WASTEWATER DISPOSAL<br />
Together with the rainwater off the roofs the wastewater from the bath-house flowed through a system of pipes and channels<br />
running 26 + 27 outside the main building directly to the latrine building (latrina) lying to the northeast. There the water was<br />
utilised to flush and clean a drain laid out at right-angles 25. Originally, there were seats with keyhole-shaped openings set<br />
above the drain.<br />
It was not necessarily the case that one went to the toilet alone, instead, as in this case, up to at least seven persons could<br />
use this room simultaneously, during which time one would unabashed have a chat with one’s neighbours. The immediate<br />
location of the latrines at a crossroads and their proximity to the baths’ entrance indicate a use as public toilets (forica) easily<br />
accessible from the street. In the latrines’ northern corner the effluents flowed through a vent in the exterior wall and via a<br />
street-sewer down into the nearby Rhine. //
