Auf Reisen liebe ich es, scheinbar
anachronistische Utensilien zu
verwenden. Also Dinge, die etwas
altmodisch erscheinen, aber weit schöner sind
als die zeitgenössische Mainstream-Alternative.
Und manchmal auch nützlicher.
Gepäck hat heute z. B. Rollen, was im Fall von
großen Koffern sehr kraftsparend ist. Beim
Bordgepäck bevorzuge ich Taschen ohne Räder
aus altmodischen Materialien wie Leder oder
Canvas. Ballistic Nylon ist zwar äußerst stabil
und abwaschbar, es entwickelt aber keine
Patina. Im Gegensatz zu der kleinen Tasche aus
Segeltuch mit Ecken und Griffen aus Sattelleder,
die ich vor über einer Dekade in England
gekauft habe. Man sieht ihr diese Jahre an,
was mich aber nicht stört. Ich habe schließlich
auch Falten bekommen.
Die nicht vorhandenen Rollen sind übrigens das
perfekte Korrektiv beim Packen. Da ich die
Tasche trage, überlade ich sie nie. In ihr steckt
immer ein Paar Galoschen, also Überschuhe
aus Naturkautschuk. Sie verwandeln Schuhe
mit Ledersohlen mit wenigen Handgriffen
in regenfeste und absolut rutschsichere
Reisetreter. Was kommt noch mit? Ein absolut
zuversichtliches Tool zur Navigation, das auch
offline und ohne Netz bestens funktioniert.
Ältere Leser kennen es noch, es nennt sich
Stadtplan. Da kringele ich mit einem Stift mein
Hotel und alle anderen Ziele ein. Sehr hilfreich,

Luggage, for example, always has wheels
nowadays. On large suitcases, this saves
travellers a huge amount of effort. When it
comes to on-board luggage, however, I
prefer bags without wheels, and made from
old-fashioned materials like leather or
canvas. Ballistic nylon may be sturdy and
washable, but it doesn’t develop a patina,
unlike the small canvas case with leather
corners and handles I bought in England over
a decade ago. You can see every moment of
that use in it, but I don’t mind that one bit: I,
too, have acquired the odd wrinkle as time
has passed.
I also find the fact that it doesn’t have
wheels the perfect corrective when packing;
since I’ve got to carry rather than pull the
thing, I never overload it. My case always
contains a pair of galoshes, overshoes made
of natural rubber. These transform shoes
with leather soles and few grips into shoes
that are not merely rainproof but also
non-slip. What else do I take? A 100%
dependable navigational tool, which works
like a dream offline and without a
connection, and some older readers may
