DBS PTA Chairman’s message
For the parents who are receiving this DBSPTA newsletter
for the first time – the PTA extends its warmest welcome
to the DBS parents community. For some parents, this
is the last newsletter as your journeys with DBS come
to a conclusion – we bid you farewell knowing that the
start of your new journeys carry the same excitement as
when you first joined the DBSPTA. We believe your sons
have left their footprints at DBS and will soar high as they
exercise their wings bestowed by you and strengthen by
their alma mater, and we trust that there is no regret in
their paths save for the six years passing by too quickly.
This year is the 150th Anniversary of Diocesan Boys’
School. Its history, legacy and traditions are the
results of one and a half century of dedication of
its teachers, the prescient, tireless and unfazed
leadership of 11 headmasters and last but not least
the loyal brotherhood of generations of its old boys.
Our sons do not just inherit what is passed down; they are
also the authors of what DBS will be. As Headmaster Ronnie
Cheng pointed out: “That’s the thing about DBS; there is a
drive to always seek a higher plane.” I hope you will take
the time to read his sharing in the article: “Extraordinary
Achievement … Extraordinary Commitment.”
2019 is also the 20th Anniversary of the Parents Teachers
Association. We are in debt to the generations of PTA
Exco (Executive Committee) and to my 7 predecessors
for laying the foundation of the Association. As we
progress from one academic year to the next, the PTA
aims to build a parents community so we can walk
alongside each other in our journeys of DBS parenthood.
Among us are parents at various stage of this journey.
DBS is both Disneyland and Shaolin Monastery. Dreams,
fun, blood and sweat are the elements of our sons’ journey.
We parents also have the same elements in our parenting
journey. Though, a saying “one must let go in order
for a kite to fly high” reminds us that secondary school
parenthood is also about the art of letting go while guiding.
Kite flying is a sport. Skillful alternation between
releasing and retracting the kite-line helps the kite to
scale robustly. Knowing the air current in the sky coupled
with timely steering helps the kite to achieve and stay at
higher attitude. Our boys are kites of different size and
shapes. Societal influences and challenges are air current
that can swiftly change. So I hope PTA can be a learning
and sharing community that journey together as our
sons transform from fledgling eaglets to soaring eagles.
In this newsletter, I hope you can find something that helps
you recall the fondness of the past year. Maybe it is the
recollection of your participation in the PTA activities, or
the voices of students, parents or teachers, or the sharing
of our headmaster. Above all, I hope it will encourage
you to put your own footprints in next year’s newsletter.
Each year, the PTA organizes and participates in many
events aiming at building the parents community and
contributing to various aspects of the school community.
Parents put in year-round behind-the-scene efforts, from
the Orientation Day before the start of the academic
year to the PTA Newsletter publication in late summer.
I am grateful for the faithful contribution of the PTA
Executive Committee members, the enthusiastic
participation of the parents community as well as the
steady support of the teachers and school staff for making
the 2018-19 academic year an exciting and memorable one.
