潤 物 細 無 聲
時 光 如 同 白 駒 過 隙 , 蓦 然 回 首 , 我 在 拔 萃 男 书 院 已 經 三 年 , 這 三
年 來 , 拔 萃 如 同 「 潤 物 細 無 聲 」 的 春 雨 滋 潤 著 成 長 中 的 我 , 讓 我
汲 取 著 知 識 的 精 華 ; 也 如 同 一 座 堅 實 的 鎧 甲 , 任 外 面 密 雨 斜 傾 ,
我 在 其 中 依 然 可 以 坐 擁 王 城 ; 又 如 同 一 位 無 話 不 談 的 夥 伴 , 每 時
每 刻 都 能 傾 聽 彼 此 的 心 聲 。 我 於 拔 萃 書 院 , 可 能 只 是 一 個 「 過
客 」, 但 拔 萃 於 我 , 確 是 青 春 這 一 站 的 「 歸 人 」, 此 生 只 一 相
見 , 便 永 生 難 忘 。
我 在 這 次 國 際 文 憑 考 試 中 取 得 滿 分 可 以 說 是 情 理 之 中 , 意 料 之
外 , 而 這 其 中 夾 雜 了 種 種 因 素 。 古 人 有 曰 :「 精 益 求 精 , 密 益 加
密 , 本 風 會 使 然 」, 只 有 在 道 路 坎 坷 不 平 時 選 擇 了 堅 持 下 去 , 才
會 有 今 天 優 秀 的 成 績 。 要 想 提 高 學 習 效 率 , 必 先 調 理 好 學 習 的 心
態 , 因 為 在 溫 習 的 過 程 中 必 然 會 遇 到 挫 折 , 而 往 往 只 有 那 些 受 耐

In May 2017, my father’s company’s order
to relocate us from Shanghai to Hong
Kong lingered. I had to change school, but
the admission period had ended for every
Hong Kong school I thought of.
The news was so abrupt and deluding
that I hided it from my friends. During a
physics lesson, Surya smiled, “Let’s study
Chemistry again next year.”
Bitter tears unzipped my lips, slithering
down the throat. As I swallowed them,
I tried to raise my muffled voice and to
tell him that I would neither study again
with him, nor with all of you, the greatest
friends that I had known for years; but
my teeth were grinding against my contorted
lips so painfully that not a word
spurted out.
It was as if my 9-years dream in Shanghai
had evaporated overnight.
In the wake of the news, my parents
wrote to ESF colleges and even called
LPCWC to ask if they still accept late
applications. Their admins rejected me
straightaway, saying that I would need
to wait until October to apply since they
have closed the admission period. Swayed
by their unamiable attitude, only DBS was
kind enough to read my parents’ email.
Fate brought me here.
Regarding that, I would like to thank Mr
Wu for considering my urgent application,
and ultimately accepting me into Grade
11. Another instance I depended on Mr Wu
would be after receiving my Cambridge
Medicine offer when I was more troubled
than delighted. Having been internally
rejected by DBS for all Oxbridge scholarships,
I could not send a single application
out, except HKSES which I was ineligible
for. I informed Mr Wu about this matter
and he was kind enough to bring it up
to the Headmaster. Upon enquiries, a
conclusion was reached which determined
my fate—that I would not be able to
study in Cambridge unless I carry a risky
$2 million loan possibly till my 30s. Eventually,
none of us received an Oxbridge
scholarship this year; possibly signalling
the sheer difficulty that overshadowed
even the best DBS applicants, who were
certainly much better than me since I
was not good enough to be allowed to
compete in the first place.
Upon opening the Pandora’s box, there
were several days when I would wonder
around after school till dawn. In the vicinity
of a gas station, the stench of petroleum
blended with the moist air, condensing
into a gauze fabric of mist which

間 合 理 地 分 配 給 每 一 科 , 並 在 複 習 時 立 下 明 確 的 目 標 , 以 免 自 己
迷 失 了 溫 習 的 方 向 。 同 時 , 在 我 們 奮 力 拼 搏 時 也 不 能 忘 了 日 常 作
息 的 重 要 性 , 因 為 只 有 在 這 種 勞 逸 結 合 的 狀 態 下 才 對 學 習 最 有
利 。 在 此 , 我 由 衷 感 謝 學 校 及 老 師 對 我 的 教 導 。 拔 萃 以 她 溫 潤 如
玉 的 個 性 哺 育 了 我 , 那 麼 我 願 意 在 吸 取 了 拔 萃 的 精 神 和 養 分 之 後
溫 柔 地 回 報 全 世 界 , 努 力 成 為 一 個 服 務 於 全 世 界 的 人 。
眼 看 即 將 在 這 傷 感 的 夏 季 離 開 拔 萃 , 我 希 望 激 勵 了 我 們 一 代 又 一
代 拔 萃 仔 的 拔 萃 精 神 得 以 傳 承 , 令 更 多 學 生 不 斷 攀 登 、 精 益 求
精 ; 的 確 , 拔 萃 , 是 一 輩 子 的 事 !

draped the city in diaphanous folds and
washing away all confusion and tears. A
few yards from the drainage collected
a muddle of encroaching undergrowth,
which flourished in an interspersed
pattern sporadically seen as the moon
poured softly from somewhere above the
veranda. Even my silvery palm conveyed
regrets; Disrupting the silence, a gust of
wailing wind swirled the trees, causing a
profusion of fallen leaves to capsize the
branches below, cracking several crispy
layers before a soft descent, as if they
were sobbing. Sobbing convulsively, her
emotions against the current, borne back
ceaselessly into the past, when rejection
was at least better than acceptance
without being unable to go, and when you
know you could possibly not have done
anything better to reverse the dilemma
since fate had stopped you.
Being entangled in this financial dilemma
extinguished the joy of scoring 45, for we
know academic success does not take us
to where we want in life.
Thinking about what you want to be
or pursue when you grow up might be
daunting at this stage. However, in a blink
of an eye, you will be graduating from
DBS and heading out to continue your
next stage in life. And so, whatever you
are planning to do in the future, you need
to be able to manage your time effectively
throughout your secondary school
life in order to actively prepare for it.
So this begs the question, how exactly
can you prepare for your future? This
can be answered by acquiring a clear
understanding of the three components
“what”, “why”, and “how” when it comes
to choosing your career path. In terms
of “what”, it is important to nurture and
engage your interests; this can be something
that you have enjoyed doing from a
very young age such as drawing, playing
a certain instrument or even reading. An
origin of interest could also be a particular
subject you find intriguing, a subject
which leads you to ask the teacher various
questions after class, or one where
you carry out research or read more
about it in your spare time. For me, due
to my cheerful, empathetic and talkative
personality, I am always looking forward
to participating in voluntary services
where I can help people in many different
ways. Along with my interest in biology
and chemistry subjects, this allowed me
to realize how medicine is an optimal
choice for me to pursue in university as
well as in the future.
Once you have decided or at least
thought of a preliminary subject, it is
time to address the “why” component,
which mainly consists of your reasoning
詩 的 煙 火 , 宛 若 星 落
( 前 言 : 筆 者 有 幸 被 邀 應 著 僥 倖 而 得 的 狀 元 名 銜 書 寫 一 段 感 言 ,
自 知 沒 有 什 麼 學 習 的 大 道 理 大 心 得 分 享 , 於 是 寫 寫 近 日 來 讀 詩 的
心 得 , 希 望 能 讓 大 家 一 窺 考 試 制 度 以 外 詩 歌 與 文 學 的 意 義 。)
在 這 個 追 求 訊 息 真 相 的 時 代 , 詩 歌 或 許 可 以 被 看 作 一 種 阻 礙 時 代
發 展 的 古 董 。 在 這 一 行 一 行 的 鉛 字 中 你 不 僅 不 會 輕 易 找 到 真 相 ,
還 會 被 反 復 蒙 騙 , 使 你 質 疑 自 我 , 久 久 不 能 自 已 。 就 連 李 嘉 誠 登
報 的 那 一 句 “ 黃 台 之 瓜 , 何 堪 再 摘 ”, 也 被 玩 味 咀 嚼 良 久 , 在 這 濁
亂 的 時 局 中 成 為 誰 嘴 角 不 明 的 微 笑 。
是 的 , 詩 歌 仿 佛 與 我 們 渴 望 看 見 的 出 路 與 光 明 背 道 而 馳 。 我 們 渴
望 看 清 時 代 的 面 目 , 渴 望 在 漫 漫 長 夜 後 能 除 下 口 罩 以 真 實 身 份 相
見 擁 抱 , 渴 望 遮 蔽 著 人 性 的 高 墻 倒 下 ; 也 渴 望 能 與 身 邊 的 人 坦 誠
相 對 , 渴 望 能 相 互 理 解 相 互 扶 持 , 渴 望 能 穿 越 人 心 的 距 離 來 到 彼
此 最 終 的 抵 達 。
可 是 我 們 也 慢 慢 意 識 到 , 沒 有 所 謂 真 相 , 只 有 更 多 的 觀 點 與 角 度
拼 湊 出 的 一 幅 殘 忍 的 蒙 太 奇 ; 我 們 在 吵 架 中 在 深 夜 裡 也 慢 慢 明
白 , 兩 個 人 相 處 並 沒 有 什 麼 對 錯 , 只 有 不 同 的 世 界 觀 在 縫 合 又 在
碰 撞 。 慢 慢 地 慢 慢 地 浮 現 的 真 相 是 , 原 來 沒 有 真 相 , 也 沒 有 對
錯 。
就 正 是 因 為 這 樣 , 詩 , 以 及 文 學 , 才 變 得 如 此 的 重 要 。 原 來 那 一
行 一 行 氤 氳 著 霧 氣 的 詩 句 不 是 在 融 化 世 界 固 定 的 輪 廓 , 而 是 讓 我
behind this interest. This component is
especially crucial as it acts as a confirmation
for what you might be doing for
the rest of your life. In addition, it allows
you to find the motivation to not only
aim higher in your studies, but also to
overcome any difficult obstacles along
the way. For instance, aside from the
aforementioned reasons, the origin of my
interest in medicine also came from the
many interactions I have with a doctor
who is a close friend of my father. I became
inspired by his empathetic and kind
personality, as well as how by becoming a
doctor, he succeeds in his mission to help
and serve people every day. Being able
to witness such a motivational story encourages
me to study harder continuously
so that I can also bear the same values
as a doctor one day. If you are able to
provide a personal reason for your own
interests, it can definitely benefit you in
the long run, especially for your personal
statement and interviews.
Last but not least, you have to wonder
“how” you can gain any further exposure
on this interest so that you can convince
not only yourself, but also other parties
with utter confidence and experience that
you are fully committed to this choice.
There are many ways to find your answer
to such question: one might apply for
internships at a firm relating to their
preferred subject, others might participate
in a broadening programme locally
or overseas, some might even consider
doing further research by reading and
watching more relevant content at home.
There are infinite methods to satisfy
your interests, but the key here is to
properly manage your time and finding
the most suitable activities that you feel
can provide a beneficial and eye-opening
experience for yourself. For example, if
you had an interest in studying law but
might be lagging behind in speaking and
writing English, you would want to find
a programme in a native english-speaking
country so that you could address
both issues at the same time. In terms
of time-management, you have to make
sure you balance the academic side of
things such as homework and revision,
as well as your extra-curricular activities
before thinking about pursuing your
interests. In my opinion, the summer
holidays are definitely the best time
to participate in your interest-related
activities due to its long duration. For me,
I participated in medical courses at the
University of Toronto and the University
of Cambridge last summer, where I
not only participated in discussions and
lectures, but also carried out experiments
and practicals in a lab environment. These
two experiences definitely provided me
with the necessary exposure for me to
realize how enjoyable and interesting it is
to be involved in the medical field, as well
as ensuring my career path in the future.
These three components can be treated
as a guideline as you start thinking about
your university applications. It will be a
tough process to endure and so it is critical
to be as well-prepared as possible.

們 意 識 到 在 不 同 的 觀 點 與 角 度 之 下 , 世 界 可 以 怎 麼 變 。 像 是 羅 智
成 在 他 的 巔 峰 之 作 《 黑 色 鑲 金 》 中 寫 道 :“ 我 們 創 作 / 創 作 是 隱 隱
然 和 每 個 既 成 的 心 智 相 違 背 的 。” 我 們 在 成 長 的 學 習 的 過 程 中 建
立 了 一 個 個 既 成 的 心 智 , 可 是 他 們 太 過 堅 固 又 太 過 尖 銳 , 於 是 碰
撞 , 於 是 撕 裂 , 於 是 不 可 挽 回 , 於 是 不 再 相 見 。
但 是 詩 歌 能 使 銳 角 軟 化 , 能 讓 碰 撞 變 成 交 流 , 能 把 撕 裂 縫 補 成 更
斑 斕 的 畫 幅 。 在 讀 懂 詩 人 在 一 言 一 語 中 纏 綿 悱 惻 的 感 情 時 , 不 知
不 覺 間 就 能 建 立 同 理 心 , 並 能 夠 理 解 身 邊 的 人 一 舉 一 動 背 後 的 思
緒 與 感 受 。 去 接 受 並 衡 量 不 同 人 對 於 同 一 首 詩 歌 的 看 法 時 , 也 就
漸 漸 能 夠 面 對 身 邊 或 者 或 者 社 會 上 不 同 觀 點 時 靜 下 心 來 , 明 辨 是
非 , 取 優 抨 劣 , 從 而 進 步 向 前 。 而 那 些 詩 人 的 故 事 與 經 歷 也 變 成
了 你 的 故 事 與 經 歷 , 於 是 你 帶 著 這 些 所 有 的 智 慧 , 在 這 濁 亂 的 世
間 中 走 出 屬 於 自 己 的 路 。
讀 詩 , 就 是 讀 人 ; 讀 詩 , 就 是 做 人 。
我 時 常 這 樣 想 : 詩 歌 如 同 煙 火 , 從 來 都 不 是 固 定 的 一 束 。 只 是 ,
有 時 候 照 亮 黑 夜 的 , 不 是 一 道 微 弱 的 光 , 而 是 紛 繁 斑 斕 的 星 星 點
點 , 落 在 我 們 的 掌 心 之 中 , 讓 我 們 許 願 。
我 , 希 望 能 以 詩 為 光 。
