(YENÝ AKREP) SAYFA-PAGE:27YIL-YEAR:9 (OCAK - JANUARY 2011) SAYI-ISSUE:<strong>96</strong>"STEP IN LINE WITH EUROPE!" CARTOON ALBUMESTEP IN LINE WITH EUROPE!A cartoon collection from the Humourof the Peoples art collection introducedby Research Associate TatyanaTsankova, Director of the Museum Houseof Humour and SatireThe building up of a Bulgarian cartooncollection on European subject-matterstarted right after the Great Change inBulgaria in 1989. Being the flag-officersof progress, Bulgarian cartoonistsrecorded the discordance betweenBulgarians' claim to be a priori regardedas Europeans due to the country'sgeographical location and the actual factof the matter: the citizens in the ECmember-states were painting the map ofEurope in bright colours, yet Bulgariaremained a grey and featureless blotchoutside the map borders. Bulgaria was nota piece of the European jigsaw puzzle!Bulgarians have always had enoughself-confidence and have measuredthemselves against the rest of Europe -against its progressive minds, revolutionaries, inventors and artists. Thus, in order to move forward and todefeat negativism and negation, stubbornness and negligence, Bulgarianswould begin to draw an "optimistic theory"of the country's development. In 1998 the town of Gabrovo hostedthe Day of Europe - the first swallow inour "European" summer. The team of theHouse of Humour and Satire became soelated and dreamy that they bravelyannounced the National CartoonCompetition Europe Dreams of Bulgaria. The mood of the organizers overwhelmedthe artists, and their cartoons camebrimming with humour and stinging withsatire. The cartoonists called for a changewithin us, for the right to be judged on themerits of our talent and sense of humour, for a requited dream in which Bulgarianswould not only dream about Europe, butEuropeans would also dream aboutBulgaria. The cartoonists insisted onputting a pinch of aromatic Bulgarianspices into the European dish withoutmaking it too hot and salty. We continued comparing ourselves toEurope, and in the years to come eachedition of the International Biennial ofHumour and Satire in the Arts that we heldregistered entries which reflected our"stepping in line with Europe".So it took ten years to bring forth thecollection Step in Line With Europei - arecord of common disappointments, joyand excitement, skeptical smiles andmischievous winks that accompanied uson the road to the ultimate goal, i.e. tojoin the Big European family called theEuropean Union.________________________________________________28 Page., Size: 21x30 cm.,Full Coloured.,(Gabrovo - Bulgaria)ISBN: 978-954-8714-33-4BLOG SANJINEZCartoon and Caricaturehttp://blog.sanjinez.comSEYRAN CAFERLiCARTOON WEB PAGEhttp://www.cartooncenter.net
