Ramblers both young and old are enchanted by<br />

the bewitching landscapes of the Hochkönig hikers’<br />

Airy heights<br />

Hiking in Austria broadens your horizons – both inner and outer<br />

If you view Austria from an aeroplane you can<br />

appreciate the mighty mountain ranges that<br />

cover two thirds of the country and may feel a<br />

yearning to get to know the tapestry of villages<br />

and valleys for yourself. When you transfer from<br />

the fastest transport to the slowest you can<br />

experience it all, because the best way to<br />

appreciate Austria is on foot.<br />

The feeling that you have escaped the “higherfurther-faster”<br />

culture increases the feel-good<br />

factor when rambling. Nowhere is this sensation<br />

more evident than on the hiking trail around the<br />

Gosau lakes in Salzkammergut, popular for its<br />

breathtaking panoramas. If you seek major Alpine<br />

sporting challenges, best head a little further west<br />

to the “Glocknerrunde”. As the name suggests,<br />

this trail surrounds Austria’s highest peak, the<br />

Grossglockner (3,798 m), and Kaprun, a village set<br />

in a National Park, is the starting point for the<br />

seven day tour. With this majestic peak always in<br />

view, you will pass through landscapes imprinted<br />

with centuries of mountain farming, encountering<br />

a variety of vegetation zones and Alpine flora,<br />

accompanied by marmots and snow grouse,<br />

and, with a stroke of luck, golden eagles, ibex<br />

or bearded vultures.<br />

Hiking in lower areas also has its charms. The<br />

peace of an Alpine pasture, only disturbed by the<br />

gentle ring of cowbells, is balm for the soul of ><br />

every hiker after a strenuous climb. Salzburgerland<br />

is the Austrian province with the most Alpine pastureland<br />

and many of its 1,800 or so Alpine<br />

refuges can be used as stopovers on the Salzburg<br />

Almenweg trail. Hiking on Mieminger Plateau in<br />

Tirol takes you across gently rolling meadows<br />

against a panoramic backdrop provided by the<br />

Mieminger mountain chain, on endless, almost<br />

level footpaths or up and down hill across high<br />

mountain pastures as far as the luminous,<br />

turquoise lakes at Fernpass. The mountain inns<br />

and chalets in Austria’s Alps offer hikers not only<br />

delicious, organic fare, but also friendly accommodation.<br />

Here the choice ranges from a mattress<br />

dormitory to a comfortable suite. Some mountain<br />

lodges even provide a romantic nest for honeymooners,<br />

such as the refuge on the summit of<br />

Carinthia’s history-steeped Magdalensberg, where<br />

the “Troadkasten”, a wooden grain-store has been<br />

converted into an idyllic honeymoon suite. Those<br />

seeking a mountain lodge with history should ramble<br />

across the world famous Krimmler waterfalls to<br />

Krimmler Tauernhaus, which was a popular haunt<br />

of itinerant merchants more than 600 years ago. It<br />

is not just the mountainscapes that lend themselves<br />

to hiking in Austria. In the far east of the<br />

country lies Lake Neusiedl / Seewinkel National<br />

Park, the only steppe landscape national park in<br />

Europe. You can ramble on clearly signposted<br />

paths around Lange Lacke, the largest of 34<br />

saltwater lakes in Seewinkel, which is a meeting<br />

place of eastern and western flora and fauna with<br />

a quite extraordinary variety of species on display.<br />

Thousands of wading birds, such as avocets and<br />

plovers stop over here during their migration and<br />

can be observed in their nests and roosts from<br />

Tirolean Eagle Festival. The Adlerweg hiking trail leads for some 280 km through<br />

the Tirol: from St. Johann in Tirol’s lowlands, past the Wilder Kaiser peak, through the Brandenberg<br />

Alps, the Rofan and Karwendel mountain chains and the Lechtal Alps to St. Anton<br />

am Arlberg. You can also pick up the trail in Imst, where a festival in honour of the Kings of<br />

Austria’s hiking villages reveal the magic of walking.<br />

Ironman Austria. Every year in July around 2,200 athletes hurl themselves into<br />

the waters of the Wörthersee, when the starting gun goes in the early hours of the morning<br />

at Klagenfurt’s bathing beach for the hardest triathlon in the land – Ironman Austria.<br />

Competitors must swim 3.8 km, cycle 180 km and finally run a full marathon – 42.195 km.<br />

Bregenzerwald: Perfect hiking country<br />

The Bregenzerwald has an impressive variety of landscape: the green<br />

Alpine foothills merge seamlessly with imposing peaks which soar to<br />

2,300 metres; cool shady forests rub up against romantic river valleys and<br />

tranquil mountain lakes. A network of nearly 2,000 km of carefully signposted<br />

hiking trails gives access to the most scenic spots and viewing<br />

points. If you have a particular interest you can indulge it on a themed trail<br />

and find out more about the natural world or the life and work of famous<br />

local personalities. Nearly every village offers guided rambles throughout<br />

the summer, among them herb and flower spotting rambles, adventure<br />

days on the mountain, hikes to Alpine dairies and sunrise or sunset tours.<br />

On the cheese trail<br />

You can immerse yourself in the culture of cheese on the Bregenzerwald’s<br />

KäseStraße! Several events and tasting sessions initiate you into the secrets<br />

of cheese-making while hostelries and some award winning restaurants<br />

along the Cheese Road serve up regional delicacies and creative cheese<br />

dishes. You are invited to KäseHerbst, an autumn cheese festival from mid<br />

Lech’s Peak Triathlon. Clear air, pleasantly fresh temperatures and a breathtaking<br />

panorama provide the optimum conditions for a very special event in Lech am Arlberg.<br />

Individuals and teams all take part in the Lech Peak Triathlon and both amateurs and<br />

professionals revel in the sporting challenge. The three disciplines are mountain biking,<br />

up Alpkäse and Vorsäßkäse, specialities of the mountains; there will be<br />

cheese and wine tasting events, cheese-themed rambles, demonstrations in<br />

cheese-making dairies, plus musical and cultural performances.<br />

Hands Free Hiking<br />

Just fill a small rucksack – and you can head for the hills, because by<br />

evening your suitcase will be waiting for you at the next hotel. One of the<br />

most memorable hikes follows a three day route from Schwarzenberg to<br />

Au. This tour is leisurely and broken up into sections of 3.5 to 5 hours’<br />

walking a day on well marked trails. The terrain is pleasantly undemanding<br />

and suitable for “Sunday ramblers” (3 nights including luggage transfers<br />

from €383 per person).<br />

Bregenzerwald Guest Card<br />

Anyone staying for at least three nights in Bregenzerwald between May and<br />

the end of October is given a Bregenzerwald Guest Card. This entitles you<br />

to unlimited travel on the region’s public transport – buses and cable cars<br />

cycling and canoeing and the day begins with a 13.6 km long bike race from the centre of Lech to Zug as far as the<br />

Spullersee. Having reached an altitude of nearly 2,000 metres, the competitors must now canoe for one kilometre<br />

on the lake. The final stage is a run of around ten kilometres exclusively along mountain trails to Stierlochjoch and<br />

then down hill back to Lech. The 12th Lech Peak Triathlon will take place on 19 July <strong>2009</strong>. www.lech-zuers.at.<br />

the Napoleonic era can be up to six metres tall, weigh around eighty kilos and is worn by just one man,<br />

Austria’s lakes and rivers can be enjoyed in so many ways<br />

We all love that refreshing, skin-tingling on<br />

hot summer days, the welcome relief of a<br />

cool swim in the sun, the incomparable thrill of<br />

jumping into cold water. Austria may not have a<br />

coastline, but it boasts an incredible 9,000 lakes<br />

which, along with its countless streams and<br />

rivers, have an especially high water quality,<br />

adding to the feel-good factor. Some people say<br />

that the Wörthersee has the softest water of any<br />

lake, where swimming becomes an effortless<br />

glide through the depths. But similar praise is<br />

bestowed on all Carinthia’s bathing lakes – the<br />

Ossiacher See, Millstätter See, Weissensee,<br />

Klopeiner See, Faaker See and many others.<br />

The best way to judge is to try the water in<br />

Austria’s most southerly province for yourself.<br />

Whatever your choice, it’s a fact that in Carinthia<br />

the bathing lakes reach water temperatures of<br />

between 22 and 26°C in summer, the majority of<br />

them have water of drinking quality and are the<br />

ideal centre for water sports holidays for the<br />

whole family. Carinthia’s holidaymakers especially<br />

appreciate the mild, southerly climate and<br />

lake landscapes that often come with a backdrop<br />

more than just swimming and paddling. If you<br />

don’t already know the significance of a Dinghy,<br />

Magic, Optimist, Zugvogel or Laser, then you can<br />

be initiated into the nautical arts at one of many<br />

sailing centres in the Salzkammergut. When you<br />

register at a sailing school, the first decision is<br />

which of these boat classes you would like to<br />

master. Sailing professionals consider the<br />

Attersee to be their favourite water. For one thing<br />

the water area is generous (46 sq km) and for<br />

another the wind conditions are especially<br />

favourable, with the “Rosenwind”, a steady<br />

easterly breeze, providing unfettered sailing and<br />

surfing. Swimmers also feel at home here: every<br />

year in August there’s a competition where<br />

swimmers with exceptional stamina can compete<br />

in a long distance race across the lake. If you<br />

seek adventures under the water, the Attersee is<br />

a perfect location, as are any of the other lakes in<br />

the Salzkammergut. Divers in the Hallstätter See,<br />

at the foot of ancient mountains are rewarded by<br />

encounters with exceptionally large shoals of<br />

bottom of sheer cliff faces – and all this with<br />

perfect visibility. The Neusiedler See in Burgenland<br />

is considered to be the most complete<br />

surfers’ paradise in Austria. Strong winds and<br />

powerful waves have contributed to its reputation<br />

as the „Viennese Sea“. Kite surfers, who stand<br />

on a surfboard and are pulled by a sail, turning<br />

some fine pirouettes in the process, will find ideal<br />

conditions here. There has been an international<br />

kite surfing centre in Podersdorf for around ten<br />

years, and beginners are very welcome to come<br />

and learn this dynamic water sport.<br />

Wakeboarding is no less in trend, a sport that<br />

has developed as a combination of waterskiing<br />

and body boarding. Similar to snowboarding,<br />

wake boarders stand sideways on to the direction<br />

of travel and are pulled by a motorboat or lift.<br />

Freestyle fans head for the Wolfgangsee, where<br />

there are several wake board centres, or to the<br />

Danube Island in Vienna, where new wake<br />

board lifts have just been installed.<br />

If you prefer your water adventures at a<br />

slower pace, feel free to don your waders and<br />

unpack your fishing rod. For Austria has long<br />

been considered a top destination by anglers<br />

and fly fishermen from all over the world – not<br />

least because the catch includes such delicious<br />

culinary treats as char, grayling and brown<br />

trout.<br />

The pleasures of fishing<br />

The waters of Salzburg’s Fuschlsee sparkle<br />

in shades of emerald green, and anglers here<br />

Podersdorf Surf World Cup. The Neusiedler See in the east of Austria is famed<br />

Montafon – biking paradise<br />

The Montafon region has been considered a top centre by mountain<br />

bikers for many years now. There are around 860 km of mountain bike<br />

tour trails, from simple cycling paths to seriously challenging slopes, so<br />

every biker can find their dream route. More than 600 signposts guide you<br />

along the individual routes and guarantee total biking pleasure. The trail<br />

network was developed with Mountainbike Club Montafon and the routes<br />

are colour-coded as per the ski piste classification system which has been<br />

in use for decades: blue routes for beginners, red for advanced and black<br />

for challenging routes including sections where you have to carry the bike.<br />

Every section is described in the guide, with gradient profile, terrain type<br />

and distance in kilometres. All tours complete with GPS data, gradient<br />

When former US president Jimmy Carter<br />

stayed in Vienna in 1979 and took an early<br />

morning jog through the city, he was ridiculed by<br />

many. But not long afterwards the jogging wave<br />

of lakeside running trails circumnavigating the<br />

laid on to initiate beginners into exact science of<br />

running. Tailor-made “motion concepts” are the<br />

focus of Xundeitswelt running centre in the Waldviertel,<br />

where every runner and walker can find<br />

their perfect route on a choice of more than 180<br />

km of trails. You can enjoy professional tuition and<br />

healthy exercise in some incomparably beautiful<br />

forested and hilly landscapes, while tired muscles<br />

and joints are soothed in Harbach’s healing mud<br />

The Dachstein/Tauern Nordic Walking School is<br />

wholly devoted to Nordic walking in the Alps. This<br />

Wilder Kaiser family holidays<br />

Amountain of adventure: the Wilder Kaiser is famous for its<br />

unbelievably beautiful hiking trails and fantastic children’s<br />

and youth programme, but is still something of a well kept secret<br />

amongst runners and Nordic walkers of every age group. New<br />

running and walking routes in Ellmau and Söll complete with<br />

information boards and maps were opened this year in cooperation<br />

with the Province of Tirol and Innsbruck Running Laboratory. This is<br />

Mountain Running Championships. The Kaiser Marathon has been<br />

held since 2006 as part of the Tour de Tyrol series and follows a<br />

real mountaineering with cables and karabiners on<br />

a child-friendly climbing route. And in Carinthia<br />

land-lovers can become water-babies, for example<br />

on Liendl Farm by Keutschacher See, which has<br />

its own bathing beach. Holidays on the farm give<br />

If you add an excursion by pony or horse into the<br />

holiday mix, the thrills are limitless. Short and<br />

stocky, good-natured Icelandic ponies are especially<br />

popular with kids of all ages. Europe’s largest<br />

Icelandic pony stud is situated in Ampflwang, in the<br />

middle of the idyllic landscape of the Hausruckwald:<br />

completely to this traditional huntsman’s instrument, when musicians and music fans get<br />

The Montafon<br />

The Montafon region lies in the south of the Vorarlberg and stretches<br />

as far as Piz Buin which, at 3,312 metres, is the province’s highest<br />

peak. The world famous and hugely popular Silvretta High Alpine Road<br />

Four Cross. This exciting contest sees four bikers jostling for position as they charge down Planai’s race<br />

course. In the summer downhill competition, the winner is the fastest biker to complete the 4.5 km long<br />

On a holiday on the farm kids learn how to live with animals both<br />

large and small. There are calves smelling of milk, rosy piglets, woolly<br />
