of On-Demand movies and TV programming via<br />
their TiVo media device from November 2009.<br />
The service includes new release movies, hit TV<br />
shows for the whole family as well as free music<br />
videos, artist interviews and music concerts.<br />
TELSTRACLEAR STARTS IPTV TESTS<br />
TelstraClear has completed tests of IPTV services,<br />
and indicated that it plans to deliver the service<br />
over the country’s yet-to-be-built ultra-fast broadband<br />
network. The tests took place in Wellington,<br />
using the fibre network of Whangarei-based firm<br />
Northpower to test the service. A new ultra-fast<br />
broadband network is planned to be built with<br />
investments of up to NZ$ 1.5 billion, covering<br />
three-quarters of Kiwi homes and businesses.<br />

KOREAN IPTV SUBSCRIBERS<br />
TOP 1.5 MILLION<br />
The number of South Korean subscribers to<br />
real-time IPTV topped the 1.5 million mark a<br />
year after the service started. According to<br />
the Korea Communications Commission, the<br />
country’s three IPTV service providers - KT, SK<br />
Broadband and LG Dacom - have achieved the<br />
landmark a year after the IPTV officially launched<br />
in December 2008. South Korea is expected to<br />
hit 2 million IPTV subscribers in early 2010. In<br />
comparison, it took cable 4 years to hit 1 million<br />
subscribers, and <strong>satellite</strong> TV almost 2 years, to<br />
do what IPTV has accomplished in 9 months.<br />
GOVERNMENT PUTTING PRESSURE<br />
ON IPTV OPERATORS<br />
South Korean government officials are being<br />
accused of pressuring executives of three<br />
large telecom companies to commit 25 million<br />
won in support of IPTV. Criticisms against the<br />
presidential office are escalating over details<br />
surrounding the IPTV affair where an administrative<br />
officer forced three private telecommunications<br />
companies to provide large-scale<br />
funding to the Korea Digital Media Industry<br />
Association (KoDiMa) to manage IPTV.<br />
TAIWAN<br />
BNS COMPLETES FIRST PHASE<br />
OF IPTV DEPLOYMENT<br />
Hong Kong-based firm BNS has completed the<br />
first phase of Max Media’s community-based<br />
IPTV deployment in Taiwan. Over 1,500 homes<br />
have been connected to the service so far,<br />
and the project is reportedly on track to connect<br />
a further 3,000+ buildings across Taiwan<br />
within the next five years, representing 10% of<br />
Taiwan’s population. The IPTV service delivers<br />
45 broadcast channels in SD and HD.<br />

Motorola’s Home & Networks Mobility business<br />
has supplied du with its VIP1200E and<br />
VIP1216E set-top boxes for the latter’s Microsoft<br />
Mediaroom-powered IPTV service.<br />
VIETNAM<br />
VTC SELECTS MINERVA<br />
MIDDLEWARE FOR IPTV<br />
VTC Digital Communications, the telecoms arm of<br />
state-run Vietnam Multimedia Corporation (VTC),<br />
has chosen Minerva to supply its iTVManager<br />
middleware platform for the delivery of IPTV<br />
services in Vietnam. Under the first phase of<br />
the project, the operator will offer IPTV to over<br />
100,000 subscribers across the country, with<br />
plans to expand the service in the near future.<br />
Minerva’s solution enables the delivery and management<br />
of next generation video services over<br />
broadband networks, including HDTV and VOD.<br />

MRG REPORT IDENTIFIES IPTV<br />
MARKET LEADERS<br />
The Global IPTV Market Leaders Report - October<br />
2009 (MLR) indicates that global IPTV subscribers<br />
will grow from 28 million in 2009 to 83 million<br />
in 2013. The European region will continue to lead<br />
in IPTV deployments in 2013 with 48% share,<br />
followed by Asia, North America and “rest of<br />
world.” In the IPTV Access sector, Alcatel-Lucent<br />
breaks the record by acquiring 51% share of the<br />
worldwide access market. In the Content Security<br />
sector, Verimatrix retains its #1 global market ranking,<br />
enjoying a 26% share of the global market.<br />
In Set-top Boxes, Motorola still dominates the<br />
global market, with 28% share globally. In Video<br />
Headend Encoders, Motorola also maintains its<br />
#1 global ranking with 38% share of market.<br />
AMINO IPTV BOX POWERED BY INTEL ATOM<br />
Amino Communications has announced it has<br />
demonstrated an IPTV set-top box that is powered<br />
by the new Intel Atom Processor CE4100. The<br />
new generation of Amino products will address<br />
consumer demand for TV-based entertainment<br />
from any source, including broadcast, on-demand<br />
and open Internet ‘Over-the-Top’ (OTT) services.<br />
The new CE4100 is expected to enable Amino<br />
to develop new types of hybrid/OTT devices<br />
that offer high flexibility and functionality.<br />
