gloss of modernity and high rates of growth is essentially an
authoritarian state, curbing and suppressing political and
the basis for open-minded political and social solutions.
Philosophical India
Philosophically speaking, India has long been a leader in
alternate thinking. Ayurveda alternative herbal medicine
is an Indian export to the world. Yoga, the spiritual and
physical guide to well-being through inner peace and meditation
was born and brought up in India, and is possibly its
most famous export to the entire world. The Yoga Sutras
of Patanjali is a foundation text of yoga. It forms part of
the corpus of Sutra literature dating to India’s Mauryan
(321 to 125 BC) period.
In Indian philosophy, yoga (also raja yoga to distinguish it
from later schools) is the name of one of the six orthodox
philosophical schools. Though brief, the Yoga Sutras are
an enormously influential work on yoga philosophy and
practice, held by eminent proponents of yoga such as B.
K. S. Iyengar as being of principal importance:
“Patanjali fills each sutra with his experiential intelligence,
stretching it like a thread (sūtra), and weaving it into a
garland of pearls of wisdom to flavour and savour by those
who love and live in yoga.”
B.K.S. Iyengar, “Light on the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali.”
Samkhya was one of the six orthodox systems (astika,
those systems that recognise Vedic authority) of Hindu
philosophy. The major extant text of this Vedic school
is “Samkhya Karika”, circa 200 CE. This text (in Karika
70) identifies Sankhya as a tantra and its philosophy was
one of the main influences both on the rise of the tantras
as a body of literature, as well as tantra sadhana. There
are no purely Sankhya schools in Hinduism today, but its
influence is felt in the yoga and Vedanta schools. Advaita
Vedanta is considered as the most influential sub-school
of the Vedanta (literally, end or the goal of the Vedas,
Sanskrit) school of Hindu philosophy. Other sub-schools
of Vedanta are Dvaita and Viśishtādvaita. Advaita (literally,
non-duality) is a monistic system of thought. “Advaita”
refers to the identity of the self (atman) and the whole
(Brahman).
