dio speakers, and with one swift movement, Lennart
was in my arms, his feet tapping the floor beneath
him to the beat, while I sang along with GaGa as
loud as I could.
Mein neues blaues Auto.
After an hour of eating and dancing, I helped Lennart
prepare himself for school. He picked out a
classy striped shirt and jeans, paired with
his genuine motorcycle jacket. And just
like every day, Lennart chose a different
toy car to bring with him to school. Of
course, he picked his newest blue sports
car. I said good bye, placed the car on his
lap, and gave him a big kiss on the cheek.
„Tschüß, Annamarie. Bis später“, he
announces as he heads out the door.
Ich bin sauer! Ich möchte kämpfen.
Ich mache Kampfsport.
„Was meinst du, Lennart?” I asked.
He came home from school at 14:00, his
brow wrinkled and his mouth in an angry
pout. „Meine Lehrerin. Sie hat mein
Auto in meinen Rucksack gelegt.“ This
particular day at school, Lennart had a
different teacher than usual, and she took
Lennart’s car and put it into his backpack.
Lennart typically holds his car in his hand
throughout the entire school day; but today,
the teacher did the unimaginable.
„Ich möchte ihre Mutter anrufen“, he
demanded. I laughed, as did Lennart, and
eventually, the problem was solved as we
practiced our martial arts moves in the
kitchen.
Ich möchte acht Vanille mit Erdbeeren. Bitte.
Lennart pointed to the Obstgarten Joghurt on
the shelf in the grocery store. “Really?” I asked.
“That’s a lot!” „Zehn“, Lennart replied. „ZEHN?
Okay…”. I picked up ten vanilla and strawberry
joghurts and added them into our shopping cart,
already full of Gummibärchen, Kinder Überraschungseier
and Monte.
Annamarie, was ist 100 plus 100?
„Weiß ich nicht, Lennart. Das ist sehr schwierig.”
His mother, Britta, and I, sat with him at the
table during eating Kekse and drinking coffee, over
his Math books. Practicing both Reading and Math
was a daily after school routine, and from time to
time, Lennart was the teacher and asked me questions!
This time, I was stumped. Lennart looked at
me with a twinkle in his eye, and eagerly turned to
the Number section on his „Talker” and answered
proudly: „200“. “Ohhhh! I didn’t know that!”
I exclaimed. After my response, he took a sip of his
Apfel juice, and moved onto the next problem.
Bleibst du da?
Lennart, supported by his Physio Doctor, knelt
against a table with a massive red ball clenched in
between his hands. We were at Lennart’s hour long
27
physical therapy session. I was on the other side
of a large ramp that began where Lennart knelt,
and ends where I stood, behind a huge tower built
with massive cushion blocks. „Du bleibst da!“
Lennart ordered. With a swift push, the red ball
tumbled down the ramp, smacking the block tower,
and causing its pieces to crash right on top of me. I
shrieked and Lennart laughed. And with that, we
did it again, and again, and again.
Annamarie, ich habe Hunger!
I raced into the living room where Lennart
was watching his favorite cartoons.
He lowered the volume with his „Talker”
and looked at me. I asked him what
he wanted, and he answered happily,
„Pfannkuchen mit Nutella und Zucker.
Mama ist nicht hier.“ It was our
movie fun night while Lennart’s mother
and father went out for the evening.
Pfannkuchen mit Nutella was our favorite
Abendessen.
Gute Nacht, Annamarie. Tanzst
du heute Abend?
After we brushed our teeth and got into
our most comfortable pajamas, I snuggled
up with Lennart and read a story.
Once the last page was turned, Lennart
gave me a hug and said, „Gute Nacht,
Annamarie“. I wished him good night,
but before he left me to go into bed, he
asked, „Tanzst du heute Abend“? I
laughed and nodded my head.
As Leannart’s former au-pair, I have had the opportunity
to learn and grow with him each day for
ten months. His EcoTalker allowed us to communicate
from morning until night. His personality
shone through his words, and together, we shared
both happy moments and sad ones. Because of
Prentke Romich, Lennart has been able to use his
voice to make an impact in the world. Because of
his infinite joy and love for life, I feel that I have
changed and grown even more than he.
