ästhetischen Qualitäten der Kunst
eine reichere Sprache sprechen
können als die normierten und vorsortierten
Bilder. Dennoch basiert
ihre Arbeit nicht auf einer einfachen
Moral, die Aufklärung und tiefere
Erkenntnis verspricht. Schließlich sind
die Bilder und Suggestionen, die in
Fernsehanstalten, Kinos, Museen oder
als Architektur und Design angeboten
werden, genau das, was die Welt
in vielerlei Hinsicht ausmacht und
was das Publikum will. In diesem Sinne
gibt es auch keine Instanz, die
verordnet, instrumentalisiert und
manipuliert und alle Bedürfnisse weckt
und befriedigt. Im Zweifelsfalle
sind es die Akteure selbst, die entscheiden
und verantworten müssen,
wie weit die Unterhaltung, die Vorspiegelung
falscher Tatsachen und
die faktische Beschreibung der
Wirklichkeit gehen soll. Und selbst im
Mainstream-Programm finden sich
kritische und kluge Kommentare,
drückt sich die Mannigfaltigkeit aus,
die sich auch in der medialen Dynamik
einer kommerziellen Ordnung finden
lässt. Trotz dieses Pluralismus bleibt
festzuhalten, dass es ein Diktat
der Bilder gibt: vordergründig und
affektvoll, polarisierend und vereinfachend
sind diese Produkte. Dieser
Verkürzung der Lebenswirklichkeit
und Wahrnehmung wird in der Arbeit
von Caroline Hake widersprochen:
über den Unterschied zwischen
Wunsch und Wirklichkeit lässt sich
nicht einfach hinwegsehen. Die
Angebote der am Konsens orientierten
Kultur manifestieren lediglich
diesen Unterschied, tun aber nichts
für eine Veränderung.
Caroline Hake not only analyzes the
fundamental visual characteristics of
cultural offerings or the myths
which frequently rush on ahead of the
images, but she also concentrates
to the same degree upon a discrepancy
between wishes, hopes, desires
and the actual status quo of the
present. The photographer lets the
images speak for themselves and
shows that the formal and aesthetic
qualities of art are capable of
speaking a richer language than standardized
and pre-sorted pictures.
Nevertheless, her work is not based
upon a simple moral which promises
enlightenment and profound knowledge.
In the final analysis, the images
and suggestions offered by television
studios, cinemas and museums
or presented as architecture and
design are nothing other than
that which in many ways constitutes
the world and indicates what the
public wants. In this sense, there is
also no supervisory authority which
engages in prescription, instrumentalization
and manipulation and
which awakens and satisfies all needs
and urges. In case of doubt, it is
the protagonists themselves who
must make decisions concerning and
bear responsibility for the degree
to which entertainment, the presentation
of falsehoods as facts, and
the actual description of reality
should go. And even in mainstream programming,
there exist critical and
insightful commentaries, and there
comes to expression that extensive
variety which may even be found
in the dynamism of commercially
organized media. In spite of this pluralism,
the fact must be kept in
mind that images have their own dictates:
these products are superficial
and emotive, polarizing and
simplifying. This reduction of life in
both perception and reality is
contradicted by the oeuvre of Caroline
Hake: it is not possible simply
to ignore the difference between
desire and reality. The myriad offerings
made by a culture that is oriented
towards consensus merely
manifest this discrepancy without
working in any way whatsoever to
bring about change.
