Hauptseminar
Mo. 9.15-10.45, AB10012 70203
This class will start with a brief reflection on transculturality and the various levels at which a film can
be characterised as transcultural. After an introduction to film analysis, students will watch various
films by Mira Nair, an Indian-British-American director. The list of films from which we will choose
some for in-depth analysis includes Mississippi Masala (1991), Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996),
Monsoon Wedding (2001), 11'09"01 – September 11 (Episode India, 2002), Vanity Fair (2004), The
Namesake (2006) and Amelia (2009). Students will be expected to watch the films outside class. They
will have to work in groups to prepare the discussion of individual films, focussing on explicit and
implicit transculturality and on the representation of cultural contact and its effects. A Reader with
some basic readings and the films will be made available.
The Opera House in German-Speaking Countries
and North America
Hauptseminar
Mi. 15.30-18.00, O E01 HMT (Am Katharinenstift 8) 70204
German-speaking nations are unique in the world in terms of their serious music culture.
Approximately 80% of all the world's opera performances take place in this region on an annual basis.
Opera came to the United States with European immigration and has now become a cultural fixture in
every urban area of any size. Though performances of opera are less frequent in the United States,
they nonetheless are an economic force in North American civic life.
For this course, graduate and advanced students from all three institutions will conduct short-term
ethnographic research in opera houses in their immediate region under the supervision of faculty
members at each institution. This will consist of visits to the opera houses in question, interviews with
staff and with artists at these institutions and collection of statistical and qualitative data dealing with
the financial operations of the institutions and their relationship to the cities and states in which they
are located, the history of the opera house, physical facilities, administrative structure, financial
relationship to the community, artistic activities, role of artists, and engagement with the public.
The transnational class will be conducted via videoconference. Each group of students from the
participating institutions will present their findings in one unit and discuss the other groups' findings.
The class will be conducted in English. Participants should be interested in field research and in the
transnational comparison of a cultural institution.
