GEMA-Musikautorenpreis für Henze und Reimann<br />
Two of our composers have been honoured with the<br />
receipt of the coveted German <strong>Music</strong> Authors Award.<br />
The German collecting society GEMA awards this prize<br />
annually in ten categories ’from composers to composers’.<br />
Hans Werner Henze received the award for his<br />
lifetime achievement and Aribert Reimann in the category<br />
opera/lied. Both composers attended the ceremony in<br />
Berlin on 14 April and celebrated their awards in the<br />
company of numerous composers, artists and publishers.<br />
Neue Direktorin am Hindemith Institut<br />
The Hindemith Institut in Frankfurt<br />
introduces its new Director Dr.<br />
Susanne Schaal-Gotthardt. The musicologist,<br />
who has been with the<br />
Institute for many years, was<br />
appointed Director on 1 February<br />
2011. She takes over from Professor<br />
Dr. Giselher Schubert who had held<br />
the post for the previous ten years.<br />
Established in 1974, The Hindemith<br />
Institute is a renowned centre of excellence<br />
devoted to the life and<br />
works of the composer Paul Hindemith<br />
(1895-1963) which also<br />
houses his extensive and valuable<br />
estate. The Institute provides advice<br />
for musicians, concert promoters,<br />
musicologists and students on all<br />
topics relating to Hindemith and<br />
also organises symposiums, concerts<br />
and exhibitions.<br />
Eötvös Total Immersion Day in London<br />
Audiences in London will have the<br />
chance to surround themselves with<br />
the music of Peter Eötvös on 14 May<br />
during the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s<br />
Total Immersion Day. In conjunction<br />
with the Barbican, the day<br />
consists of talks, a film portrait of<br />
the composer and concerts given by<br />
the Guildhall New <strong>Music</strong> Ensemble<br />
and the BBC Symphony Orchestra<br />
conducted by the composer.<br />

Das Frankfurter Hindemith Institut<br />
stellt seine neue Direktorin Dr. Susanne<br />
Schaal-Gotthardt vor. Seit<br />
dem 1. Februar 2011 leitet die Musikwissenschaftlerin<br />
nach langjähriger<br />
Mitarbeit das seit 1974 bestehende<br />
Institut. Sie folgt Professor Dr. Giselher<br />
Schubert, der das Amt zehn Jahre<br />
innehatte.<br />
Das Hindemith Institut ist ein renommiertes<br />
Kompetenzzentrum zu Leben<br />
und Werk des Komponisten Paul<br />
Hindemith (1895-1963) und beherbergt<br />
seinen umfangreichen und<br />
wertvollen Nachlass. Es berät Musiker,<br />
Konzertveranstalter, Wissenschaftler<br />
und Studenten in allen Fragen<br />
zu Hindemith und veranstaltet<br />
Symposien, Konzerte und Ausstellungen.<br />
Am 14. Mai wird das Londoner<br />
Publikum im Barbican Gelegenheit<br />
haben, einen Tag lang in die Musik<br />
von Peter Eötvös einzutauchen: Das<br />
BBC Symphony Orchestra widmet<br />
ihm einen Schwerpunkttag mit Gesprächsrunden,<br />
einem Filmportrait<br />
des Komponisten und Konzerten<br />
des Guildhall New <strong>Music</strong> Ensembles<br />
und des BBC Symphony Orchestra<br />
unter Leitung des Komponisten.<br />
Gleich zwei unserer Komponisten haben in diesem Jahr<br />
einen der begehrten Deutschen Musikautorenpreise erhalten.<br />
Die deutsche Verwertungsgesellschaft GEMA vergibt<br />
diesen Preis „von Komponisten für Komponisten“<br />
alljährlich in zehn Kategorien. Hans Werner Henze erhielt<br />
den Preis für sein Lebenswerk, Aribert Reimann wurde in<br />
der Kategorie „Komposition Oper/Lied“ ausgezeichnet.<br />
Beide Komponisten waren bei der Verleihung am 14.<br />
April in Berlin anwesend und feierten ihre Auszeichnung<br />
mit vielen Komponisten, Künstlern und Verlegern.<br />
Widmann album Elegie on ECM<br />
ECM presents two premiere recordings<br />
this Spring of orchestral works by<br />
Jörg Widmann, featuring his Messe<br />
for large orchestra and the Clarinet<br />
Concerto Elegie, performed by the<br />
composer himself and the Deutsche<br />
Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken-<br />
Kaiserslautern under the direction of<br />
Christoph Poppen. Widmann was the<br />
orchestra’s first composer-in-residence<br />
during the season 2007/08.<br />
The album also includes Widmann’s<br />
Fünf Bruchstücke for clarinet and piano<br />
performed by the composer and<br />
accompanied by Heinz Holliger who<br />
makes his recording début as a pianist<br />
on this album.<br />
MOLA conference<br />
For the first time in its 29 year history,<br />
the Major Orchestra Librarian’s<br />
Association is holding its conference<br />
in London from 13-16 May 2011.<br />
<strong>Schott</strong> is proud to be associated<br />
with the conference and will be<br />
hosting a reception for delegates as<br />
well as providing speakers for panels<br />
covering topics such as digital<br />
rights, commissions and publishing.<br />
Zum ersten Mal in ihrer 29-jährigen<br />
Geschichte wird die Major Orchestra<br />
Librarian Association (MOLA)<br />
ihre Konferenz in London abhalten,<br />
und zwar vom 13. bis 16. Mai 2011.<br />
<strong>Schott</strong> ist zu diesem Anlass Partner,<br />
wird einen Empfang für die Delegierten<br />
ausrichten und Vorträge zu<br />
Themen wie digitale Rechte, Kompositionsaufträge<br />
und Notenausgaben<br />
halten.<br />
Percy Grainger CD-Edition<br />
To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary<br />
of Percy Grainger’s death,<br />
the ‘Grainger Edition’, the most<br />
substantial retrospective collection<br />
of his compositional output with<br />
over 20 hours of music on 19 CDs<br />
has been issued on the Chandos label.<br />
The accompanying 180-page<br />
booklet contains detailed information<br />
on over 100 works and an indepth<br />
account of the Australian<br />
composer’s fascinating biography.<br />
Anlässlich des 50. Todestages von<br />
Percy Grainger ist beim Label Chandos<br />
mit der über 20 Stunden Musik<br />
auf 19 CDs umfassenden „Grainger<br />
Edition“ die größte Retrospektive<br />
seines Schaffens auf Tonträger<br />
erschienen. Im 180 Seiten starken<br />
Begleitheft finden sich ausführliche<br />
Erläuterungen zu weit über 100 Werken<br />
und zum schillernden Leben des<br />
australischen Komponisten.<br />
Mit der Messe für großes Orchester<br />
und dem Klarinettenkonzert Elegie<br />
präsentiert das Label ECM im Frühling<br />
2011 zwei Ersteinspielungen von<br />
Orchesterwerken Jörg Widmanns.<br />
Interpreten sind der Komponist<br />
selbst, der Dirigent Christoph<br />
Poppen und die Deutsche Radio<br />
Philharmonie Saarbrücken-Kaiserslautern,<br />
deren erster Composer in<br />
Residence Widmann in der Spielzeit<br />
2007/08 war. Auf dem Album sind<br />
auch seine Fünf Bruchstücke für<br />
Klarinette und Klavier zu hören.<br />
Widmann wird von Heinz Holliger<br />
begleitet, der damit sein Tonträger-<br />
Debüt als Pianist feiert.<br />
