Exodus Mass (1995/96)

In 1995/96 I was invited to a meeting by several conductors and committee members of the regional
Cäcilienverband of Oberfreiamt, at which I was commissioned to write a mass – one that should be as easy to
perform as possible – for choir, congregation, organ and three instruments (either strings or wind). It also had
to be possible to perform it without these three instruments, without the organ part being substantially altered
or made more difficult. The individual liturgical sections were requested by the Cäcilienverband members, as
were the movements in which the congregation was to take part. Silja Walter wrote the texts. At the time she was
utterly fascinated by the idea that the Exodus story from the Old Testament had much in common with the Good
News of the New Testament. She asked me to put this idea into a music as colourful and mystical as possible.
Given the requirements of the commissioning party with regard to the vocal and instrumental aspect, this was
a true challenge. The fact that Silja Walter was satisfied with the end result is proven in that she repeatedly said
during later projects: ‘You know, it should sound roughly like the communion song in the Exodus Mass’.

The experiences of Israel and its salvation on the Exodus from Egypt are
given to God’s people during the Mass as a fulfilment in Christ’s reality.
The people of God experiences in the Kyrie the exodus from captivity of
man as he was, his awakening and his conversion.
The Gloria is a song of redemption for the crossing of the Red Sea, led
by Christ.
The Sanctus sings of the marriage of God with his creation in a new
union in Christ.
The Agnus Dei opens up to us the fulfilment of the paschal feast in the
mystery of the victim on the cross.
Manna and water in the Communion Song are the redemptive signs of
the Eucharistic feast in which we receive Christ.
