscar Wilde’s lover Lord Alfred Douglas] - a 2 

page typescript letter, from 3, Chesham Street, London, dated 

12th April, 1960, addressed to ‘’Lionel Jeffries Esq., posing as 

John Sholto, Marquis of Queensbury (Anti-Sodomite)’’ - a 

satirical piece concerning Oscar Wilde. (Lionel Jeffries played 

Lord Queensbury in ‘’The Trials of Oscar Wilde’’), together 

with a rare historic framed photograph (annotated by Jeffries) 

of the opening night party of the Golden Globe and British 

Academy Award (now BAFTA) winning film - The Trials of 

Oscar Wilde, with the film’s director Ken Hughes, producer 

Irving Allen, actors John Frazer, Peter Finch and Lionel Jeffries - 

joined by Lord David Douglas, Lord Cecil Douglas and Vyvyan 

Holland (Oscar Wilde’s son), (14).

This gui would have been part of an altar set used in state rituals held in the first lunar 

month of the year, during which the emperor made offerings to heaven at the Altar 

for Bountiful Harvest (Qigutan), part of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and would 

have comprised also a pair of dou, fu and xing-shaped vessels. Similarly composed sets 

with archaistic designs would have been made in claire de lune, yellow and red glazes 

for ritual use in the Altars of the Moon, Earth and Sun, respectively. For a related set 

of the Qianlong period but in clair-de-lune glaze from the Palace Museum, Beijing, see 

E.S. Rawski and J. Rawson, eds., China: The Three Emperors 1662-1795, London, 2005, 

pp.125 and 396-397, pls.34-37, where it is noted that the archaistic shape of these 

sets was not designed until 1748, when the Qianlong emperor ordered the Grand 

Secretaries to consult classical texts when designing objects, and insisted that he 

approve their designs before manufacturing could begin. The objects were illustrated 

and described in The Illustrated Regulations for Ceremonial Paraphernalia of the 

Qing Dynasty (Huangchao liqi tushi). Compare an identical vessel with cover in the

Cressida Campbell was born in Sydney, Australia in 1960, and has since become one of the country’s most successful artists.

An unusual early Victorian silver rectangular snuff 

box, commemorating Grace Darling, engraved with a 

panel depicting the heroine in a lifeboat rescuing sailors from 

a sinking ship, within deeply chased scrolling foliate borders, 

the base with engine turned decoration, maker, Nathaniel 

Mills, Birmingham, 1838, 67mm, 85 grams, sold with a copy of 

‘Grace Darling; or, The Heroine of The Fern Islands’ by G.W.M. 

Reynolds, London 1839.

Grace Darling, who as a young lady of just 23 years old 

assisted her father in saving the lives of nine people during 

the wreck of the S.S. Forfarshire on Big Harcar Rock, close 

to the Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland on 7 

September 1838. Rowing out together in a simple coble boat, 

the pair fought through the roughest seas, assisting numerous 

stricken passengers, and returning them to safety at Longstone. 

Such was her fame at the time, Queen Victoria herself, still 

then a young lady, sent Grace Darling a personal gift of £50 

in admiration of her heroic conduct at sea, and The Times 

newspaper of 19 September 1838, made the statement that 

her actions formed an instance of heroism on the part of a 

female unequalled perhaps, and certainly not surpassed, by any 

on record.

Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George, 

GCMG., Knight Grand Cross set of insignia, collar 

chain, of early 20th Century manufacture, silvergilt 

and enamel, the links alternatively composed 

of winged lions royally crowned, Maltese crosses 

enamelled in white, and the cyphers SM and SG, 

having in the centre of the collar an imperial 

crown over two uncrowned winged lions of St 

Mark, passant gardant, each holding in his fore paw 

a book and seven arrows, with two similar lions, 

but un-crowned, at the opposite end of the chain,

Sash badge, a silver-gilt seven pointed star with V 

shaped extremities, enamelled white and edged
