Editorial · Contents / Inhalt Christiane Krautscheid Schott Music Mainz Dear reader, As a child, I would have loved to have learned the cello, but my parents decided that a sound musical education should begin with the piano – the cello could come later. My passion for the keyboard however was never properly ignited and was extinguished for ever when I heard the incomparable tone of the great Gregor Piatigorsky. And unfortunately, I never learned the cello. This has only served to increase my anticipation of all new works composed for my favourite instrument – currently Peter Eötvös’ Cello Concerto Grosso, which will receive its first performance by Miklós Perényi and the Berlin Philharmonic. This distinguished première has prompted us to devote our current issue to new concert repertoire for cello. Many exciting concertos have been created across the world during the last decade including works by Krzysztof Penderecki, Rodion Shchedrin, Toshio Hosokawa and Xiaogang Ye. Wagner ante portas: For the last 150 years Schott Music has been recognised as Wagner’s primary publisher. Richard Wagner entrusted his major operas including Der Ring des Nibelungen and Parsifal to the publishers Franz Schott and Ludwig Strecker. Schott Music is now bringing out the definitive Richard Wagner Complete Edition; five operas are already available and by 2012 the urtext piano reductions and complete performance material will be obtainable for Wagner’s ten canonical stage works. A stage work will also be the focus of our attention at the beginning of May: Toshio Hosokawa has completed his third opera which is entitled Matsukaze. We are eager to discover how the director Sasha Waltz will produce this work at the Opera House La Monnaie in Brussels. At the premiere of Matsukaze, we will also be reunited with our Japanese colleagues from Tokyo who have been closely involved with the creation of this opera and undertaken responsibility for the production of the musical material. We are greatly relieved to know that all our Schott colleagues and their families are safe. Our thoughts remain with them and it is our sincere hope that their country will recover as quickly as possible from its terrible stroke of fate which has irrevocably changed the world for ever. Aber meine Eltern fanden, eine solide Ausbildung beginne nun einmal mit dem Klavier – das Cello könne später kommen. Meine Leidenschaft für die Tasten blieb bescheiden und sank auf den Nullpunkt, als ich den Klang des unvergleichlichen Gregor Piatigorsky hörte. Doch das Cello kam nie. Umso gespannter erwarte ich heute jedes neue Stück für mein Lieblingsinstrument – wie jetzt Peter Eötvös’ Cello Concerto Grosso, das Miklós Perényi und die Berliner Philharmoniker aus der Taufe heben werden. Diese prominente Uraufführung gibt uns Anlass, Ihnen als Schwerpunkt unseres aktuellen Heftes neue Konzert - literatur für das Cello vorzustellen. Rund um den Globus entstanden in den letzten zehn Jahren viele spannende Konzerte, darunter Werke von Krzysztof Penderecki, Rodion Shchedrin, Toshio Hosokawa und Xiaogang Ye. Wagner ante portas: Seit 150 Jahren gilt Schott Music als der Wagner-Verlag schlechthin. Mit Recht, schließlich übergab Richard Wagner seine wichtigsten Opern, darunter auch Der Ring des Nibelungen und Parsifal, den damaligen Verlegern Franz Schott und Ludwig Strecker. Heute erscheint bei Schott Music die wissenschaftlichkritische Richard-Wagner-Gesamtausgabe. Nun legen wir die Klavierauszüge der großen Opern nach der Gesamtausgabe vor; fünf Opern sind bereits verfügbar, bis zum Jahr 2012 werden von jedem der zehn kanonischen Bühnenwerke der Klavierauszug im Urtext sowie das vollständige Aufführungsmaterial erhältlich sein. Ein Bühnenwerk beschäftigt uns auch Anfang Mai: Mit Matsukaze legt Toshio Hosokawa seine dritte Oper vor. Wir sind gespannt, wie Regisseurin Sasha Waltz das Stück auf die Bühne der Brüsseler Oper La Monnaie bringen wird. Bei der Uraufführung von Matsukaze werden wir unsere japanischen Kollegen aus Tokio wiedersehen, die die Entstehung dieser Oper aus nächster Nähe begleitet und die Notenherstellung besorgt haben. Wir sind unendlich froh zu wissen, dass alle Kollegen von Schott Japan mit ihren Familien wohlauf sind. In dieser Zeit sind wir in unseren Gedanken bei ihnen und wünschen ihnen von Herzen, dass sich ihr Land so rasch wie möglich von dem Schicksalsschlag, nach dem die Welt nicht mehr dieselbe ist, erholen möge.
