22 Piotr GodlewskiA GLOBAL AND LOCAL DIMENSION OF CONTEMPORARY SPORTSummaryMore than a billion people in the world practice or remain somehow in touch withsport. The popularity and universality of sport underlies its potential global and continent-wide.Sport generates about 2% of the GNP, while large sporting events have theirinvigorating influence on macro- and microeconomies.Within heterogenic sport there are different forms of competition, various goalsand various means of achieving them. Contemporary performance sport is based onfour major pillars: pageantry, commercialisation, universalism and globalisation. In the European Union member states sport arouses large interest. Mostly this isreflected in amateur movements, yet the significance of professional sport is on the rise.In Poland this sphere of social activity is undergoing a switch-over to marketeconomies and European standards. In sport policy priority is attached to developinglocal sport in: social, economic and educational spheres. Local sport should be treatedas a factor accelerating economic growth and promoting creation of new work places, especially as a tool of urban revitalisation or of development of rural areas.Translated by Piotr Godlewski
