A LESSON IN DEMOCRACY 

The referendum on the opening of Portage 

and Main to pedestrians is a lesson in 

democracy for all of us

rior to the October 24, 2018 City of Winnipeg Referendum, 

Ukrainian Winnipeg printed an editorial re-

garding the opening of the Portage Ave and Main St 

intersection to pedestrians. It was enlightening to read how 

the most popular publication in Winnipeg’s Ukrainian community 

highlighted the pros and cons of opening the iconic 

intersection. 

The results of the October 24, 2018 referendum were 

clear: 65% of Winnipeggers voted against opening the intersection 

to pedestrian crossings. A minority of 35% were in 

favour of opening the intersection to pedestrian pathways. 

On this same day, Mayor Brian Bowman of Winnipeg 

was re-elected. During his current election campaign, Mr. 

Bowman continued to express his support for opening the 

intersection, as he had done in his first election campaign 

four years ago. However, Mayor Bowman also promised to 

respect the wishes of the majority vote in the referendum. 

According to the results, and the Mayor’s promise to honour 

the majority vote, the intersection of Portage and Main will 

remain closed to pedestrians. 

While the “TEAMOPEN” campaign was very vocal and 

received support from many media outlets, the opposing 

camp was virtually invisible, and yet the vast majority of 

Winnipeggers voted against the opening of the intersection. 

According to the Probe Research poll released in September 

2018, the top three concerns against opening the intersection 

were: 

• it will slow down traffic through the intersection, 

• it will cost too much 

• it will be unsafe for pedestrians. 

The “TEAMOPEN” camp argued that opening this intersection 

would help with downtown development, safety and 

accessibility. Regardless of the final vote, the newly-elected 

City Council will face the daunting task of repairing the 

underground sections of the intersection which, in the near 

future, will require multi-million dollar investments. 

The key takeaways from the referendum for Winnipeg 

could be as follows: 

1. Every vote counts. Voters should know that their voices 

matter and that they are free to contact their elected officials 

with issues significant to themselves as citizens 

of Winnipeg. The fact that people from different political 

stripes and different ages came together and voted 

against the Mayor’s potential plan demonstrates that 

politicians must listen to voters, so referendums don’t 

have to be called on issues like Portage and Main in the 

future. 

2. Referendums are rare and unpredictable. In Canada, 

it is unusual and uncommon to make major decisions 

in public referendums. Let’s not forget that on the same 

day as the Portage and Main referendum took place, 

eight municipalities in Manitoba conducted plebiscites 

on allowing the sale of cannabis in their communities. 

Results varied from community to community. Despite 

producing unpredictable results, referendums remain a 

powerful decision-making option. 

3. The public should always participate in politics and 

politicians should pay attention to the needs of the 

electorate. In the grand scheme of things, the cost of 

opening Portage and Main, estimated at $12 million, 

is significantly smaller as compared to the Investors 

Group Field football stadium ($210 M) or the Highway 

59 and North Perimeter Highway interchange ($250 

M). The approval to proceed with these projects was 

not the result of a referendum and consequently did 

not generate much controversy. Perhaps, a referendum 

for the opening of Portage and Main was not necessary. 

However, this famous location has a special place in the 

hearts of many Winnipeg residents and the proposed 

changes ignited emotions and generated debate. 

One can argue that that recent elections and referendums 

from the election of the United States of America’s President 

Donald Trump, to Brexit have one thing in common. Political 

pundits, mainstream media and career politicians have failed 

to predict how the public will react to issues which generally 

are decided upon by politicians. 

This is a new trend in a representative democratic system 

in which every few years the public elects politicians in 

whom they place their trust. 

It is with appreciation to Ukrainian Winnipeg magazine 

for the coverage of the Portage and Main referendum, that 

we can relay to our friends and families in Ukraine how 

democracy operates in Canada. Next year, the citizens of 

Ukraine will vote in their upcoming elections for President 

and Parliament. We all should keep the recent Winnipeg 

referendum as a strong reminder that politicians should pay 

attention to voters throughout their time in office in order 

to avoid having unpredictable referendums on important 

issues in the future. УВ

BIG HIT IN UKRAINE

ormer National Hockey League stars Wayne and Dave 

F Babych travelled to Ukraine on November 7, 2018, to 

conduct a hockey skills camp for the Halitsky Levy HC 

located in Novoyavorivsk, Lviv Oblast. Wayne was chosen 3rd 

overall by the St.Louis Blues in 1978 and his younger brother 

Dave was chosen by the Winnipeg Jets, 2nd overall in 1980. 

At the time of Dave’s selection, the Babych Brothers were the 

highest-drafted pair of brothers in NHL history. 

The Canadian Friends of Hockey in Ukraine, CFHU were very 

pleased that the Babych brothers decided to embark on this 

adventure. The fact that Wayne was a power forward with a 

career-high of 54 during his 3rd season with the St. Louis Blues 

and Dave was an NHL Allstar defenceman, provided the CFHU 

with an excellent team for the Hockey Skills Camp in Ukraine. 

It should be mentioned that the Babych Brothers are the first 

Canadian NHL players to work with young Ukrainian hockey 

players. 

Before travelling to 

Novoyavorivsk, the Canadian 

delegation was hosted 

by several organizations in 

Lviv. The National Olympic 

Committee of Ukraine hosted 

a reception where Wayne 

and Dave Babych were 

introduced to the sports 

community. As well, the 

CFHU represented by Nestor 

Budyk and Myron Zatwarnicki 

signed a trilateral 

agreement on cooperation 

between Yurij Mayboroda 

of the NOC of Ukraine in 

Lviv Oblast, and by Mykola 

Romanyuk of the Lviv Oblast 

Ice Hockey Federation. 

WAYNE AND DAVE BABYCH 

After visiting with the 

NOC of Ukraine, the delegation 

travelled to the 

Lviv University of Physical Education. This faculty is named 

in honour of Ivan Bobersky who is considered the creator of 

Ukrainian Football. In the early 1900’s Bobersky also developed 

programs in athletics, boxing, hockey and skiing for Ukrainian 

youth. 

On November 9th, the group left Lviv and travelled to 

Novoyavorivsk. The Halitsky Levy HC was hosting the Carpathian 

Junior Hockey League U19 tournament with 7 teams from 

Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine participating. This was 

a great opportunity to see some excellent international hockey 

and meet coaches and managers from the various teams. 

Dave Babych admitted, “When we flew to Ukraine, we did not know what the 

level of play would be for the red-black (Halitsky Levy). We were pleasantly 

impressed by the matches of the Novoyavorivsk team in the Carpathian League.”

The Halitsky Levy were the eventual champions and were presented the 2018 Lviv Trophy for their victory. 

After the tournament, the Babych brothers conducted a three-day skills camp for the Halitsky Levy. This 

camp provided both players and coaches with an opportunity to get exposed to the Canadian system of 

hockey. The players were divided into three age groups and quickly adapted to their 

new drills and routines. 

Dave Babych commented, “They are wonderful players and very good participants. 

The level is close to what we have in Canada and from what I see, 

their skills are high.” 

Wayne Babych added, “There are even a few world-class players who could 

perform well in Canada or the USA. They have a very good coach who brought 

them up from children to the age of 19.” 

Head Coach Mihail Chikantsev concluded, “This camp is an invaluable experience 

for the Levy and our guys couldn’t wait to be on the ice.” 

During the skills camp, the 

delegation had an opportunity 

to visit the Canadian 

forces base in Yavoriv, which 

is part of Operation UNI- 

FIER. Several of the “older” 

members remembered when 

Wayne played for the Quebec 

Nordiques NHL team. 

In fact, the Canadian Forces 

hockey team asked the Babych brothers to do a special hockey 

practice in preparation for their upcoming against Yavir men's 

team in Novoyavorivsk. 

After the skills camp, the delegation 

returned to Lviv. Dave and Wayne 

accompanied by Andrii Marych travelled 

to Brody district to visit the selo 

of Bilyavtsi where their paternal was 

raised. While the Babych brothers 

were visiting their ancestral village 

Nestor and Myron were provided with 

a tour of the Lviv Stadium. This state 

of the art 40,000 seat stadium was 

built for UEFA EURO 2012. 

In a relatively short period of 

time, one of the goals of the CFHU 

providing a high-level instruction to 

young hockey players in Ukraine was 

accomplished. We are very grateful 

that Dave and Wayne took time out 

from their busy schedule to share 

their experiences playing in the NHL. 

It must be noted that while we were 

enjoying the sites of sounds of being in 

Ukraine fellow CFHU member Roman 

Yereniuk was busy planning the Help 

Hockey in Ukraine fundraiser. This 

event is being held Friday, December 

14th at the Canad Inns Garden 

City from 6:00 – 9:00. Tickets are

o commemorate the 85th anniversary the Famine-Genocide 

of 1932-33 in Ukraine, the Ukrainian community in Winnipeg 

dedicated over two weeks of activities from November 

8th to 27th to acknowledge this human tragedy. 

Manitobans of Ukrainian Canadian decent like others around the 

world in the Diaspora, formally commemorated the Holodomor 

on the fourth Saturday in November as the Ukrainian Famine and 

Genocide Memorial Day. 

Prior to the Memorial Community Requiem Prayer Service 

(Panakhyda) on Saturday, November 24th, 2018 in front of the 

Holodomor Monument at Winnipeg City Hall in honor of the 

Victims of the Holodomor and the Holodomor Commemoration 

inside the City Administrative Building there were several other 

events scheduled. 

To highlight a few, a Grade 5-12 teacher workshop organized by 

Manitoba Education entitled Teaching Social Justice and Human 

Rights through Holodomor-Genocide Education. Also, a French 

language version Genocide d’une Nation, by the Yurij Luhovy 

documentary film Genocide Revealed at the Universite de Saint- 

Boniface. There was a book launch at Oseredok by Dr. Stanislav 

Kulchytsky and a presentation at University of Manitoba, The 

Famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine: An Anatomy of the Holodomor. In 

conjunction with book launches, Dr. Serge Cipko from the Canadian 

Institute of Ukrainian Studies (Edmonton) spoke at the Canadian 

Museum of Human Rights on his book Starving Ukraine: the 

Holodomor and Canada’s Response. 

A Holodomor Commemorative event took place in the Manitoba 

Parliament Building, Legislative Assembly where provincial politicians 

from all parties observed a moment of silence acknowledging 

the Holodomor tragedy of 1932-33. In addition, the Manitoba 

government with members of the Winnipeg Ukrainian Canadian 

community all gathered on the Legislative grounds at the Bitter 

Memories of Childhood monument (a forlorn child holding stalks 

of wheat) commemorated the Holodomor with a religious 

service conducted by the Ukrainian Orthodox and 

Catholic clergy. 

On Saturday, November 24th 

and onto Sunday, November 25th further 

disclosure of the manifestation took 

place in Winnipeg. The Memorial Community 

Requiem Prayer Service and Holodomor Commemoration 

was held at City Hall beginning with a 

Panakhyda, ecumenical memorial service, lighting 

of Candles of Promise and laying of a memorial 

wreath by Sonia Kushliak, accompanied by several 

Holodomor survivors. Following the Memorial 

Service all participants gathered inside the City 

Administrative Building and observances a series 

of speeches presented from the three levels of government. 

Greetings came from Terry Duguid, MP 

on behalf of the Federal Government, Hon. Cathy 

Cox from the Provincial level, Councillor Vivian 

Santos from the City of Winnipeg, and James Bezan, 

MP who introduced the Ukrainian Famine and 

Genocide Memorial Day in Parliament. 

Throughout the program Ukrainian youth participated 

in song and poem recital, reflecting the 

Holodomor. At the focal point of the Holodomor 

Commemoration, Dr. Orest Cap from the Manitoba 

Faculty of Education and Sonia Kushliak , survivor, 

spoke in detail about Holodomor of 1932-33. Closing 

remarks came from Joanne Lewandosky, president 

of Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Manitoba 

Provincial Council, UCC-MPC. 

St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox 

Cathedral hosted a public screening of an archival 

film documenting the largest public manifestation 

held in Winnipeg 35 years ago; marking the anniversary 

of the Holodomor of 1932-33. Before the 

viewing the film, a Memorial Service (Panakhyda) 


took place and lighting of a candle (the eternal flame). Lesia Szwaluk past 

president of UCC-MPC invited Luba Fedorkiw and Orysya Petryshyn 

to recite the poem Candle of Promise and Vasyl Balan, president 

of St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral brought 

greetings on behalf of the Cathedral. The main event was the presentation 

of the documentary archival film showing the awareness of the 

Holodomor, the mobilizing of the Ukrainian community in Winnipeg and 

the completion of the Holodomor monument in front of City Hall in 1984; this 

was presented by John Baluta, past president of UCC-MPC at the public screening 

on Sunday, November 25th, 2018. 

Throughout this commemorative 85th anniversary of Holodomor and the memories 

that have run deep with 

the survivors; the Ukrainian 

community was fortunate to 

have a photography exhibit 

at the Manitoba Legislative 

Building in the Rotunda. 

Over 50 pictures identifying 

survivors and events dedicated 

to commemoration 

of the Holodomor by Winnipeggers, 

within the last 25 

years. This photography exhibit 

by Norbert K Iwan was 

on display for a period in the

resting peacefully, we will pay 

tribute to those who sacrificed 

their lives in the struggle for 

personal freedom or the freedom 

of their country. However, it is with 

utmost sorrow and grief that we 

commemorate those who 

fell innocent victim to 

brute repression and genocide.

WINNIPEG PREMIERE OF LUHOVY’S DOCUMENARY 

“GÉNOCIDE D’UNE NATION” 

MARKS 85 th ANNIVERSARY OF HOLODOMOR 

Valentina Noseworthy 

his year Ukrainians in Manitoba and worldwide are marking 

the 85th anniversary of the 1932-33 Famine-Genocide 

(Holodomor) in Soviet Ukraine. Reaching out to the Frenchspeaking 

community of Manitoba to mark this tragedy, the Winnipeg 

premiere of the 75min French language feature documentary 

film “Génocide d’une Nation”, which exposes Moscow’s policy 

of genocide against the Ukrainian nation, was presented by the 

University of St. Boniface Cinema Club on November 8, at the 

University of Saint-Boniface. Montreal filmmaker, Yurij Luhovy, 

member of the Academy of Canadian Film and Television and 

director of “Génocide d’une Nation” was in attendance. 

Engineered by Josef Stalin and his regime, millions of Ukrainians 

were deliberately starved to death in one the greatest human 

tragedies of the 20th century. 

Welcome remarks were by Stéphane Oystryk of the Communications 

Department, University of St. Boniface, followed by remarks also in 

French by Prof. Orest Cap of the Faculty of Education, University of 

Manitoba - a descendant of Holodomor survivors. 

Yurij Luhovy then spoke on the making of the documentary, filmed 

in the original areas of the famine-genocide in eastern Ukraine. 

The film is based on testimonies of survivors, commentaries by 

historians, declassified Soviet archival documents and rare historical 

footage. He pointed out, these same areas are currently invaded by 

Russia, where an ongoing war has lasted for over four years. Much 

of the most recent archival documents found on Holodomor prior 

to the war, once again, are being targeted and destroyed. 

The narrator of “Génocide d’une Nation“ is internationally 

renowned Quebec actor Geneviève Bujold. She was recorded in 

Malibu, California, where she currently resides. Prior to receiving 

the French-language script of the documentary, the actress was 

surprised she never heard of the Famine-genocide. Voice-overs for 

the documentary are by Quebec actors Vincent Davy and Louise 

Latraverse. The English language version, “Genocide Revealed”, won 

12 international awards, including Best Historical Film. 

Special guests at the premiere were Claudine Lupien, Vice-Dean 

of Faculty of Education, St. Boniface University, and His Eminence 

Metropolitan Yurij (Kalischuk) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church 

of Canada, originally from Montreal, who speaks fluent French. A 

reception organized by Irka Balan followed the screening. 

The premiere of the French-language documentary was organized 

by Valentina Noseworthy of the Manitoba Department of Education, 

Irka Balan vice chair of UCC National Holodomor Awareness 

Committee and Prof. Orest Cap - all three descendants of Holodomor 

survivors. The event was sponsored by the Ukrainian Canadian 

Congress - Manitoba Provincial Council, and the University of St. 

Boniface (established in 1818). 


An article about the premiere appeared in La Liberté, Manitoba’s 

French language paper established in 1913. Nearly 10% of 

Manitobans are bi-lingual (French-English), with the majority living 

in Winnipeg and surrounding area. The film screening was the first 

major collaboration in Winnipeg between the francophone and 

Ukrainian community. 

On the afternoon of the premiere, at the invitation of Valentina 

Noseworthy, Consultant, Manitoba Education and Training, Yurij 

Luhovy took part in a Pedagogical Day titled “Teaching Social Justice 

and Human Rights through Holodomor Education” at the Manitoba 

Department of Education. Luhovy’s Educational version (26mins) 

of “Genocide Revealed” was included in the program, followed 

by a question period with the director. Among Winnipeg teachers 

present were Jeff Kozak of Springfield Middle School, and Orysya 

Petryshyn of Sisler High School. 

On May 27, 2008, the Canadian Parliament recognized the 

famine of 1932-1933 in Soviet Ukraine as genocide; the Province 

of Manitoba recognized the famine as genocide with the assent 

of Bill 217 on June 12, 2008, and on June 10, 2010, the National 

Assembly of Quebec unanimously recognized the 1932-1933 famine 

as genocide. 

Yurij Luhoy’s documentary is a stark reminder of the necessity 

to safeguard one’s freedom and human rights and bring public 

awareness to the Holodomor-Genocide. УВ

українську громаду

на пенсію заявив виконавчий директор Володимир Длугош. Вже майже рік 

директорське крісло кредитної спілки займає Нік Равлюк.

посмішкою, запрошуючи нас до 

офісу, пояснює Нік: «Сьогодні я 

чекаю на доньку, яка танцює в 

«Русалці» в будівлі навпроти». 

«Коли у вас з’являються діти, ви 

починаєте пригадувати традиції, 

яким вас вчили ваші батьки. Ви 

разом шукаєте першу зірку на 

різдвяному небі, співаєте пісень, 

віддаєте їх в українські гуртки», 

– розказує виконавчий директор 

Нік Равлюк. Робота в «Карпатії» 

також наближає Ніка до свого 

українського коріння. 

Українські кредитні спілки, окрім сповідування 

цінностей, притаманних всім кредитним спілкам, мають 

на меті ще й підтримку та розвиток української громади. 

Можливо, це не надто сильний аргумент для того, аби 

змінити свій банк на «Карпатію», адже великі фінансові 

організації пропонують більш широкий спектр послуг, 

зокрема, за рахунок впровадження новітніх технологій. 

Нік Равлюк не заперечує цього, але водночас запевняє, 

що «Карпатія» активно працює над тим, аби залишатися 

релевантною у цих техноперегонах: «Десять років тому 

ми оновили свою головну систему, але вона вже не взмозі 

підтримувати сучасні продукти. Це як старий Windows – 

ви не можете запускати нове програмне забезпечення на 

ньому, тому в 2019 році ми знову проведемо капітальну 

модернізацію». Це, зокрема, дасть змогу «Карпатії» 

працювати з Apple Pay. Матимуть з чого радіти і власники 

малого бізнесу: нова система матиме цілий набір бізнесфункцій 

та електронних звітів. Приводом для гордості 

також є повноцінне партнерство з системою електронних 

платежів Square. В «Карпатії» підрахували, що власникам 

бізнесу треба проводити біля 650 дебіт-транзакцій на 

місяць, аби використання 

класичного терміналу для 

електронних платежів було 

рентабельним. З кредитними 

картками ще складніше. 

Нік пояснив, що якщо 

клієнти використовують 

елітні кредитні картки (з 

нарахуванням бонусних 

миль чи відсотків), то такі 

транзакції власникам бізнесу 

обходяться значно дорожче. 

Square бере незмінну комісію 

для всіх типів карток. Певний 

час власникам бізнесів взагалі 

не потрібно буде перейматися 

з цього приводу, адже члени 

кредитівки зможуть отримати 

до 2,000 доларів на покриття 

комісій за транзакції. Жодних 

контрактів чи місячних платежів! 

«З цією системою ви 

можете приймати пожертви 

під час фандрейзингів, легко 

надсилати квитанції та накладні 

вашим клієнтам, автоматично 

вираховувати GST та PST, зрештою – приймати електронні 

платежі під час «гаражних розпродажів», – розказує Нік. «Це 

партнерство не принесе «Карпатії» великих прибутків», – 

зазначає виконавчий директор, – ми це робимо для наших 

членів, аби вони відчували, що ми розуміємо їх потреби та 

постійно відслідковуємо сучасні тенденції». 

Головною ж перевагою кредитних спілок завжди буде 

особистий підхід до кожного клієнта. Великі банки переважно 

працюють за бінарним принципом: ви або відповідаєте вимогам 

щодо отримання бізнес-кредиту чи іпотеки, або не відповідаєте, 

в той час як кредитні спілки мають простір для маневру. «Члени 

«Карпатії» є її власниками, тому коли ви заходите до нас, наша 

мета – аби, зрештою, більше коштів опинилося у вашій кишені», 

– пояснює Нік. Цей принцип є додатковою мотивацією для 

виконавчого директора «Карпатії»: «Кожного дня я йду додому, 

знаючи, що ми допомагаємо людям і нашій громаді, і ми будемо 

сповідувати ці принципи доти, доки ми існуємо». УВ 

Нік, разом з головним маркетологом кредитівки Брайаном 

Петренко, запропонували нам спільний проект – серію статей 

про українські бізнеси міста. «Я помічаю, що наша громада, на 

відміну від інших громад міста, не так завзято відзначає успіхи 

своїх членів. Ми би хотіли, аби українці знали про бізнеси своїх 

земляків, раділи за них та підтримували їх. Ми хочемо бути 

частиною цього», - підкреслив Нік.

Andrukhovych visited Winnipeg in November to present his most recent 

essay collection in the English language; “My Final Territory” and

his latest Ukrainian novel “Kokhantsi iustytsii “(Darlings of Justice).

We asked Mr. Andrukovych’s opinion about a variety of topics: 

The printing business in Ukraine: 

“Once can say it is blossoming. There is a big difference between what 

we produced 7 years ago and what we are now capable of. Today, a larger 

Ukrainian book store will surprise you with a variety of new titles.” 

Media in Ukraine: 

“The newspaper and magazine industries are dying. Ukrainian rely on 

Television and the Internet. As we approach 2019, (the election year in 

Ukraine), new TV channels which are controlled by political groups are emerging.” 

Political preferences of the Ukrainian people: 

“Ukrainians become disappointed too quickly. We complain and criticize a lot. It is good because we will 

probably never have an absolute authority like Putin in power. However, we are lacking continuity: we 

start from zero after every election.” 

The potential of regaining the lost territories: 

“This will depend on the inner politics of Russia. Perhaps, waiting might be the best tactic right now.” 

Russian language in Ukraine: 

“I don’t think we need to persecute or ban the Russian language; neither do I think we will ever become 

a 100% Ukrainian speaking country. Ukrainian has to become the most spoken language, as it is the most 

identifiable feature of Ukraine.” 


Making a living as a writer in 

Ukraine: 

“I probably would not able to 

make a living by only selling 

my books, but I believe it is possible. 

When the young Ukrainian 

writer, Max Kidruk, goes 

on tour with his new books, he 

manages to visit over 100 cities 

in Ukraine. It appears that the 

large scale of his promotions 

work out well for him.” 

Autocephaly for the Ukrainian 

Orthodox Church: 

“Undoubtedly, it is an important initiative from a historic standpoint. 

However, the biggest challenge I see is to assure that the 

Church is no longer Moscow’s ‘fifth column.’” 

Happiness: 

“I have no border between work and leisure. That is the best thing 

about being a writer: you just live. I consider myself a happy person.” 

Sofia Andrukhovych: 

“She is a great writer! I say this not because I am her father. She is 

working on her new book right now which I believe will be a ‘hit.’”

Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania and

THE GAMZA FAMILY 

hristmas time in the Gamza family is one of those rare moments 

when the whole family is together. It is a precious 

time for Vitaliy’s wife and children to see him, as they live 

in a small village in the Sarny region, in western Ukraine, but he 

works as a builder in the city 400 km away. 

“It is difficult to return home to find that your kids have grown 

taller and to realize how small is your input and influence on them. 

I wish I could work closer to home,” he said. “There is total unemployment 

locally. There are no roads, no manufacturing, no 

business.” 

“Only a few can get work in woodwork or have agricultural machines 

to do farming. We live in an unfinished building and do not 

have social benefits.” 

Another reason for Vitaliy to wish he was home more often: “Until 

the age of four, my son Vladyslav was a lively, joyful boy, the apple 

of my eye, our firstborn. Suddenly he had a brain inflammation and 

since then, has been paralyzed, unable to see and talk. He can hear 

and sometimes communicate with movement.” 

The children’s grandmother has devoted herself to the care of 

her grandson Vladyslav, now 13, who has severe cerebral palsy. 

She holds him tenderly on her lap. The two seem to be so close 

that his pain is her pain too. 

She said, “We tried different doctors and clinics. His disease 

is so severe that he has little chance of improvement. The only 

relief for him is rehabilitation therapy, but in our desolate village 

with no hospital we cannot provide it. So I give him massages.” 

Vitaliy’s wife Lyudmyla is so thankful for such a helper. She 

takes care of her other boy, Valentyn, (10) and their two girls, 

Valentyna (8) and Vladyslava (7), as well as doing the housework

and farm work. She said, “When I was younger, I dreamt of 

an exciting, carefree life. Marriage, children, daily difficulties, 

poor living conditions and the disease of my son took 

away my expectations.” 

“Still, I would not trade it for anything else. I need to give 

much, but I receive so much love from my family in return. 

It gives meaning to each day.” 

The absence of stability and economic potential is common 

to most of the families here. Parents hope for a better 

future for their children; the situation in the country continues 

to worsen, and it leads to further frustration. 

Vitaliy said, “Many men and some women in my village 

abuse alcohol. They give up trying for a better life.” 

Mission Without Borders is working with families in the 

region of Sarny, providing them with support and helping 

them to overcome poverty. Last year at Christmas, over 

7,000 Operation Christmas Love (OCL) parcels - filled with 

food and treats - were distributed all over Ukraine to families 

in need, people with disabilities, and people displaced 

by the conflict in the east. 

“The support of MWB helps me to believe that I can do it,” 

said Vitaliy. “We are so thankful for the regular provision 

of food, clothing, footwear and hygienic items from MWB. 

This allows me to spend money on finishing our house. Your 

emotional support is also very important for us.” 

“And although we are not very religious, communication 

with people such as the workers of MWB helped us to see 

many things in a different light. Christmas became more 

meaningful for us. Our holiday supper was made with food 

we received in the OCL parcel. It was very symbolic. We 

feel loved, and it helps us to love each other more.”

he Sechka family, who live in a nearby village, also 

have a child with severe cerebral palsy. Lyuda, who 

is ten years old, does not know the joy of walking and 

running on her feet. Her strong father’s arms carry her when 

she needs to be transported. She is a restless girl, but when she 

is in her father’s arms, she visibly becomes calmer. 

Mykhailo, the father, said, “We have five children. None of 

them are in perfect health. The smallest boy seems to have 

serious problems; he is not diagnosed yet. Lyuda suffers very 

much. She requires rehabilitation and physical therapy. MWBI 

helped us to make a separate therapy room with facilities for 

her. She was supposed to have lessons with a teacher and to do 

exercises there. Unfortunately, due to a short circuit the whole 

room burned down recently.” 

“Still, we have no time for despair. I am building a small new house 

with the help of MWB and the local forestry. Soon we will be able to 

move from the old, wrecked one to the new. Our children deserve 

better living conditions. All of them have weak health and require 

warm, clean and dry conditions.” 

The mother’s name Nadiya means ‘Hope’. She added, “My husband 

works in forestry. It is the only work in the village, with minimal 

wages. It is enough only to buy some flour, cereals, sugar and bread. 

Social assistance is minimal. My husband has a good reputation as a 

hardworking man. We are helped by forestry and helped so much by 

MWB. We receive food, clothing, hygienic items, furniture, building 

materials. It is the only source where we can get the help we need.”

“I attend church services and it is preached there about Christ’s love. This 

is the way I see it in action. Although my husband is not religious, I know 

how thankful he is. Maybe, when we share meals prepared with foodstuff 

from the OCL parcel, he is praying in his heart, giving thanks for the people 

who gave it and for the opportunity of better living for his beloved children.” 

Families living in poverty in rural Ukraine have an even tougher struggle 

to face when a family member has a disability. MWB supports vulnerable 

families, giving out OCL parcels at Christmas and helping them on a journey 

towards self-sufficiency through our family sponsorship program. With 

the help of our supporters, we can reach out to more and more families, 

showing them the love and care of Christ in the midst of their hardship.

70 th anniversary of PLAST senior sorority of 

M 

embers of the PLAST UKRAINIAN SCOUTING ORGANIZATION’S 

SENIOR SORORITY OF PERELETNI PTYTSI celebrated the 70th 

anniversary of their founding with a gathering of members in Winnipeg, 

Manitoba, to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the founding of 

Plast Winnipeg in 1948. Current and former members arrived from Ottawa, 

Toronto, Montreal, Minneapolis, Chicago and Kelowna, B.C, to celebrate 

this event. Plast Sorority Pereletni Ptytsi was organized by a group of young 

adult Plastunku who had arrived from the displaced persons camps of Western 

Europe. The name was originally chosen because it was still believed 

that the members would some day return home to Ukraine, but as time 

passed the name remained relevant with the arrival of more members from 

overseas. The main purpose of Pereletni at the time of their founding was to 

instruct and develop young Plastunu. Their main focus was to facilitate the 

acquisition of skills, values, beliefs and knowledge. They formed the heart 

of developing young Plastunu in Plast Winnipeg, with 70 years of important 

leadership at all levels in Plast. In addition, members have held the highest 

positions in many Ukrainian organizations and institutions in Winnipeg. 

At the meeting on September 21st,2018, the members welcomed their newest 

member, Lisa Zajac from Chicago, Illinois, who is the daughter-in-law 

of one of the founding members of the sorority, Halyna Harasowska Zajac. 

During the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Plast Winnipeg, Pereletni 

organized a fundraiser and presented a cheque for the renovation 

and rebuilding of the original cabin at Ukrainian Park in Gimli, Manitoba, 

a cabin in which many of them had spent their early Plast days. 

Also, during these celebrations, one of the members of Pereletni was acknowledged. 

Oksana Hrychenko Rozumna was the first Ms. Ukraine Canada 

chosen in 1955. A portrait painted by her son, Roman Rozumnyj, showing her 

both as a young woman in 1955, and today, was presented to her at a celebratory 

wine and cheese which hosted over 200 current and former Plast 

members. The elected officers for Pereletni are Marika Halkewycz Kurinna), 

Marta Korbutiak (deputy Kurinna, Eastern Region), Marta Skrypnyk 

(Secretary), Ofysia Parkasewich Treasurer), and Halyna Kowal (Archivist). 

During the meeting, the work of Pereletni in 2018 was reviewed. This 

included the presentation of the Canadian premiere of a film “SECOND 

CHANCE” by renowned filmmaker Adrianna Luhovy about a camp for 

orphans in the Carpathian mountains organized by Canadians, many of whom 

are Plast members. The funds collected at this event were dedicated to assisting 

the filmmaker in the development of future documentaries. УВ

Гордість за своє українське коріння 

підштовхнула учасниць 

дуету “Марина” до запису першого 

альбому «Спомини піонеров» 

- данину першим безстрашним 

українським переселенцям, яким 

довелося подолати безліч перешкод на Канадській землі, при 

цьому не загубитися і не втратити себе як націю. Мелодії та 

тексти пісень альбому намагаються передати труднощі українців 

в новій країні, їх глибинні релігійні переконання та радість 

від перебування на вільній землі. Перша композиція альбому 

«Країна Казки», мотивом якої є ще не втілена мрія про життя у 

вільній Канаді, разом з піснею «Загадав я за Канаду» увійшли до 

святкової програми Вінніпезького 

симфонічного оркестру присвяченій 

125-річчю українців у Канаді. 

Спів Марійка та Ірини під акомпанемент 

оркестру та слайд-шоу історичних 

фотографій не залишили 

байдужими жодного глядача. 

Другий альбом дуету - «До побачення» 

- був записаний у Канаді 

разом з музикальним колективом з 

України «Львівськими музиками». 

Ця унікальна співпраця представляє 

нове бачення улюблених народних 

та любовних пісень. 

На відміну від перших двох

повністю українськими, третій - 

“Весела новина” - є двомовним.

КАНАДСЬКІ УКРАЇНЦІ 

І ВІЙНА, ЯКА 

ЗМІНИЛА СВІТ 

риїзд єпископа Будки до Канади, його досить 

успішна праця з громадою над організацією 

і розбудовою української католицької 

Церкви були від самого початку не до 

душі її противникам і багатьом політикам. 

Було це не до душі й багатьом “своїм”, тим, 

які відбилися від берега і не переставали 

дивитися вовком на своїх же людей й сіяли 

серед них ще більшу ворожнечу. Всі 

їхні зусилля були спрямовані на те, 

щоб задушити католицьку Церкву ще 

в зародку, знищити українців разом з їхньою пресою та їхніми 

установами. Причиною такого ворожого ставлення єпископ 

Будка вважав поразку місії щодо навернення русинів до протестанства 

та поразкою ліберальної партії у виборах. Потрібен 

був лише привід, щоб поставити під удар і знищити самого 

єпископа. Цим приводом послужив пастирський лист владики 

Никити від 27 липня 1914 р., полеміку довкола якого підбурювана 

лібералами преса, звинувативши його у зраді, зуміла роздути 

до неймовірних масштабів. 

За подіями та реакцією вороже настроєних угруповань слідкували 

правлячі кола країни. За перебігом подій уважно стежили 

канадські католики та їхні вищі духовні чини разом з Апостольським 

представником католицької церкви в Канаді, архиєпископом 

Pellegrino Francesco Stagnі. Всі вони були в постійному 

контакті один з одним і з єпископом Будкою, твердим у своїх 

переконаннях, що зрадником його зробили не манітобські ліберали, 

а “свої ж зрадники, які співпрацювали з лібералами”. 

Важко переживаючи такий удар, владика вважав за необхідне 

дати пояснення до свого першого пастирського листа і вказати, 

щó сáме послужило мотивом до його написання. Пояснення 

єпископа Будки щодо згаданого листа були переслані на адреси 

Апостольського представника в Оттаві, прем’єр-міністра 

Канади, міністра внутрішніх справ та інших високопосадовців. 

Лейтенант-губернатор провінції Sir Douglas Cameron отримав 

їх з рук самого єпископа. 

Владика переконував уряд Канади в тому, що він, як єпископ 

католицької Церкви, представляє не лише громадян Канади, а й 

несе відповідальність за австрійських підданих, тих, які лишили 

в краю свої родини, резервістів цісарської армії, а також і тих, 

які проживають в Канаді тимчасово і не є і не мають наміру 

стати її громадянами. Багато з них є безробітними (федеральний 

уряд і так мав депортувати їх як непотрібних в країні). Такі 

люди залишаються поза церквою, легко піддаються соціалістичній 

пропаганді і приносять суспільству більше зла, ніж користі. 

Якраз тому їх треба було поінформувати про події в Європі і 

порадити, що в такому випадку необхідно робити. Єпископ

автор, перекладач, дослідник з питань генеалогії 

та історії роду. Вінніпеґ, Канада 

Никита вважав, що любити свій край і стати на захист своєї 

родини не є злочином. Дав владика також і роз’яснення щодо 

виразу “Канадийська Русь-Україна” і наголошував на тому, 

що станом на 27 липня уряд Великобританії не мав наміру 

вступати у війну (навіть ті, хто був при владі і міг передбачити, 

що Виликобританія вступить у цю війну, не могли 

такого передбачити!). 

Канадські католики разом з архиєпископом, не бачачи ніяких 

антидержавних злочинів у словах та поступках єпископа 

Будки, стали на його захист. Вони різко осудили безпідставні 

накиди на українського єпископа, але архиєпископ Stagnі 

вважав за необхідне все ж таки викликати його до Оттави 

(подано за книгою: Athanasius D. McVay. God’s Martyr, History 

Witness – Blessed Nykyta Budka. – Edmonton, 2014). 

Ще гірше прийшлося українцям, коли парламент Канади 

прийняв надзвичайний закон про воєнні заходи (The 

War Measures Act of 1914), який увійшов в дію 22 серпня 

1914 року. Згідно цього закону уряд країни отримав повне 

право на прийняття заходів, які гарантували б безпеку та 

правопорядок в країні на період війни або у випадку заворушення. 

Внаслідок такої політики всі ті, хто прибув з держав 

ворожого Канаді табору (Австро-Угорщина, Німеччина та 

ін.), вважалися “ворожими чужинцями” (enemy aliens). За 

ними могли слідкувати і кожен, хто викликав найменше 

підозріння у прихильності до ворога, міг бути арештований 

і без жодного суду відправлений в концентраційні табори 

(internment camps). 

Першою жертвою цього закону стали українці. Уряд Канади 

також “інтернував всіх тих, які зголосилися на поворот до 

Галичини чи Буковини, ... і тих, кого підозрювали в симпатіях 

до Австрії. Всі вони опинилися в таборах інтернованих. … 

Так тисячі чоловіків, яких єдиною провиною було те, що 

вони колись були австрійськими громадянами, замкнено 

в таборах, а на решту накинено строгий контроль, обмежено 

свободу слова, сходин і т.п. Це все використали також опоненти 

єпископа Будки, які, покликаючись на перший пастирський 

лист, доказували, що греко-католицька ієрархія не здібна безпечно 

вести своїх вірних через загрозливі роки війни” (Василь

dokumenty). Так було інтерновано 8 тис. 579 осіб, на яких було 

начеплено ярлики “ворожі чужинці”. Українців серед них 

було понад 5 тисяч. Їх позбавлено права голосу у виборах

та конфісковано весь їхній доробок. Крім 

того, 80 тис. осіб (більшість з них були 

українці) змушені були регулярно відмічатися 

у місцевих поліцейських відділах

Ще один удар своєї щербатої долі українська громада отримала, коли владу в провінції 

у 1915 р. перебрали ліберали, які зі сторінок преси продовжувала напади на 

українців та їхнього єпископа. Вони добилися й закриття всіх двомовних шкіл, в 

яких навчалися діти наших перших переселенців. Згідно угоди 1896 р. (Laurier- 

Greenway Compromise) в цих школах дозволялося вести двомовне навчання при умові, 

якщо в класах нараховувалося щонайменше 10 дітей однієї національної меншини

освіти R. S. Thornton настоював на тому, що “...в Манітобі 

потрібно тільки одної шкільної системи й одної мови, бо 

створюється одна – канадсько-бритійська нація” (цитовано

щоб спалити пачки з двомовними читанками для 

українських школярів, які якраз надійшли до Вінніпеґу з Англії 

(А. Господин. Початки українських шкіл в Канаді. – Вінніпег, 

1990. – С. 11). Було закрито і вчительський семінар, який готував 

своїх вчителів для двомовних шкіл. Протести української 

громади проти рішення уряду успіху не мали. 

Крім жахіття расової дискримінації, українці роками зазнавали 

і великий матеріальний збиток. Значної шкоди було завдано 

домівці читальні «Просвіта» у Північному Вінніпеґу, 

в якій повибивано вікна, знищено бібліотеку та всі меблі...
