In 1986, Sune Jonsson looked back upon his work:
In connection with an exhibition at Moderna Museet in 1962 I summarized
my intentions. I felt then that I write and take photographs in
order to “tell, enrich and preserve”. The more simple, the more uncomplicated;
three words. They still hold good today, and they probably will
not lose their significance.
Years have passed like telephone poles along the roadside. But the
pictorial work has frozen the time that sweeps past, transformed it into
a large number of areas in which we continue our lives. We can observe
them, become absorbed in them, relive those things that we have long
since passed by. At best these areas may also mediate knowledge and
unite people, from the past, the present and the future, as well as increase
understanding and agreement. At least that was my intention.
the museum of Västerbotten wants to create a Centre of Documentary
photography, in Sune Jonsson’s name, based on his archives which
are also of great national interest. Sune Jonsson’s classic and much beloved
photos will be exhibited here alongside lesser known motifs. Documentary
photography by other photographers will also be presented
here. New expressions, new perspectives and a renewal of documentary
photography will be an important feature on the foundation of tradition
and historical perspective.
apart from exhibitions and films, important cornerstones of the centre
will be reading rooms with magazines and photo literature, regular seminars,
photographers-in-residence, workshops and courses where the
concept of documentary photography will be problematized, interpreted
and given new meanings in an ongoing discussion.
Sune Jonsson’s Centre of Documentary photography will be a unifying
force in the country with its national and international network that will
cooperate on issues regarding the importance of documentary photography
in society.
