umeå is a fantastic town, not least<br />
as regards food. the winter half of<br />
the year is both inspiring and challenging.<br />
it brings autumn’s brimming<br />
larder of forest berries, mushrooms<br />
and game to partner excellent<br />
fish from our rivers and lakes<br />
and succulent lamb, pork and beef<br />
from natural pastures. growing autumnal<br />
darkness and increasing chill<br />
sharpen our senses. they give our<br />
lives a greater inner sense of togetherness<br />
and inspire creativity in<br />
the kitchen. Any gloom lifts and<br />
optimism rises once the first snow<br />
has fallen. Perhaps it is because of<br />
this, and a few other umeå speciali-<br />
ties, that the city is now so blessed<br />
with a number of truly fine restaurants<br />
and a handful that are world<br />
class. this is just a quick selection<br />
of what umeå has to offer in the<br />
way of restaurants. rest assured<br />
that you can eat anywhere in the<br />
city and be sure of something good!<br />
REX<br />
rex is a true party palace and conference<br />
centre. nonetheless, excellent<br />
cooking is the hub. sweden’s<br />
White guide has voted it norrland’s<br />
best bar, highlighting its great<br />
expertise on the wine side. it does<br />
indeed offer the city’s widest selection<br />
of wines served by the glass.<br />
the kitchen is keen to use only local<br />
produce and the menus follow the<br />
seasons closely. its lunches are very<br />
popular and frequently attract<br />
crowds of eager diners.<br />
VIKTORIA<br />
in the “blue building”, another of<br />
umeå’s oldest, there is the city’s<br />
foremost restaurant, viktoria. in its<br />
european capital of culture year<br />
(2014), umeå will be proudly showing<br />
off the sámi influence on the<br />
city’s history. this influence will<br />
even be visible in our food culture.<br />
For one year now, viktoria has been<br />
following the 8 sámi seasons and<br />
changing menus accordingly. Head<br />
chef Andreas and his colleagues<br />
travel the county’s farms selecting<br />
the best seasonal ingredients while,<br />
in the restaurant, Cissi and Pelle<br />
ensure a perfectly matching choice<br />
of drinks. Here, you can have a bite<br />
to eat or simply enjoy a drink. in<br />
common with other restaurants,<br />
lunch is served 5 days a week.<br />
LE GARAGE<br />
Le garage is an extremely popular<br />
local bistro with a clear French signature.<br />
even if many of the raw ingredients<br />
are local, the francophile<br />
influences in the kitchen are evident.<br />
they are brought even further<br />
to the attention by the appetising<br />
wine list. Peter and Jakob, who run<br />
the place, worked for some time at<br />
the old viktor (a world-class eatery)<br />
and together developed the restaurant<br />
at Hotell Borgafjäll into Lappland’s<br />
finest. naturally enough,<br />
sweden’s White guide has discovered<br />
this pearl and is recommending<br />
people to take the little trip out<br />
from the centre to enjoy a true<br />
gourmet experience.<br />
Rex Bar & Grill, Umeå<br />
INVITO<br />
glorious norrland ingredients meet<br />
italian cuisine, a mix that has<br />
proved enormously popular with<br />
umeå’s residents and visitors alike.<br />
Here, prime local wares come together<br />
with mediterranean tastes<br />
to make lovely music! the care that<br />
goes into the cooking is matched by<br />
that devoted to the drinks menu. A<br />
combination that guarantees you<br />
will leave invito with a satisfied<br />
smile on your lips.<br />
TC<br />
in Folkets Hus, in the centre of the<br />
city, there is tC, umeå’s only ecolabelled<br />
restaurant and only one of<br />
37 in the country. Without compromising<br />
quality, ingredients are<br />
bought as locally as possible. Popular,<br />
modern, natural and near are<br />
tC’s key words. Here, raw materials<br />
are handled lovingly and no shortcuts<br />
are taken in producing fine<br />
meals. Besides a theatre and conference<br />
facilities, the building also<br />
houses (in the basement) the Äpplet<br />
restaurant. this has won great<br />
acclaim for its conference food. the<br />
basic concept runs throughout the<br />
entire establishment.<br />
