2009-2013,” that the U.S. IPTV market segment<br />

is expected to have 15.5 million subscribers<br />

and $15 billion in service revenues by 2013.<br />

IPTV TO BECOME LEADING PAY-<br />

TV PLATFORM BY 2014<br />

The Latin American pay-TV market will experience<br />

a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of<br />

almost 11% between 2009 and 2014, according<br />

to a new series of reports from Signals<br />

Telecom Consulting, with IPTV predicted to<br />

become the region’s premium pay-TV platform,<br />

focusing on high purchasing power customers<br />

and vertical market segments. This will<br />

result in operators such as UNE and Telmex<br />

migrating their CATV users to IPTV offered<br />

over HFC networks. IPTV growth in the region<br />

is predicted to accelerate from 2010.<br />

UTSTARCOM EYES REGIONAL<br />

IPTV OPPORTUNITIES<br />

IP networking solutions provider UTStarcom is<br />

expecting to see a boom in IPTV deployments<br />

in 2010, according to Diego Martinez, Americas<br />

VP and general manager for UTStarcom.<br />

Martinez said that Latin America still faces many<br />

challenges for IPTV to take off, such as the<br />

quality of last mile access as well as regulatory<br />

issues. However, that scenario would appear to<br />

be changing in some countries like Argentina.<br />

BAHAMAS<br />

IPSI TO LAUNCH IPTV DURING 2010<br />

Nassau-based firm IP Solutions <strong>International</strong><br />

(IPSI) has been granted the first triple-play licence<br />

in the Bahamas, with the company expected<br />

to launch its IPTV and broadband services in<br />

the first quarter of 2010. The company reportedly<br />

plans to offer IPTV (both live and VOD),<br />

gaming and VoIP services to customers.<br />

<strong>TELE</strong>FONICA DEL SUR OPTS FOR<br />

LATENS CONDITIONAL ACCESS<br />

Latens announced in December 2009 that<br />

Telefónica del Sur (Telsur), Chile’s pioneering<br />

telecommunications company now have over<br />

25,000 IPTV subscribers. Launched in July 2007,<br />

Telsur’s WiTV IPTV service is now in the second<br />

phase of deployment which sees the company<br />

heavily investing in upgrading and expanding<br />

their network and IPTV services and feature set.<br />

Telsur offers 120 channels of SD digital TV with<br />

EPG, parental control and VOD capabilities.<br />

COSTA RICA<br />

ICE TO LAUNCH IPTV IN 2010<br />

The Contraloria General de la Republica<br />

has given the Instituto Costarricense de<br />

Electricidad (ICE) the green light to provide<br />

IPTV services, endorsing a USD 19.6 million<br />

contract between the state institution and<br />

ITS Servicios de Infocomunicacion for the<br />

purchase of the requisite equipment. Now it<br />

has received the green light, ICE says the<br />

service will be launched in June 2010.<br />

VENEZUELA<br />

CAN-TV PREPARES IPTV,<br />

DTH SERVICES IN 2010<br />

CanTV aims to launch pay-TV services over both<br />

IPTV and <strong>satellite</strong> technology next year, the government<br />

said in a statement in December. CanTV<br />

has already deployed 1,666 <strong>satellite</strong> stations<br />

nationwide through which the company expects<br />

to provide new communications services to the<br />

national market and other countries across the<br />

region, via Venezuela’s own Venesat-1 <strong>satellite</strong>.<br />

IPTV SET FOR 45% GROWTH IN MIDDLE EAST<br />

According to Dominic McGill, the organiser of the<br />

Middle East Television (METV) exhibition and<br />

conference, the Middle East is also showing signs<br />

of swift adoption of IPTV, with 45% year-on-year<br />

growth reported in 2008. The demand is being<br />

driven by the increasing availability of cutting-edge<br />

convergence technology across voice, data and<br />

multimedia solutions. Etisalat is reported to be<br />

in the finals stages of a FTTH network covering<br />

the city of Abu Dhabi. The project, dubbed<br />

eLite, would make Abu Dhabi the first 100%<br />

FTTH-connected capital city in the world.<br />

ETISALAT, ENDAVO TEAM UP FOR<br />

ONLINE VIDEO PLATFORM<br />

Endavo Media has signed a multi-year platform<br />

licensing deal with Etisalat to install Endavo`s platform<br />

to support the roll-out of an IP-based overthe-top<br />

(OTT) video delivery infrastructure over<br />

its own Internet and wireless networks. Etisalat<br />

will market its video services to broadcasters and<br />

content producers across 17 countries, including<br />

all of the Middle East and part of North Africa.<br />

IPTV SUBSCRIBER BASE TO<br />

GROW 51% IN ASIA PACIFIC<br />

The IPTV subscriber base in the Asia-Pacific<br />

region is expected to grow by 51% this year,<br />

according to research and consulting firm Frost<br />

& Sullivan, closing 2009 at 9.4 million users and<br />

accounting for 37.6% of the global subscribers.<br />

The IPTV subscriber base in the region will grow at<br />

a compound annual growth rate of 24.6% annually<br />

between 2009 and 2014, climbing to an estimated<br />

23.5 million subscribers by the end of 2014. Frost &<br />

Sullivan believe that as much as 62% of the IPTV<br />

subscriber net additions from now until 2014 will<br />

come from emerging markets like China, Indonesia,<br />

Vietnam, India, Thailand and the Philippines.<br />

ANEVIA AND BNS TEAM UP<br />

FOR IPTV DEPLOYMENT<br />

Anevia and BNS have combined their expertise to<br />

provide Asian hospitality, broadcast and telecom<br />

service providers with high performance TV and<br />

video solutions. The Anevia-BNS partnership has<br />

already generated interest among IPTV service<br />

providers, leading to deployments in Singapore,<br />

Macau, the Philippines, Indonesia and Taiwan,<br />

where the companies’ solutions are powering<br />

Taiwan’s first ever HD-IPTV service for local<br />

operator Max Media. The first phase roll out to<br />

1,500 homes was completed in early November.<br />

AUSTRALIA<br />

IINET TO OFFER IPTV FROM 2010<br />

iiNet has boosted its metropolitan network<br />

capacity with new routers installed across the<br />

country, as the company moves forwards with<br />

its plans to start offering IPTV services from<br />

the first quarter of 2010. The operator has<br />

installed the new Juniper Networks’ MX series<br />

routers in its metro network exchanges across<br />

the country’s largest cities, with capacity rising<br />

in some areas from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps.<br />

TELSTRA SELECTS NETGEM<br />

BOXES FOR IPTV SERVICE<br />

Telstra has selected Netgem to supply the settop<br />

boxes and software for its upcoming IPTV<br />

service called T-Box, which will offer live and VOD<br />

content from its BigPond brand to its broadband<br />

subscribers. The operator will offer content<br />

from the BigPond brand along with Australia’s<br />

free-to-air terrestrial channels (in both HD and<br />

SD). The new set-top box features twin tuners for<br />

watching one channel whilst recording another,<br />

as well as time-shifting and PVR features.<br />

NBN TO BOOST IPTV LAUNCHES<br />

IN AUSTRALIA<br />

Australia’s proposed National Broadband<br />

Network (NBN) will help boost the number of<br />

IPTV launches in the country, according to<br />

Frost & Sullivan, with 235,000 IPTV subscribers<br />

predicted for the country by 2014, while New<br />

Zealand is also predicted to have 141,000 IPTV<br />

subscribers by 2014 as a result of its own new<br />

broadband network. Work on the new Australian<br />

broadband network has already initiated, with<br />

Tasmania to be the first state to initiate the rollout.<br />

CHINA<br />

SHANGAI <strong>TELE</strong>COM WITH 850,000<br />

IPTV SUBSCRIBERS<br />

Shanghai Telecom reached 850,000 IPTV subscribers<br />

as of the end of October, according to Beijing-based<br />

firm Marbridge Consulting. The number<br />

of IPTV subscribers across all of China stood at<br />

2.1 million at end-2008, of which China Telecom<br />

accounted for 1.6mn and China Unicom (formerly<br />

China Netcom, which was merged with China<br />

Unicom in October 2008) accounted for 500,000.<br />

INDIA<br />

BSNL PLANS PAN-INDIAN IPTV SERVICES<br />

BSNL has signed an agreement with the SmarTV<br />

Group for the launch of pan-India IPTV services,<br />

following a test launch of the service in a<br />

handful of major cities. No financial details of the<br />

deal have been disclosed. BSNL has said that it<br />

hopes to increase its IPTV subscriber base by as<br />

much as 100,000 by March 2010. The SmarTV<br />

Group has also entered a long-term contract with<br />

MTNL for the delivery of similar IPTV services.<br />

MTNL recently launched pre-paid IPTV services<br />

for all of its subscribers in Delhi and Mumbai.<br />

INDONESIA<br />

PT TO LAUNCH IPTV ON<br />

DEMAND SERVICE IN 2010<br />

PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) is to<br />

launch of an Internet service that will allow users<br />

to watch their favorite programs whenever they<br />

want on their TV sets or computers. The new<br />

IPTV service will be operational in 2010, and<br />

after two to three years, we aim to have attracted<br />

around 40% of our 8.7 million fixed-line subscribers,”<br />

said Rinaldi Firmansyah, Telkom’s president<br />

director. He added that Telkom currently has<br />

around a million phone lines that can use the<br />

IPTV system. IPTV will initially be available only in<br />

Jakarta, but will be offered in five more locations,<br />

including Surabaya, Medan and Bali, by 2011.<br />
