AUTHOR: Gašper Brežnjak, T2b Past, present and future of science and technology I am not completely thrilled about today's world and the society. I'm not thrilled because I have noticed that more and more people in general (not just teenagers and youths) become dependent or addicted to all these devices that science allows. People are slowly becoming dependent of computers, televisions and various phones and tablets, which are available at almost every household in the world. And not only dependence, if I watch from an ecological point of view on that problem, you can see how all these devices lead to a greater dependence, this dependence leads us on to the need to purchase other desired multiple devices, these purchases then lead to increasing consumption of materials and energy and that it is one of the main causes of global warming (because of all thes gases and the energy released in the factories), environmental pollution and obesity. On that whole we can look positively at science and technology. If you just think about how all those devices facilitate our everyday life. For example, all of these household items (a washing machine, a dishwasher, a dryer, a microwave, an oven, a vacuum cleaner, an iron, etc.) have been made possible by science and technology that greatly facilitate our everyday life. We use them to save a lot of time and work, which is positive. If you look at older people who live alone, without these devices their lives would be very difficult as they would struggle to perform all of these tasks, which are now performed by these devices. The problem is also that this free time that you get by using household appliances, people usually spend watching television and all other screens enabled by technology, which turn out to have a negative effect. I support science and technology, with everything they have contributed to the development of medicine, because without it there would be more sick people and deaths caused by the diseases. If I go back to the past, where science and technology were not very developed, it's my subjective opinion that life (at least from my considerations) was better. I have that kind of opinion because, when I listened to my parents and grandparents, I concluded that life was slightly better. For me personally it was better, because children and teenagers were growing up healthier. They grew up healthier because they were less in contact with all this radiation, which is the product of the devices that surround us. For the adults it is similar. They worked alone without the help of all these machines. That was good from a specific perspective, but bad from another. All generations generally were more active (playing sports on a playground / at home, playing with friends...) and that is one of the causes of a healthier lifestyle. To sum up, science and technology bring us positive and negative consequences. Among the positive belongs free time that comes from using electronic devices, more intensive development of medicine... While among the negative there is obesity, dependency or addiction to these devices, the radiation, which has a negative impact on health, environmental pollution and atmospheric pollution, and ultimately less communication inside generations. My opinion of the future and the anticipation of the future is not good, so I hope that I am wrong. I believe that children will be in touch with these phones, tablets, PCs, TVs and other devices at much younger ages, which will be very damaging to their health. From this I conclude that the number of cancers and other diseases will increase (as a result of radiation). Regarding teenagers and youths I won't say much, because I think there won't be many changes. The only thing that will otherwise change, will be that scientists will create some new devices which teenagers will become obsessed with. Or teenagers will just easily spend more time in front of screens and less among peers. As regarding the adults, I think that they will just spend much more time in front of screens like today's teenagers. Or their jobs will change in a way that they will be more in contact with the electronics. If I sum up all together, I would say that everything is good, but only to a certain extent. If it's more positive or more negative it depends crucially on the purpose and method of using it. Finally, I would only say that without science and technology today’s world would no longer exist, but we could determine some limits to the use of it. Priloga 47
AUTHORS: Kristjan Stopar & Urban Košale, T3b The future of technology Have you ever asked yourself what technology is? Technology is a big part of our modern society. Take a look around you. Everything you see has been made possible with the help of technology. In ancient times philosophy was the main draft horse that pulled development on. Until the first industrial revolution, literature was the main appreciated. But after the first and especially the second industrial revolution everything changed. People like Nikola Tesla and Thomas Alva Edison opened our eyes. We started to think more broadly, technologically and especially more revolutionary. However, the real BANG started with companies like Apple and Microsoft, they were the ones who started the age of information, the age that we are currently living in. Just the fact that we have created more information in the last forty years than we did from the beginning of our journey about 1.5 million years ago is fascinating. Today technology is advancing rapidly. Everything around us is somehow connected to an environment called the Internet of things (IoT), devices are becoming more and more multifunctional and they play a big role in our lives. What about the future? Currently there are companies like Tesla, SpaceX, Google, Microsoft, Uber and so on, that are shaping the foundations for future generations. In the future we will colonize Mars, start with Moon mining, create artificial intelligence, make fully autonomous cars and maybe even see the real hover boards from the movie Back to the future.
