An underwater paradise
norkelling, diving, unwinding: the Maldives
are a dream destination for fans of underwater
landscapes that are rich in marine life. Of
the almost 1,200 islands in total, around 90 –
alongside the capital Malé – are accessible to tourists.
With their palm and breadfruit trees, dazzlingly white
beaches and coral reefs, they are a beautiful sight to
behold. What a paradise! The water temperature is fairly
constant at between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius. Those
diving off the western shores of the atolls between May
and November could well encounter rays or sharks. The
corals in the protected waters between the atolls, on the
other hand, are home to many different species of fish.
Islands with a good local reef are best for snorkellers; the
underwater paradise is then accessible directly from the
beach. •
