Africa and the Global Financial Crisis – Impact on
Economic Reform Processes
In volume XV of the African Development Perspectives Yearbook,
the Research Group on African Development Perspectives
investigates the impact of the GFC on economic reform processes
in Africa. The analysis is structured in such a way so as to reflect
the opportunities and dangers of policy reversals in the face of
the GFC. The impact of the crisis on different types and forms
of governance in the region is considered. The first question is
therefore which macro-economic policy instruments have to be
applied in order to overcome the crisis and to continue with sustainable
development. The second question is how the GFC has
affected Africa’s external economic relations and if the path of
opening up to the world markets is continued. The third question
raised is how the crisis has affected social cohesion, impacted on
poverty alleviation strategies and the achievement of Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs). All these questions are discussed
in the various contributions which comprise general studies and
country case studies. The authors also looked into the role of international
financial institutions during and after the crisis. The
volume XV of the African Development Perspectives Yearbook
is structured into three Units. Unit 1 addresses general issues
regarding the impact of the GFC on reform processes in Africa.
Unit 2 presents case studies from countries and sub-regions. Unit
3 presents reviews and book notes of current literature focussing
on issues of African development perspectives.
Risk and Africa
Multi-Disciplinary Empirical Approaches
Through a range of varied articles this book explores the changing
nature of risk in contemporary African societies. It provides
a valuable addition to current debate on the concept of risk which
has traditionally been skewed in favour of European historical
experience. The articles illustrate that technological hazards,
pollution and climate change as well as the introduction of new
forms of insurance and the restructuring of civil society are just
some of the recent developments that invite us to be sceptical of
prevailing notions of risk in the African context. The reader is
encouraged to move away from focusing on the vulnerability of
Africa as a pre-modern society to consider more localised and
contemporary perspectives of risk. In exploring new ways of conceptualising
risk in Africa the book addresses the challenge of
making theoretical and methodological advances in risk research
relevant to understanding the processes of social change on the
continent.
African Children at Work
Working and Learning in Growing Up for Life
Most children in Africa start working from a very early age – helping
the family or earning wages. Should this work be abolished,
tolerated, or encouraged? Such questions are the subject of much
debate: international and national organizations, employers, parents,
and children often have diverse opinions and put pressure
in different directions. The authors of this book contribute to the
Entwicklungssoziologie
discussion through intensive fieldwork and careful analysis of
children’s activities. They consider childhood and family, work
and play, work in rural and urban contexts, paths to learning,
work and school, and children’s rights.
Handbook of Micro Health Insurance in Africa
Universal social protection in health is a main challenge for most
countries in sub-Saharan Africa. This Handbook of Micro Health
Insurance in Africa focuses on the relatively new and promising
approach of micro health insurance as a tool between market,
self-help, and state, aiming to reduce poverty, to combat social
exclusion and to improve access to health care for low-income
households. This volume introduces the general context, common
types and current state of micro health insurance and provides
deeper insights into the implementation of micro health insurance
in sub-Saharan Africa.
Christianity in Indonesia
Perspectives of Power
Indonesia is a multicultural and multireligious nation whose heterogeneity
is codified in the state doctrine, the Pancasila. Yet
the relations between the various social, ethnic, and religious
groups have been problematic down to the present day. In several
respects, Christians have a precarious role in the struggle for shaping
the nation. In the aftermath of the former president Suharto’s
resignation and in the course of the ensuing political changes
Christians have been involved both as victims and perpetrators
in violent regional clashes with Muslims that claimed thousands
of lives. Since the beginning of the new millennium the violent
conflicts have lessened, yet the pressure exerted on Christians
by Islamic fundamentalists still continues undiminished in the
Muslim-majority regions. The future of the Christians in Indonesia
remains uncertain, and pluralist society is still on trial. For
this reason the situation of Christians in Indonesia is an important
–14–
issue that goes far beyond research on a minority, touching on
general issues relating to the formation of the nation-state.
Redefining public space in Hanoi
Places, practices and meaning
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is known for its bustling street life.
Public spaces, such as streets and sidewalks, are appropriated by
citizens mostly for small-scale economic activities. Green parks
are privatised in order to cater to the growing demand for leisure
space. At the same time, official spaces like Ba Dinh Square or
Ly Thai To Square are occupied by Hanoi’s residents for sports
and gatherings. The book takes a close look at the practices and
meaning of public spaces and the development of public spheres
in Hanoi.
