Competition often leads to lower prices being introduced in the market. The effect is not only that new operators take shares from old ones but also that car-drivers switch to public transport and that new journeys are generated as low-income groups can afford to travel more. Since 75% of longdistance journeys are made by car, there is a substantial potential market here. The effect of deregulation of bus traffic was that SJ lowered its prices on some routes and studies have shown that many people who had previously taken their cars began to use the train on some routes. Tougher competition from the airlines was a contributing factor to SJ’s adoption of a flexible fare system in exactly the same way as the airlines with very low fares for journeys booked early. As these are applied generally, competition has increased not only with air travel but also with car and bus. This may have contributed to the supply of long-distance bus traffic now having decreased and that the bus companies have in their turn begun to introduce flexible pricing.
