Skævheder i svarene<br />

Spørgeskema-besvarelserne bærer præg af at de fortrinsvis<br />

kommer fra grafiske medarbejdere.<br />

I de personlige interviews har jeg søgt at opnå et mere<br />

balanceret billede af situationen på arbejdspladsen.<br />

Hvis rapporten skulle virke unødigt negativ, er det ikke fordi<br />

jeg mener det generelt står skidt til – men fordi de kritisable<br />

forhold forekommer mig vigtigst at påpege.<br />

For at få tilstrækkelig mange besvarelser var jeg<br />

nødt til at droppe et krav om at skemaet skulle<br />

udfyldes af en grafiker og en redaktør i fællesskab.<br />

Derfor er de fleste skemaer blevet besvaret af grafikere<br />

og grafikchefer, hvad der utvivlsomt påvirker besvarelsen<br />

– især af de mere holdningsprægede spørgsmål.<br />

Måske ville svarene lyde anderledes hvis redaktørerne<br />

havde ordet. Denne skævvridning har jeg søgt<br />

at rette op på med de personlige interviews på udvalgte<br />

aviser.<br />

Jeg har anvendt critical incident-metoden i de otte<br />

interviews. Teknikken går ud på at interview-personen,<br />

i stedet for at skulle beskrive sine generelle arbejdsforhold,<br />

bliver bedt om at fokusere på enkelte<br />

markante – positive hhv. negative – oplevelser.<br />

Ifølge teorien kan metoden, såfremt intervieweren<br />

arbejder tilstrækkelig dynamisk, åbne for en beskrivelse<br />

af generelle forhold, hvor det træder klarere frem<br />

hvad der virkelig har betydning for interview-personen<br />

– og for arbejdspladsen – end hvis man stiller<br />

spørgsmål af generel karakter. Det har været min opfattelse,<br />

at metoden virkede efter hensigten.<br />

Især de personlige interviews viste at nogle avisfolk<br />

oplever reelle problemer i organisation og samarbejde<br />

– mens andre (især i skema-besvarelserne) synes alting<br />

går som smurt.<br />

I 7 af de 21 besvarelser ser man således ingen væsentlige<br />

problemer i den måde informationsgrafikken<br />

kører på. Da yderligere tre har undladt at svare på,<br />

om de oplevede problemer, må næsten halvdelen af<br />

svarpersonerne være tilfredse med formen.<br />

Som en designchef udtrykte det: »Kun intelligens,<br />

energi og talent sætter grænser«.<br />

Rapporten indeholder to slags citater. Uddrag af bøger,<br />

artikler m.v. er forsynet med nøjagtig kildeangivelse,<br />

hvorimod jeg ved citater fra interviews og<br />

skemabesvarelser kun anfører den citeredes jobfunktion<br />

– fordi visse udtalelser kan opfattes som kritik af<br />

konkrete personer.<br />

Det er muligt at min karakteristik af avisernes grafikere,<br />

organisationsstruktur og grafik utilsigtet<br />

er kommet til at virke overdrevent kritisk og negativ.<br />

Jeg beklager, hvis læseren skulle få det indtryk, at en<br />

generel nedvurdering af avisgrafik var mit ærinde.<br />

Tværtimod er det min opfattelse, at der produceres<br />

kvalitetsgrafik hver eneste dag – og at mange avisgrafikere<br />

fungerer fint i deres job. Men da sigtet med<br />

denne rapport er at påvise nogle problemer og give forslag<br />

til deres løsning, forekommer det mig naturligt<br />

at de kritisable forhold vejer tungest.<br />

In order to get enough responses, I had to compromise<br />

on a demand that the questionnaire should<br />

be filled out jointly by a graphic artist and an editor.<br />

Most questionnaires have been filled out by graphics<br />

editors and artists, and this undoubtedly influences<br />

the responses, particularly those of attitudinal<br />

questions. The answers may have been different, if<br />

the editors had responded.<br />

I have tried to make up for this bias in the personal<br />

interviews.<br />

I have used the critical incident method in the eight<br />

interviews. It is a technique in which the interviewee<br />

is asked to focus on individual, distinct—positive and<br />

negative—experiences, instead of describing his or<br />

her general working conditions.<br />

According to the theory, a dynamic interviewer can<br />

use the method of specific questions to develop a general<br />

description, where it becomes more obvious what<br />

is really significant for the interviewee—and the place<br />

of work—than if the questions had been general. I am<br />

convinced that the method worked as intended.<br />

The answers showed that some newspaper people<br />

experience real problems in organization and cooperation—while<br />

others (especially in the questionnaires)<br />

said that everything went smoothly.<br />

Seven of the 21 responses see no major problems in<br />

the way their informational graphics works. Since a<br />

further three omitted answers to the question whether<br />

they experience problems, nearly half of those responding<br />

must be satisfied with the work.<br />

As one design director said: “Only intelligence, energy<br />

and talent set the limits”.<br />

The report contains two kinds of quotes. Excerpts<br />

from books and articles have accurate references,<br />

while interview and questionnaire quotes only refer<br />

to the job function of the person quoted—this is because<br />

some statements may be perceived as criticism<br />

of certain persons.<br />

My representation of the newspapers’ graphic<br />

staff, organizational structure and graphics<br />

may inadvertently appear overly critical and negative.<br />

I regret if the reader gets the impression that<br />

a general disparagement of newspaper graphics was<br />

my intention.<br />

METHOD<br />

Biased responses<br />

Most questionnaires have been answered by graphics staff.<br />

In personal interviews, I have strived to accomplish a more<br />

balanced picture of the situation at the paper.<br />

If this report appears unnecessarily negative, it is not because<br />

I think that the state of affairs is generally bad<br />

—but because I find it most important to point out<br />

the critical issues.<br />

On the contrary, it is my opinion that quality graphics<br />

are produced every day—and that many graphic<br />

artists function well in their newspaper job. But since<br />

the target of this study is to indicate certain problems<br />

and propose solutions, it appears natural that the critical<br />

issues are most prominent.<br />
