Real*Utopia
Sex, crime and art?
Griesplatz and Griesgasse – this
was an area that was to be avoided by
young people on their way home at
night. At least that’s what they had to
promise their parents. Some of the
residents of Graz still view Gries as a
“blue-collar district” and as a breeding
ground for “sex, crime and alcohol”
– as the Styrian Reeperbahn or
the St. Pauli of Graz.
Well, first of all, it’s not half as bad
as it is made out to be and secondly, it
has openly lived with a tainted reputation.
Thirdly, “slowly but surely the
opinion is gaining acceptance that
Graz wouldn’t be a real city without
Gries,” according to Anton Lederer
(), who, together with Margarethe
Makovec, came up with the idea
to take a closer look at the district of
Gries – and its possible future – in an
artistic way. The Austro-Chinese artist
Jun Yang will install a Chinese
archway which symbolizes the entrance
to a (fictitious or future) “China
Town Graz”. The “Space Bedouin” is a
human figure on which lavish embroidery
is applied, suras from the Koran,
peaceful messages which the cosmonaut
took with him on his journey
through space. Devout “objectors to
water” will feel at home at the “Club
of Non-swimmers” which invites visitors
to sunbathe, but not to swim.
The best starting point for tours to
these and other works of art is Griesplatz.
The “real*utopia” information
center where visitors can obtain a
reference map and rent bicycles is
located north of the square.
blick in die zukunft
Im Bezirk Gries ist viel zu entdecken. Kunst setzt Zeichen.
Der Griesplatz und die Griesgasse
– das war so eine Gegend,
die man als Jugendlicher auf
dem nächtlichen Nachhauseweg meiden
sollte. Zumindest musste man das
den Eltern versprechen. Teile der Grazer
Bevölkerung sehen den Gries nach
wie vor als „Arbeiterbezirk“ und als
Brutstätte für „Sex, Crime und Alkohol“
– als steirische Reeperbahn oder
das St. Pauli von
Graz.
Naja, erstens
stimmt das längst
nicht mehr und
zweitens lebt es
sich mit ruiniertem
Ruf bekanntlich
ungeniert. Und drittens „setzt sich
langsam aber sicher die Meinung
durch, dass Graz ohne den Gries gar
keine richtige Stadt wäre”, so Anton
Lederer (< rotor >), der gemeinsam mit
Margarethe Makovec die Idee hatte,
sich mit dem Bezirk Gries – und dessen
möglicher Zukunft – auf künstlerische
Art und Weise auseinander zu setzen.
Das Projekt „real*utopia“ erzeugt Utopien
für den wohl internationalsten
Stadtteil von Graz.
Konkret handelt es
sich dabei um 15
Kunstwerke von
heimischen und
internationalen
KünstlerInnen, die
zur „realen“ Umgebung
des Bezirks Bezug nehmen. So
wird der austro-chinesische Künstler
Jun Yang einen chinesischen Torbogen
auf der Grünfläche zwischen Karlauerund
Schönaugürtel installieren, der die
