ensemble made up of the city’s Stadtpfeifer or »wait«, its Kunstgeiger<br />
(violinists) and university students. In the other main church, the<br />
second choir, conducted by a prefect, would sing motets, chorales and<br />
sometimes also shorter fi gural pieces. The third choir sang in the New<br />
Church and the fourth – once also described by Bach as »the dross that<br />
understands nothing of music« – in the church of St. Peter. The musical<br />
quality of the latter was not particularly high and its contribution was<br />
usually restricted to simple choral singing.<br />
Over the past two centuries, numerous new choirs have come to enrich<br />
the church music scene in Leipzig, with a number of church choirs and<br />
choral associations, as well as the University Choir.<br />
The Bachfest presents the profusion of liturgical music which has<br />
developed down the ages in Leipzig in its »Musical Services« series.<br />
Once again in this year’s festival, matins, church services and motets<br />
will furnish proof of the rich liturgical repertoire – in which only one<br />
thing you can be sure not to hear is »dross that understands nothing<br />
of music«!<br />
