Frankish incursions around AD 275.In its heyday the Roman
vicus extended over an area of around 80 hectares from
the Tempelstraße in the north to the Fritz-Schäffer-Straße
in the south and between the Rhine to the east and the
railway to the west. It was only a little smaller than the Roman
province’s capital Cologne, but larger than the Colonia Ulpia
Traiana in Xanten. It may even have been regularly planned
similar to a cadastral survey. Regularly one can detect plots
set at right-angles to the streets often up to 100 metres long
and 15 metres wide. Another street, some 13 metres wide,
which also branched off the Limes road at a right-angle,
accessed the eastern part of the natural elevation near the
river-bank 8 (2). Further south, at a safe distance from the
domestic area, were located the inflammable workshops of
the glass- and metal-workers, as well as the manufacturing
plants for producing bricks and pottery with their working
and storage sites covering a large area. //
