dealing with postoperative complications (p = 0.35) or postoperative secondary
bleeding (p = 0.54) did not demonstrate statistical significant differences.
Comparing patients with cancer of the head and neck – splitted into groups
according to the cancer’s localisation – identified only patients with oropharyngeal
carcinoma having a significant better prognosis for survival by undergoing blood
transfusion (p = 0,0287). In all other groups (carcinoma of the mouth,
hypopharyngeal, laryngeal carcinoma, carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses and
salivary glands) this significance concerning rate of survival could not be proved.
Conclusions
This retrospective study suggests that transfusion of blood products as a prognostic
factor for cancer of the head and neck is of less importance and especially does not
mean a worse outcome for surviving.
Furthermore duration of hospitalisation and number of operations were identified
being directly correlated to numbers of transfusions.
Now as before the use of blood products in daily clinical routine should be
considered in a serious way, always taking into account the individual (medical)
patient’s situation.
