The surveys aim to map out the battle which took place between the islanders and the Danes,
shortly before the battle outside Visby Town Wall on the 27th of July 1361. The surveys have
resulted in the discovery of some fifty objects that can be related to the battle. The finds consist of
complete or fragmentary weapons and fragments of armour. The weapons comprise long knives,
crossbow bolts, iron spikes from morningstars, and a spearhead. The armour finds comprise
armour plates, similar to those found at the massgraves at Korsbetningen, Visby, buckles, an
armour mount and chain-mail rings.
The locations of the finds stretch from the central to the northern part of the investigation area, a
distance of one kilometre, and show the result of the uneven battle between an estimated 1500-
2000 Danish/German professional soldiers on the one side, and about 500-1500 islanders, most of
whom were unaccustomed to battle, on the other. The fact that crossbow bolts have been located in
or just on the shore of the medieval lake Fjäle myr, relatively close to the narrowest part of the
lake, lends support to the theory of a Danish envelopment operation and a lake crossing in the
southern part of the investigation area - a Danish change of strategy on meeting with opposition at
the bridge of Ajmunds. Having won an overwhelming victory, the road to Visby was thereafter
open for the Danish king Valdemar Atterdag and his army.
The field surveys will continue during the year 2008. Our aim is to recreate the battle events, and
thereby emphasize the importance of both the battlefield and the events in the countryside as a
source of knowledge about the Danish invasion of Gotland in the year 1361.
Zusammenfassung
Die Projektgruppe Mästerby 1361 hat in den Jahren 2006 und 2007 drei
schlachtfeldarchäologische Untersuchungen in Mästerby auf Gotland, durchgeführt. Ziel der
Untersuchungen ist jene Schlacht zu rekonstruieren, welche zwischen gotländischen Bauern und
dänischen/deutschen Soldaten am kleinen See Fjäle myr wenige Tage vor den Streitigkeiten vom
27. Juli 1361 an Visbys Ringmauer stattgefunden hat.
Die etwa 50 bisher gemachten Einzelfunde bestehen aus komplett oder teilweiser erhaltenen
Waffen und Projektilen sowie Rüstungsteilen: Bolzen, Nägel von Morgensternen,
Rüstungslamellen, Schnallen und Beschläge und vier Rügger-Dolche, wovon einer vollständig
erhalten. Die Fundstücke stammen aus dem zentralen und nördlichen Bereich des
Untersuchungsgebietes, welches sich über einen Kilometer erstreckt. Sie weisen auf einen
ungleichen Kampf zwischen den etwa 1500-2000 dänischen und deutschen professionellen
Soldaten und den ungefähr 500-1500, meist untrainierten Bauern.
Daß sich die Mehrzahl der gefundenen Bolzen auf den schmalsten Teil des Fjäle myr Sees
konzentrieren, spricht möglicherweise für eine dänische Umfassung der gotländischen Truppen
und dem anschließenden Übergang über den See, welcher in diesem Sommer vermutlich relativ
trocken war. Nach einem überlegenen Sieg der dänischen Truppen war den Weg nach Visby für
den dänischen König Valdemar Atterdag und sein Heer geebnet.
Die Felduntersuchungen des Projekts werden im Jahr 2008 fortgesetzt werden, mit dem Ziel den
Verlauf der Schlacht von Mästerby anhand von Funden zu rekonstruieren und dadurch das
Schlachtfeld und die Ereignisse in den ländlichen Gebieten Gotlands als Wissensquelle zur
dänischen Invasion des Jahres 1361 hervorzuheben.
