Dear Reader,
Editorial Editorial
Welcome to the fourth edition of the M2M journal. The signs are
still pointing to growth in the M2M market. Contrary to the general
trend, the M2M market grew in 2009, in fact by around 23% to
$10 billion, according to calculations by Beecham Research. We
expect that the industry will continue this trend with increased
vitality this year and in the following years.
We have dedicated this issue to a topic that is continually hotly
discussed and personally relevant to each of us, health. Against
the backdrop of an aging population, increasing cases of chronic
diseases and steadily increasing costs for health, society is
facing enormous challenges. In the U.S. alone, health spending
in 2009 amounted to 2 trillion $, according to expert estimates.
In Germany this amounted to € 263 million, approximately 10.5%
of Germany's GDP.
eHealth solutions, including the examples presented in this
journal, recover a substantial savings of several billion Euros,
according to a study conducted on behalf of the EU Commission.
What is crucial is that such technologies provide sick people and
their relatives with greater mobility and comfort, and even save
lives in case of an emergency. Therefore, decision makers should
give priority to conditions for rapid and wide application of this
technology.
We hope you enjoy reading.
Eine Alternative zu den sehr aufwändigen
Überwachungssystem.
A satellite-aided monitoring system
developed in Bremen offers an alternative
to high-cost scanning methods
for international containers.
betroffenen Containerterminals.
6 M2M Journal 04 | 06/10
Das Scanning der Container führt nicht nur
zu deutlich höheren Transportkosten, sondern
beansprucht einen nicht gerade unbedeutenden
Platz auf den ohnehin schon
räumlich begrenzten Terminals. Hinzu
kommen zusätzliche Containerbewegungen
im Terminal selbst.
Eine Alternative zu den sehr aufwändigen
Scanning-Verfahren bietet das von der Astrium
in Bremen entwickelte, satellitengestützte
Überwachungssystem von Seecontainern,
SeCureSystem.
Überwachung in Echtzeit
Kosten realisieren.
Ein Novum dieser satellitenbasierten Lösung
stellt ein auf elektronischen Zertifikaten
basierendes Sicherheitskonzept
dar, mit dessen Hilfe zwischen autorisierten
und nicht autorisierten Öffnungen
des Containers unterschieden werden
kann. Hierdurch wird nicht nur eine geringstmögliche
Fehlalarmquote, sondern
auch noch umfassende Sicherheit für die
transportbegleitenden Daten- und Dokumentenverkehre
gewährleistet. Durch das
personalisierte Sicherheitskonzept lassen
sich auch Kosteneinsparungen durch
die Automatisierung in der Erstellung und
Weiterleitung sämtlicher Frachtdokumente
erreichen.
Neben diesen Mehrwertdiensten unterstützt
SeCureSystem durch die hohe
Authentizität der Daten und durch seine
weltweite Echtzeitfähigkeit im besonderen
Maße interaktives und prozessübergreifendes
Supply Chain Management.
Auf die gleiche Weise lassen sich aber
auch Warenwerte durch den Einsatz entsprechender
Sensoren überwachen.
Zusammen mit den Partnerunternehmen
aus der Logistikbranche Eurogate und
Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, hat Astrium
in den letzten fünf Jahren das komplette
System in umfangreichen transatlantischen
Testverkehren erprobt. Die
Entwicklungsarbeiten sind abgeschlossen
und das System befindet sich seit Januar
2010 im kommerziellen Betrieb.
Produkte und Entwicklungen Products and Developments
Starting in 2014, the U.S. will require complete
scanning of all shipping containers
to the U.S., namely at the last port prior
to entering US territory. Scanning or performing
X-rays on the containers with the
purpose of detecting possible explosives
or weapons at an early stage, in order to
prevent terrorist attacks in the U.S. for example,
would have huge implications on
the national export industry and all affected
container terminals.
The scanning of containers not only leads
to significantly higher transportation
costs, but demands a fair amount of space
at the already crowded terminals. Added to
this is the moving of the containers within
the terminal itself.
SeCureSystem, a satellite-aided monitoring
system developed by Astrium in
Bremen, offers an alternative to high-cost
scanning methods for sea containers.
Real-time monitoring
With this system, containers are globally
monitored with appropriate sensors in
real-time around the clock. Sensor data
is transmitted without additional ground
equipment or complex server networks via
satellite radio links to a trust center, where
the data is evaluated, anomalies are detected
and forwarded to customers or to
In Bremerhaven werden jährlich rund 600.000 Container Richtung USA verschifft.
In Bremerhaven about 600,000 containers are shipped to the USA annually.
the security authorities. In this way, unauthorized
access, or any other intrusion into
the container interior can be identified in
real time.
This information represents a substantial
improvement of existing procedures for the
identification of hazardous containers. If
unauthorized openings are detected, the
identified container can be selectively put
through an inspection by scanning equipment.
With the interaction of these two security
technologies, the proportion of containers
to be inspected can be reduced to
a minimum. This way a much higher level
of security can be realized at significantly
lower costs.
A security concept based on electronic certificates
is a first for this satellite-based
solution which helps distinguish between
authorized and unauthorized openings
of a container. This provides not only the
lowest possible rate of false alarms, but
comprehensive security for transport-related
data and document traffic is also guaranteed.
With this personalized security
concept, cost savings can also be achieved
through the automated creation and transmission
of all freight documents.
In addition to these value added services,
SeCureSystem particularly supports interactive
cross-process supply chain management
through the high authenticity
of data and through its global real-time
capability.
In the same way the value of the goods can
also be monitored by using appropriate
sensors.
Over the past five years Astrium has tested
the entire system in extensive trans-Atlantic
test traffic together with partner companies
in the logistics industry Eurogate and
Hellmann Worldwide Logistics. The development
work has been completed and the
system has been in commercial operation
since January 2010.
13,56 MHz Antenne angeschlossen, welche
man mit dem PCB realisieren kann.
Die 64 Speicherblöcke können einzeln
Geräte zum Einsatz, wie EKG, Blutzuckermessgeräte
oder Analysegeräte. Sie senden
ihre Messdaten an eine Basisstation
Zudem ermöglichen solche Geräte mit
einer Akku-Pufferung auch den mobilen
Einsatz, so dass ein lückenloser Informationsaustausch
auch bei Reisen gewährleistet
ist. Das Telit GE865 benötigt mit nur
22 x 22 mm in BGA-Bauweise den geringsten
Platzbedarf auf einer Platine. Dank
modernster Singlechip GPRS Architektur
im Inneren ist die Leistungsaufnahme optimiert
für mobile Geräte.
In Altersheimen teilen sich oftmals viele
Patienten dieselben Geräte, was eine Benutzeridentifikation
erfordert. Eine manuelle
Identifikation birgt zu viele Fehler, biometrische
Verfahren sind kostspielig und
rechenintensiv. Der elektrische Ausweis
mit RFID ist zuverlässig, günstig und dank
modulare Leseeinheiten einfach in bestehende
Applikationen zu implementieren.
Eine Identifizierung über die integrierte
Unique-ID lässt sich nicht manipulieren.
Die Erfahrung des Wireless Competence
Center der Rutronik Elektronische Bauelemente
GmbH im medizinischen Umfeld
zeigt: Die Geräte sollen ohne Bedieneingriffe
des Patienten auskommen, die Batterielaufzeit
soll mindestens ein halbes
Jahr umfassen und akkugestützte Geräte
eine Woche ohne Netzanschluss funktionieren.
Unterschiede bestehen jedoch in
der Kompatibilitätsstrategie: Einige Hersteller
möchten nicht, dass ihre Produkte
mit Marktbegleitern kommunizieren und
setzen auf hauseigene Protokolle oder verschlüsselte
Standards. Bluetooth Nutzer
werden hingegen künftig auf den neuen
„Bluetooth low energy technology“ Standard
wechseln, der ihre Anforderungen
gezielter abdeckt.
The power supply of the medical equipment
varies depending on the measuring
system and area of application, and the
wireless interface must have an accordingly
low current consumption. In a passive
wireless transmission for example the microcontroller
connects via I²C interface to
kbit memory chip is connected directly
to a 13.56 MHz antenna; this can be
carried out by the PCB. The 64 memory
blocks can be protected individually
against RFID write or read access.
The microcontroller writes the measurement
data into the EEPROM, from which
they can be accessed by an RFID handheld.
RFID is useful when a small amount of data
is to be transmitted on demand and the
radio link does not exceed a few centimeters.
The new nRF8001 at Nordic Semiconductor
becomes an option if a device has
to bridge distances of a few meters or independently
initiate the data transfer and
still get by with a button cell battery. The
2.4 GHz transceiver chip supports the new
"Bluetooth low energy technology" standard
and only requires a few µA average
current in its connected state.
Mobile base stations combine data
loggers and gateways
Often multiple devices are used to monitor
the health of a patient, such as ECG, blood
glucose monitors or analysis devices. They
send their data to a base station in the
patient's home or directly via GPRS to an
internet server. Since the operating costs
of GPRS are now lower than when using
ISDN, GPRS is used more and more as a
data collector. Moreover, devices with battery
buffering allow mobile use, so that an
exchange of information without interruption
is assured even when travelling. The
Telit GE865 requires only a 22 x 22 mm in
BGA construction, thus being the smallest
footprint on a PCB. The power consump tion
is optimized for mobile devices, thanks to
the latest single-chip GPRS architecture
inside.
In nursing homes, many patients often
share the same equipment, therefore re-
quiring a user ID. Manual identification entails
too many errors; biometric methods
are expensive and computer intensive. The
electronic ID card with RFID is reliable, inexpensive
and thanks to modular reading
units, easy to integrate into existing applications.
Identification via the integrated
unique ID cannot be manipulated.
The experience of the Wireless Competence
Center at Rutronik Electronic Components
GmbH in the medical field shows
the following: devices should be operable
without intervention of the patient; battery
life should last at least six months, and the
power supply of devices using rechargeable
batteries should function for a week
without being connected to the main power
supply. Nevertheless, there are differences
in the compatibility strategy. Some
manufacturers do not want their products
to communicate with market competitors
but rather to rely on their own protocols or
encoded standards. Bluetooth users will
however continue to change over to the
new "Bluetooth low energy technology"
standard, which specifically covers their
needs.
TeleMonitoring verbessert die Prävention
Telemonitoring Improves Prevention
Mit einer geeigneten Infrastruktur können älter werdende und pflegebedürftige Menschen
weiter in ihrer gewohnten häuslichen Umgebung leben. TeleMonitoring schafft
dafür die notwendigen technischen Voraussetzungen. Wichtig ist dabei eine enge Verzahnung
der Technik mit den pflegerischen und medizinischen Strukturen.
With the appropriate infrastructure, seniors and people in need of care can con tinue
to live in their familiar home environment. Telemonitoring creates the necessary
technical conditions for this. In doing so, what is important for this is a close integration
of technology with nursing and medical structures.
Die Träger von Wohnbauprojekten oder Pflegeorganisationen
können durch den Einsatz
von TeleMonitoring-Systemen die Betreuung
von Senioren und chronisch kranken
Menschen erheblich verbessern, die Leistungen
effizienter gestalten und Kosten reduzieren.
Der Einsatz einer Vielzahl solcher
Systeme ist allerdings eine nicht zu unterschätzende
organisatorische Herausforderung.
Allein mit der Auswahl der geeigneten
Hard- und Software ist es nicht getan.
Für den erfolgreichen Einsatz von TeleMonitoring
müssen nach den Erfahrungen
von Health Insight Solutions GmbH vor allem
drei Voraussetzungen erfüllt werden:
Akzeptanz bei Patienten
und Senioren
Wichtig für eine erfolgreiche Implementierung
einer TeleMonitoring-Lösung sind
Benutzerfreundlichkeit, nachvollziehbare
Applikationen und der Schutz personenbezogener
Daten. Dabei ist die kabellose
Anbindung von einfach zu bedienenden
Messgeräten ein wichtiger Akzeptanzfaktor
(Abbildung 1). Zusätzlich sollen die
Systeme den Alltag der Senioren im gewohnten
Lebensumfeld erleichtern und
das Sicherheitsgefühl erhöhen.
10 M2M Journal 04 | 06/10
Akzeptanz beim Betreuungspersonal
und bei Ärzten
TeleMonitoring wird umso schneller von
Pflegekräften, Ärzten, etc. als Unterstützung
akzeptiert, je eher sie Arbeitserleichterungen
oder Therapieverbesserungen
erkennen. Zusätzlich sollte eine frühzeitige
Einbindung des Pflegepersonals bei der
Einführung von TeleMonitoring erfolgen.
Dr. Christian Pohl, Produktmanagement
bei Health Insight Solutions, unterscheidet
zwischen TeleMonitoring und TeleMedizin:
„Es geht darum, Daten für die Prävention
zu gewinnen, die dann vom Arzt nachvollzogen
werden. Der Arzt soll dadurch nicht
ersetzt werden. Hinzu kommt, dass sich
eine erfolgreiche Lösung immer an den
vorhandenen Pflege- und Betreuungsprozessen
orientieren muss.“
Integration in medizinische
und pflegerische Abläufe
Es ist entscheidend, dass die Rollen und
Rechte der Beteiligten klar definiert sind.
So sollte exakt festgelegt werden, wer
welche Daten sehen und wer welche Reaktionen
auslösen soll. Wird z.B. ein Alarm
ausgelöst, müssen die Reaktionswege
definiert und in normale Abläufe integriert
sein. Die rollenorientierten Anwendungen
sollen einfach und an einem Tag trainierbar
sein.
Das Monitoring-System von
Health Insight Solutions (HIS)
Das HIS Portal ist ein webbasiertes Portal,
das personenbezogene Informationen und
einlaufende Monitoringdaten verwaltet
und auswertet (Abbildung 2). Grenzwerte
sind individuell einstellbar und Benachrichtigungen
können automatisch via E-
Mail oder SMS verschickt werden.
Die HIS Central Unit ist ein geschlossenes,
passives System ohne jegliche Bedienführung
zum Empfang der Daten von drahtlosen
Sensoren wie Blutdruck, Sauerstoffsättigung
oder Gewicht über die Bluetooth
Technik. Der Versand der Daten geschieht
via GPRS, DSL oder Telefon.
Geeignete Alarmsensoren, Umgebungssensoren
und Vitalsensoren verschiedener
Hersteller werden individuell für
bestimmte Krankheits- und Risikobilder
zusammengestellt und übertragen ihre
Messdaten via Bluetooth an die Central
Unit.
Per Mobil Option können verschiedene
Notrufsysteme integriert werden (z.B. als
Notrufhandy oder als Notrufknopf mit der
Möglichkeit der metergenauen Personenortung).
organizational challenge. It is not just
done with a selection of appropriate hardware
and software alone.
According to the experience of Insight
Health Solutions GmbH, three conditions
must be met for the successful use of telemonitoring:
Acceptance by patients
and seniors
User-friendliness, comprehensible applications
and the protection of personal data are
important for the successful implementation
of a telemonitoring solution. In this way the
wireless connection of easy-to-use measuring
instruments is an important acceptability
factor (Figure 1). In addition, the systems
should facilitate everyday living for seniors
in their familiar living environments along
with increasing their sense of security.
Acceptance by caregivers
and physicians
Telemonitoring is accepted as a support all
the more quickly by nurses, doctors, and
others, once they recognize the reduced
workload or improvements in treatment. In
addition, the involvement of nursing staff
in the implementation of telemonitoring
should take place at an early stage. Dr.
Christian Pohl, with Product Management
at Insight Health Solutions, distinguishes
© Health Insight Solutions GmbH 2008
between telemonitoring and telemedicine:
"The point is to collect data for prevention,
which is then followed up by a physician.
This is not meant to replace the physi cian.
In addition, a successful solution must
always refer to existing care and support
processes."
Integration into medical
and nursing procedures
It is essential that the roles and rights of
the parties involved are clearly defined. It
should be precisely determined who can
see what data and who should be prompted
by which reactions. If, for example, an
alarm is triggered, the course of action
must be defined and be integrated into
normal operations. The role-oriented applications
should be simple and teach able
in one day.
The monitoring system from
HIS Portal is a web-based portal that monitors
and evaluates personal information
and manages incoming data (Figure 2).
Limits are individually adjustable and notifications
Figure 2: TeleMonitoring is successfully applicable medically,
technically and commercially. The monitoring system from
Health Insight Solutions (HIS) of Munich consists of the HIS
portal, the HIS central unit and individual sensors.
The HIS central unit is a closed, passive
system without a user interface of any kind.
It is used for receiving data such as blood
pressure, oxygen saturation, or weight via
Bluetooth technology from wireless sensors.
Data transmission takes place via
GPRS, DSL or telephone.
The appropriate alarm sensors, environmental
sensors and vital sensors from different
manufacturers are individually assembled
for specific disease patterns and
risk profiles, and they transfer their data
via Bluetooth to the central unit.
Various alarm systems can be integrated
via a mobile option (e.g. as an emergency
phone or as an emergency call button capable
of personal location accurate to the
nearest meter).
In many countries, an aging population
and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle
will likely lead to a huge increase in the
number of long-term patients with one or
more chronic diseases. At the same time,
demands on health-care systems have
increased to the point where the delivery
and cost of medical treatment has become
a critical global issue. Transforming the
treatment and management of chronic
diseases will be key to controlling costs
and increasing the quality of medical
services worldwide.
14 M2M Journal 04 | 06/10
Integrating cellular embedded modules into
technology solutions used in the healthcare
system will enable faster exchanges
of medical information. This seamless and
secure transmission of information between
health care professional and hospital,
care facility and even patient may reduce
health expenditures and increase possible
scenarios for home care in the future.
Why wireless?
The ability to transmit patient data over a
cellular wireless network gives medical
practitioners instant access to patient
information, including real-time test results
and feedback on health issues. In the
long-term treatment of chronic diseases,
this gives the practitioner efficient tools
for optimizing intervention timing and
prioritizing care between several patients.
It also provides the ability to identify urgent
issues in real time and react accordingly,
and to identify and reach out to patients
who are not complying with care.
Typical uses include
X Remote monitoring of patients
with implantable devices
X Remote treatment of chronic disease
X Wellness and preventive medicinal
solutions
X Telemedicine services for patients
and professionals
X Medical data on web-based platforms
For patients with chronic illnesses, wireless
transmission of patient information
facilitates the connection to their
caregivers, which can ultimately improve
the quality of care.
Information security
and remote upgrade
Wireless technology ensures a highly
reliable connection, so health-care
practitioners can transfer sensitive and
proprietary medical documents and
information securely and efficiently
from wherever they are working. Cellular
encryption technology, communication
protocols used for the Internet and
other similar networks (TCP / IP stack),
cryptographic protocols at the transport
layer (SSL), and virtual private networks
(VPN) all make data travelling over the
cellular network seamless and secure.
Embedded wireless modules used in
medical systems should provide the
ability to remotely upgrade the software
of the system. This not only adds value to
the medical products, but also translates
into operating cost saving and improved
quality of service for both the patient and
the caregiver.
NetModule was able to use their knowledge
of achievable high processing
power for fast processing of signals in
the development of mobile ultrasound
analyzers for veterinary medicine.
Die portablen Analysegeräte Ibex Lite und
von NetModule und E.I. Medical und
ermöglichen mobile Ultraschalluntersuchung
in der Veterinärmedizin und professionellen
der spezifischen Produktanforderungen
sparte die FPGA-Expertise von NetModule
den Entwicklern wertvolle Zeit, da die Verarbeitung
der für Ultraschallsignale erforderlichen
hohen Rechenleistung derzeit
nur mit FPGAs effizient erfolgen kann. Beide
Geräte sind extrem leicht, kostengüns-
tig, platzsparend und energieeffizient. Die
batteriebetriebenen Modelle funktionieren
in rauer, teilweise verschmutzter Umgebung
(Stall) bei Temperaturen von -20 °C
bis +50 °C problemlos über mehrere Stunden.
Dabei sind sie belastungsarm für die
untersuchten Tiere, liefern ein schnelles
Ergebnis bei hoher Präzision und trumpfen
mit niedrigen Kosten auf. Dank der hohen
Bildqualität und der problemlosen Auswertung
können die Züchter ihre Ergebnisse
unmittelbar vor Ort selbst kontrollieren
und sparen damit wertvolle Zeit.
Ibex Lite, ein Analysegerät für einfachere
Anwendungen, wiegt nur rund
1,6 kg und ist in einem Gehäuse mit
IP67 Schutzklasse (staubdicht, wasserdicht
gegen zeitweiliges Untertauchen)
untergebracht. Zur Ausstattung
zählt ein Video Headset mit 640 x 480
Pixel auflösung (VGA), um Ultraschallbilder
und Benutzerführung darzustellen.
Optional kann man dieses Video
Headset auch bei Ibex Pro einsetzen,
etwa bei starker Sonneneinstrahlung.
Ibex Pro zielt auf erweiterte Anwendungen
ab, wiegt lediglich 2,6 kg
und steckt in einem Gehäuse mit
IP56 Schutzklasse (staubgeschützt,
dicht gegen starke Wasserstrahlung).
Ein Farb-LCD-Display mit 640 x 480
Pixelauflösung (VGA) stellt die Ultraschallbilder
und deren Auswertungen
dar und wird zur Benutzerführung
verwendet.
Momentan arbeitet man an einer Erweiterung
der Ultraschallmethodik für den
Einsatz der Geräte in der Humanmedizin.
Anwendungsbereiche finden sich beispielsweise
bei Rettungseinsätzen, im
Militärbereich oder bei Noteinsätzen der
Polizei und Feuerwehr. Vor der Marktein-
Ibex Pro, in cases of strong sunlight
for example.
Ibex Pro is geared towards advanced
(VGA) shows the ultrasound images
and their analysis and is used for user
guidance.
führung müssen die Geräte noch zertifiziert
werden – denn für die Humanmedizin
gelten deutlich strengere Maßstäbe;
insbesondere in den USA erfolgt die
Zulassung nach Kriterien der FDA (Food
and Drug Administration), der amerikanischen
Überwachungsbehörde für Lebens-
mittel und medizinische Produkte. Die
Zertifizierung ist bereits in vollem Gange,
so dass man in der ersten Jahreshälfte
2010 mit der Markteinführung rechnet.
The portable analyzer Ibex Lite and Ibex
Pro, derived from the cooperation between
NetModule and EI Medical, enable mobile
ultrasound in veterinary medicine and
professional animal breeding. With
the realization of the specific product
requirements, the FPGA expertise of
NetModule saved the developers valuable
time , because the processing required for
high performance ultrasound signals can
currently only be undertaken efficiently
with FPGAs. Both units are extremely
light, inexpensive, compact and energy
efficient. The battery-powered models
operate in harsh, sometimes dirty
environments (stables) at temperatures
ranging from -20 ° C to +50 ° C for several
hours without problems. They are lowstress
for the examined animals, deliver
quick results with high precision and
triumph with their low cost. Thanks to
the high image quality and easy image
evaluation the breeders can control their
results themselves directly on site and
thus save valuable time.
Currently an extension of the ultrasound
methodology for the use of the devices
in human medicine is being worked
on. Example application areas are in
rescue operations, in the military field
or in emergencies involving the police
and fire department. Before entering
the market the devices must be certified
– since significantly stricter standards
prevail for human medicine; particularly
in the USA where the approval is based
on criteria from the FDA (Food and Drug
Administration), the American authority
for food and medical products. The
certification is already in full swing, so
that the market launch can be expected in
the first half of 2010.
Eine ausfallsichere Technologie für
Anwendungen, die Leben retten können
Self-Healing Technology Used
in Life Saving Applications
As the senior living industry continues to grow, so does the need for advanced technology
in communication, safety and security. XBee ZigBee Modules are used in
assisted living communities to connect residents’ homes, emergency call pendants.
Will man aber bestehende Systeme weiter
ausbauen oder modernisieren, so gestaltet
sich die Verlegung von Kabeln manchmal
ziemlich schwierig. Tel-Tron hat daher
nach einer zuverlässigen Funktechnologie
gesucht und sich für Mischnetze in ZigBee-
Technologie entschieden. Das Unternehmen
kam zu dem Schluss, dass die selbst
heilende, immer den geeigneten Knoten
suchende Natur der ZigBee-Technologie für
seine Anwendungen die zuverlässigste Lösung
darstellte. Die Wahl fiel daher auf die
XBee ZigBee-Module von Digi International.
Im Notrufsystem von Tel-Tron tragen die
zu betreuenden Bewohner rund um die
Uhr einen Anhänger mit Notrufsender.
Über den Anhänger können die Bewohner
Hilfe herbeirufen, falls sie stürzen oder
in anderen Notfällen Hilfe benötigen. Darüber
hinaus kann die Infrastruktur zur
Übermittlung von Feuer- und Sicherheitsalarmen
genutzt werden. Wird ein Alarm
ausgelöst oder drückt ein Bewohner den
Knopf seines Anhängers, so wird ein Funksignal
an einen Empfänger gesendet, der
diese Information seinerseits an die vom
Notfallteam überwachten Geräte weitergibt.
In der drahtgebundenen Ausführung
sind die Empfänger über CAT 5-Kabel mit
der Überwachungszentrale vernetzt. In
der Funkversion ist jeder Empfänger mit
einem Xbee-Modul ausgestattet, das die
Funkkommunikation zwischen Empfänger
und Leitstelle gewährleistet. Wenn jemand
einen Herzinfarkt erleidet oder hinfällt
und sich z. B. den Oberschenkel bricht, so
muss ein Hilferuf fehlerfrei funktionieren.
Deshalb kommt nur ein Anbieter in Frage,
der höchste Zuverlässigkeit garantieren
kann. Die Empfänger werden so installiert,
dass im Empfangsbereich des jeweiligen
Senders ein redundanter Empfang gewährleistet
ist. Sender müssen über mehrere
Strecken zu mehreren Empfängern verfügen
können. Dadurch wird die Systemintegrität
auch bei Ausfall eines einzelnen
Knotens abgesichert.
„Selbstheilungskräfte“ gehören zu den
Schlüsselfunktionen eines ZigBee-Mischnetzes.
Mischnetze verfügen von Natur aus
über eine dezentrale Struktur; jeder Knoten
bahnt sich seine eigene Verbindung und
kann sich nach Bedarf mit anderen Knoten
selbst verbinden. Ein ZigBee-Mischnetz
kann sich daher selbst reparieren, wenn ein
Knoten ausfällt oder ein Kommunikationskanal
zusammenbricht.
Eine starke Partnerschaft
Im November 2008 wurden erstmals auf
Funktechnologien basierende Installationen
realisiert. Mittlerweile sind sieben verschiedene,
auf XBee-Technologie basierende
Funkkonfigurationen im Einsatz. Eines der
Projekte deckt mit 165 XBee ZigBee-Knoten
eine Fläche von mehr als 400.000 qm ab.
Dafür benötigt man nicht nur eine erstklassige
Technologie, sondern muss diese auch
hinsichtlich der jeweiligen Installation optimieren.
Digi hat seine XBee-Module mit
einem Funktionsumfang und einer Funktionalität
ausgestattet, die sicherstellen,
dass neben allen Spezifikationen auch die
kritischen Kommunikationsanforderungen
erfüllt werden. Digi engagiert sich aktiv für
seine Kunden, was sich nicht zuletzt in einer
Optimierung der Produkte für den Einsatz
in Nischenanwendungen ausdrückt. Gleich
ob Firmware-Support oder Gehäusetechnologie,
das Unternehmen weiß um die Anwendung
seiner Produkte beim Kunden und
baut auf hohe Flexibilität und erstklassigen
Kundendienst – denn was am Ende ganz alleine
zählt, ist der Erfolg des Kunden.
Whether the need is a state-of-theart
emergency call system for a new
community, or an upgrade for an existing
property, Tel-Tron designs, installs and
maintains emergency call systems for the
senior living industry.
Until recently, the wireless receiver was
wired to the emergency call server. Because
their systems relay life-saving information,
the company believed that wired systems
were the only solution reliable enough
for this critical communication. However,
when installing retrofits or upgrades to
existing properties, running cables can
e extremely difficult. Tel-Tron had been
looking for a reliable wireless technology
for years and finally chose ZigBee mesh
technology. The company determined
the self-healing, node-hopping nature of
ZigBee technology was the most reliable
solution for its needs and selected Digi
International’s XBee ZigBee modules.
XBees provide reliability for
mission-critical application
In a Tel-Tron emergency call system,
assisted living community residents each
carry a pendant 24/7. The pendant allows
the resident to call for help if he / she falls
or needs any kind of emergency assistance.
Additionally, fire, security and other safety
alarms are scattered throughout the
community. When an alarm is triggered or
a resident presses the button on his / her
pendant, a wireless signal is sent to a receiver
which communicates this information back
to the control equipment being monitored
by emergency response personnel. In the
wired version, the receivers are connected
to the control equipment using CAT 5
cable. In the wireless set up, each receiver
includes an XBee module to enable wireless
communication between the receiver and
the control equipment.
If someone has a heart attack or someone
falls down and breaks a hip, a call for help is
not an optional communication, but rather
it has to be fail-safe, therefore a reliable
vendor is vital. The receivers are positioned
to create redundancies within range of each
transmitter. Multiple receivers allow for
multiple routes back to the transmitter. This
maintains system integrity if any node fails.
Self-healing is an important feature of a
ZigBee mesh network. Mesh networks are
decentralized in nature; each node is selfrouting
and able to connect to other nodes
as needed. This allows a ZigBee mesh
network to repair itself if there is any node
failure or communication breakdown.
A strong partnership
The first wireless installation was deployed
in November 2008 and currently seven
wireless configurations are installed
that feature XBee technology. One of the
installations features 165 XBee ZigBee
nodes scattered over 100 acres. They not
only needed good technology, but also
proper layout of the technology. Digi added
features and functionality to the XBee
modules to ensure it met their specifications
and critical communication needs. Digi is
actively interested in its customers and make
permanent enhancements to their products
to allow niche applications. Whether
firmware support or physical packaging,
they understand how people are using
their products and are flexible, helpful and
interested in their customers’ success.
Talk2M – Remote Control for Health
The IBA Company of Belgium is a leading global provider of solutions for the diagnosis
and treatment of cancer. This includes particle accelerators for the production
of radiopharmaceuticals. In order to enable a more hygienic and safer production of
fluorine-Deoxyglykose (FDG), the new Rhodotron particle accelerator will be monitored
using the remote maintenance solution Talk2M in conjunction with the eWON
hardware from Wachendorff.
In der Universitätsklinik von Gand, Belgien,
ist ein solcher Teilchenbeschleuniger
von IBA im Einsatz. Er dient zur Produktion
von FDG, einem Glucoseabkömmling, der
in den Zuckerstoffwechsel von Tumoren
eingeschleust wird. FDG kann vor und nach
der Therapie zur Verlaufskontrolle eingesetzt
werden. Damit gelingt es, Tumore
nachzuweisen oder auszuschließen.
Im Falle eines vermeintlichen oder tatsächlichen
Maschinenfehlers oder bei sonstigen
Fragen, möchte IBA schnellstmöglich
zur Stelle sein. Die bisher 80 ausgelieferten
Teilchenbeschleuniger sind weltweit
an verschiedensten Produktionsstandorten
und in Kliniken verteilt. Mit Talk2M
kann innerhalb weniger Sekunden auf sie
zugegriffen werden.
Um die Vorteile einer Fernwartungslösung
wie Talk2M zu erkennen, muss man
die Struktur des Teilchenbeschleunigers
verstehen: Im Universitätskrankenhaus
von Gand ist der Teilchenbeschleuniger
Cy clone 18 / 9 aufgrund von Sicherheitsmaßnahmen
in einem Bunker untergebracht.
An diesem Ort werden mit Hilfe
von nuklearen Reaktionen Radioisotope
produziert. Der Bunker wird von einem
Kontrollraum aus überwacht. Dort stehen
Schaltschränke für die Versorgung der Magnete,
die Steuerung der Radiofrequenzen
sowie weiteres technisches Equipment zur
Bedienung.
Fehler konnten bis dato nur von diesem
Kontrollraum aus an Ort und Stelle behoben
werden – basierend einzig auf
Informationen aus Kontrolllampen und
Displays. Die Informationen waren jedoch
oft nur sehr bruchstückhaft und wenig hilfreich.
Um den After-Sales-Service zu verbessern
und die hohen Reisekosten zu reduzieren,
entschied man sich für eine Fernwartungslösung.
Die Talk2M-Lösung revolutionierte
den Arbeitsalltag bei IBA. Ein großer
Vorteil ist außerdem, dass mehrere autorisierte
Personen, von verschiedenen
Standorten aus, gleichzeitig auf dieselbe
Maschine zugreifen und die Fehlerdiagnose
stellen sowie Gegenmaßnahmen einleiten
können.
18 M2M Journal 04 | 06/10
Die Talk2M Lösung
Talk2M ist ein etablierter Internetservice,
mit bereits mehr als 6.000 Teilnehmern,
der im Zusammenspiel mit den Fernwartungsmodulen
eWON eine optimale Möglichkeit
zur Fernüberwachung von Maschinen
und Anlagen bietet.
Durch die Nutzung der VPN-Tunnel-Technik
werden die Daten absolut sicher und gegen
jeden Zugriff von Außen geschützt übertragen.
Bestehende IT-Sicherheitsrichtlinien
bei den Anwendern bleiben davon unberührt,
da lediglich Standard-Ports verwendet
werden und nicht erst aufwändig
Firewalls oder ähnliche Sicherheitsmechanismen
angepasst werden müssen.
IBA installierte am Standort Gand ein
Fernwartungsmodul eWON 2005CD. Dieses
Modul wurde über den WAN-Port und
einen DSL-Router mit dem Internet verbunden,
so dass eine Verbindung zum Talk2M-
Server hergestellt werden konnte. Künftig
sollen UMTS/HSDPA-Geräte eingesetzt
werden.
Auf der LAN-Seite ist Talk2M mit einer IP-
Webcam verbunden, welche im Kontrollraum
platziert ist. Daneben sind Talk2M
und eWON mit der S7-Steuerung und dem
Kontroll-PC verbunden.
Weiterhin hat IBA einen intelligenten
Alarmservice per SMS installiert, welcher
mit Hilfe des im eWON eingebauten
Servicearbeiten an einem Teilchenbeschleuniger
in der Universitätsklinik
Gand, bei dem eine ethernetbasierende
Fernwartungslösung von Wachendorff
zum Einsatz kommt.
nutzen die IBA-Kunden und der hauseigene
Kundendienst, um Reaktionszeiten zu
verkürzen und um zustandsgesteuerte,
vorbeugende Wartungen durchzuführen
(Condition-Monitoring).
This type of particle accelerator from IBA
is being used at the University Hospital of
Ghent, Belgium. It is used to produce FDG,
a glucose derivative, which is introduced
into the sugar metabolism of tumors. FDG
can be applied for follow-up before and
after treatment. This makes it possible to
prove the possibility of tumors or to rule
them out.
In the case of a perceived or actual
equipment failure or any other queries,
IBA wants to be on the spot as quickly as
possible. The 80 particle accelerators
delivered to date are distributed worldwide
to various production plants and hospitals,
and can be accessed with Talk2M within
seconds.
In order to realize the benefits of a remote
maintenance solution like Talk2M, the
structure of the particle accelerator must
be understood: For safety reasons the
Cyclone 18/9 particle accelerator in the
University Hospital of Ghent is placed in a
bunker. Here radioisotopes are produced
with the help of nuclear reactions. The
bunker is monitored from a control room,
where switch cabinets power the magnets,
and control the radio frequencies and
other technical equipment for operation.
Until now, faults could only be corrected
in this control room – based solely on
information from control lights and
displays. The information, however,
was often very fragmentary and not very
helpful.
A remote maintenance solution was
decided upon, in order to improve
after-sales service and to reduce the
high cost of travel. The Talk2M solution
revolutionized the normal work life at IBA.
A great advantage is also that several
authorized persons can simultaneously
access the same machine from different
locations to troubleshoot and to initiate
countermeasures.
The Talk2M solution
Talk2M is an established Internet service
with more than 6,000 participants, which
in conjunction with the eWON remote
modules offers a great opportunity for
remote monitoring of machines and
equipment.
By using VPN tunnel technology, the
data is transmitted reliably and protected
against any access from outside. Existing
IT security policies among the users
remain unaffected, since only standard
ports are used and expensive firewalls or
similar security mechanisms do not have
to be adapted.
IBA installed the remote administration
module eWON 2005CD at the Ghent site.
This module has been connected to the
Internet through the WAN port and a DSL
router, so that a connection could be
made to the Talk2M server. In the future,
UMTS/HSDPA devices will be used.
On the LAN side Talk2M is connected to an
IP webcam, which is placed in the control
room. Beside it, Talk2M and eWON are
connected with the S7 controller and the
control PC.
Furthermore, IBA has installed an
intelligent alarm service via SMS, which is
realized by using the built-in eWON GSM
module. IBA's customers use this service
and the in-house customer service to
shorten response times and to perform
preventive maintenance (condition
monitoring).
eHealth – ein
Wachstumsmarkt für
M2M-Communication!
eHealth – a Growth Market
for M2M Communication!
Die Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg
führte Ende 2009 ein Forschungsprojekt
zum Thema M2M-Communication
im Bereich eHealth in
Zusammenarbeit mit der Cinterion
Wireless Modules GmbH durch.
The Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University
carried out a research project
in cooperation with the Cinterion
Wireless Modules GmbH regarding
M2M communication in the
eHealth field at the end of 2009.
Insgesamt wurden 20 Interviews mit Ansprechpartnern
von Krankenhäusern,
Krankenkassen, Herstellern von M2M Applikationen
und Verbänden geführt. Ziel
des Projekts war es, den stark fragmentierten
eHealth Markt hinsichtlich Anwendungsbereichen
und zukünftigen Entwicklungen
zu untersuchen.
Aus der Befragung ging hervor, dass M2M-
Communication derzeit hauptsächlich zur
Überwachung von Kardiologie-Werten in
der ambulanten und stationären Betreuung
verwendet wird. Auch in der innerbetrieblichen
Organisation (z.B. Touren- und
Dienstplanung) gewinnt diese Technologie
zunehmend an Bedeutung. Als die wichtigsten
Ziele wurden Prozessoptimierung
und Verbesserung der Kunden- und Patientenzufriedenheit
genannt. Datenschutz,
Zuverlässigkeit und Sicherheit sind hierbei
die zentralen Anforderungen. Rationalisierung
und Umsatzsteigerung spielten
hingegen eine eher untergeordnete Rolle.
Die größte Hürde bei der Einführung der
drahtlosen Kommunikation sind die hohen
Investitionskosten. Hier sind die
Krankenhäuser auf die Unterstützung der
Krankenkassen angewiesen. Die befragte
Zielgruppe äußerte zudem Unsicherheit
im Umgang mit den gesetzlichen Vorga-
ben. Handlungsbedarf besteht vor allem
in der exakteren Ausgestaltung der rechtlichen
Rahmenbedingungen, wie z.B. Datenschutzrichtlinien,
Zertifizierung und
bundesweite Standards.
Die Ansprechpartner der Befragung gehen
davon aus, dass der zukünftige Schwerpunkt
der Datenübertragung bei Bildern
und Grafiken liegen wird, wobei auch
gleichzeitig mit einer erheblichen Steigerung
der Datenübertragungshäufigkeit
und des Datenvolumens zu rechnen ist.
Neue Anwendungen im Gesundheitswesen
erfordern auch den Aus- und Aufbau einer
leistungsfähigen Infrastruktur. Die Netzbetreiber
investieren daher bereits heute
erkennbar in Glasfasernetze. Es ist davon
auszugehen, dass die Erweiterung des
Glasfasernetzes in den nächsten Jahren
zusätzliche Wachstumsimpulse verspricht.
A total of 20 interviews were conducted
with contacts from hospitals, health insurers,
manufacturers of M2M applications
and associations. The aim of the project
was to investigate the highly fragmented
market in terms of eHealth applications
and future developments.
The survey showed that M2M communication
is currently mainly used for surveillance
of cardiology data for outpatient
and inpatient care. This technology is also
becoming increasingly important in internal
company organization (e.g. tours and
service planning). Process optimization
and improvement of customer and patient
satisfaction were mentioned as the most
important objectives, and here privacy,
reliability and security are the key requirements.
Rationalization and revenue, on
the other hand, played only a subordinate
role.
Ziele der Einführung von M2M
Aims of the implementation of M2M
The biggest hurdle for the introduction of
wireless communication is the high investment
costs. In this case the hospitals must
rely on the support of the health insurance
companies. The target group interviewed
also expressed uncertainty in dealing with
the legal requirements. There is a need for
action particularly concerning the exact definition
of the legal framework, such as with
data privacy policies, certification, and federal
standards.
Webbasierte Überwachung dezentraler
Fernwirkstationen
Web-based Monitoring of Distributed
Remote Control Stations
Der Einsatz webbasierter Technologien eröffnet unter Verwendung von Standards neue
Methoden zur weltweiten Überwachung von Bauwerken sowie der bedarfsorientierten
und vorausschauenden Instandhaltung.
The use of web-based technologies using standards opens up new methods for the
global monitoring of buildings as well as demand-orientated and predictive maintenance.
Durch den Einsatz eines Web-Portals lassen
sich die Kosten für Anschaffung und
Betrieb der Anlagen deutlich senken. Bei
Nutzung von Sicherheitsstandards lässt
sich weiterhin die Kommunikation gegen
unbefugten Zugriff schützen.
Das vorgestellte Projekt ist ein Beispiel für
den Trend zum „Fernwirken mittels Internet“
respektive zur webbasierten Prozessüberwachung
und -steuerung in der Wasserwirtschaft.
Innovative Kommunikation
Bei der Einführung des neuen Prozessleitsystems
HydroDat V8 der Stadtentwässerung
Frankfurt am Main wurden alle vorhandenen
und über analoge Wählleitungen
an die zentrale Leitstelle angekoppelten 67
Sonderbauwerke auf moderne GPRS-Übertragung
mit Internet-Technologie umgestellt.
Leistungsfähige
Embedded-Steuerung
Die Umwandlung der Prozesssignale
in das TCP / IP-Protokoll übernehmen Embedded-Steuerungen
vom Typ HST Tele-
Matic SMART-200, die SPS- und Industrie-
PC-Technologie in einem Gerät vereinen.
Im Gegensatz zu anderen Ansätzen, bei denen
das TCP / IP-Protokoll bereits in einem
intelligenten Modem in ein serielles Protokoll
gewandelt wird, steht es im TeleMatic-
System transparent bis in die Steuerung
zur Verfügung.
Als vorteilhaft erweist sich, dass die Online-
und die Archivdaten in der Software getrennt
verarbeitet werden. Auf diese Weise lassen
sich alle zu archivierenden Messdaten direkt
auf der Unterstation nach dem Delta-Event-
Verfahren bis zu 6 Monate speichern und bei
Verbindung automatisch an das Prozessleitsystem
übermitteln. Das umfangreiche und
frei parametrierbare Archivierungsverfahren
kommt ohne Verdichtung aus, ist somit verlustfrei
und bildet die Grundlage für eine optimale
Analyse des Prozesses.
Hohe Investitionssicherheit
Die Offenheit des Systems wird gesichert,
indem die angekoppelten Embedded-
Steuerungen ihre Daten über OPC mit dem
Prozessleitsystem austauschen. Über diese
Schnittstelle lassen sich weitere Prozesse
in das Prozessleitsystem integrieren oder
die Prozessdaten der HST-Stationen an ein
anderes Visualisierungssystem übertragen.
Die konventionelle Fernwirktechnik wird
im Abwasserbereich zunehmend durch
die Vermaschung lokaler Netze mit Web-
Technologie verdrängt. Da bei Änderungen
beispielsweise des Übertragungswegs die
grundlegende Kommunikationsstruktur
unverändert bleibt, ist eine weitgehende
Zukunftssicherheit und damit Investitionssicherheit
gegeben.
Sichere Kommunikation
Alle mit GPRS angebundenen TeleMatic-
Stationen kommunizieren quasi in Echtzeit
über eine vom GPRS-Provider bereitgestellte
VPN-Verbindung verschlüsselt mit
dem Prozessleitsystem in der Zentrale, die
mit einem VPN-Router ausgestattet ist.
Kosten sparen durch Verwendung
eines Web-Portals
Um Kosten zu sparen, kann beim Betreiber
alternativ zur eigenen Zentrale auf
ein im Internet erreichbares Web-Portal
zugegriffen werden. Dieses webbasierte
Überwachungssystem bietet einfache
Leitsystemfunktionalitäten, wie z. B. das
Überwachen und Bedienen der Pumpwerke
und das Auswerten der erfassten
Daten. Weiterhin wird eine Störmeldealarmierung
zur Verfügung gestellt. Das
Portal selbst wird in einem Rechenzentrum
betrieben, das die notwendige Kommunikationsstruktur
zur Verfügung stellt
und eine hohe Ausfallsicherheit gewährleistet.
Die einzelnen Fernwirkstationen sind
über den jeweiligen GPRS-Provider gesichert
durch VPN und Verschlüsselung mit
dem Internet verbunden. Da der Server
des Web-Portals ebenfalls eine ständige
Verbindung zum Internet besitzt, kann
die Fernwirkstation die erfassten Daten
direkt zum Server übertragen, wo die Daten
archiviert werden. In der Zentrale werden
die Fernwirkstationen wiederum per
OPC-Server an das Überwachungssystem
angebunden. So ist sichergestellt, dass
Fernwirkstationen diverser Hersteller eingesetzt
werden können. Die Kommunikation
zwischen Außenstation und Zentrale
erfolgt internetbasiert mittels GPRS,
UMTS, EDGE, DSL o. ä.
Der Anwender kann von seinem Arbeitsplatz
per Browser über das Internet auf
das eigentliche Web-Portal zugreifen. Die
Daten werden nutzerabhängig angezeigt
und stehen als tabellarische Übersicht,
Meldebuch, Ganglinie oder animiertes
Prozessbild zur Verfügung.
So wird eine kostengünstige Anbindung
von Fernwirkstationen realisiert. Es
entstehen keine Investitionskosten für
die Datenzentrale, ein aufwendiger Beschaffungsvorgang
und administrative
M2M Journal 04 | 06/10 21
Anwendungen und Referenzen Applications and References
Aufwände auf Seite des Anwenders entfallen.
Die Abrechnung erfolgt monatlich
als Providing-Gebühr, wodurch die Unterhaltungskosten
gering und kalkulierbar
bleiben.
The costs for purchasing and operating
equipment are significantly reduced by
using a web portal. The use of security
standards can continue to protect communication
from unauthorized access.
The proposed project is an example of the
trend towards "remote control via Internet"
with respect to web-based process monitoring
and control in water management.
Innovative communication
With the introduction of the new HydroDat
V8 process control system for urban drainage
in Frankfurt am Main, all 67 existing
special structures that had been linked via
analog dial-up lines to the central control
station were changed to modern GPRS
transmission with Internet technology.
Powerful embedded control
The transformation of the process signals
into the TCP/IP protocol incorporate HST
Telematic SMART-200 embedded controllers
which combine the PLC and industrial
PC technology in one device. Unlike other
approaches, where the TCP/IP protocol is
already being changed by an intelligent
22 M2M Journal 04 | 06/10
modem into a serial protocol, it stays
available in the TeleMatic-System and
transparent all the way to the controls.
It has been proven to be an advantage that
the online and archive data is processed
separately in the software. This way, all
measurement data which is to be archived
can be directly saved onto the substation
for up to 6 months after the delta-event procedure
and upon connection can automatically
be sent to the process control system.
The extensive and freely configurable archiving
procedure needs no compression,
is therefore loss-free and forms the basis
for an optimal analysis of the process.
High investment security
The openness of the system is secured in
such that the coupled embedded controls
exchange their data by way of the OPC with
the process control system. This interface
allows other processes to be integrated
into the process control system or the process
data of the HST stations to be transferred
into another visualization system.
Conventional remote control technology in
the field of wastewater is being increasingly
replaced through the meshing of local
networks with web technology. Since the
basic communication structure remains
the same when there are changes such as
the transmission path, a safe and sure investment
for the future is assured.
Secure communications
All TeleMatics stations connected with
GPRS communicate virtually in real time
from a VPN connection furnished by a
GPRS provider and are encrypted with the
process control system at the control center,
which is equipped with a VPN router.
Kommunikation zwischen GPRS-Station,
Server und Anwendungsclients.
Communication between the GPRS
station, server and application clients.
Save costs by using a web portal
To save costs, the operator can alternatively
access a web portal at his own control
center. This web-based monitoring system
provides simple control functions, such as
how to monitor and operate the pumping
stations, and how to evaluate the data collected.
Furthermore a malfunction alarm is
available. The portal itself is operated from
a data center, which provides the necessary
communication structure and ensures
high reliability. Each of the remote control
stations are securely connected with the
Internet via the respective GPRS provider
by means of VPN and encryption. Because
the web portal’s server also has a permanent
link to the Internet, the remote station
can transmit the collected data directly to
the server to be archived. At the control
center, the remote control stations are connected
again via OPC server to the monitoring
system. This ensures that remote control
stations of various manufacturers can
be used. The communication between the
panel and control center is Internet-based
and occurs via GPRS and UMTS, EDGE,
DSL, etc. The user can access the web
portal with a browser from his workplace
through the Internet. The data is displayed
in a user-dependent manner and is available
as tabular overview, message archive,
time variation curve, or animated image
process.
Thus, a cost-effective connectivity is realized
by remote control stations. There are
no investment costs for the data center
and there are no complex purchasing processes
or administrative expenses for the
user. Invoicing occurs as a fee on a monthly
basis, rendering the maintenance costs
low and predictable.
This web portal is available on the market
at the end the first quarter of 2010 for all
those who want to monitor small decentralized
systems and machines economically.
T-City of Telekom in and around
Friedrichshafen offers doctors and patients
the diabetes management system
GlucoTel. The mobile innovative telemedicine
system is available in the framework
of a joint pilot project from Telekom
and BodyTel in T-City. GlucoTel is prima-
rily a blood glucose meter for measuring
blood glucose levels of the patient as usual.
At the same time it is part of the telemedical
blood glucose monitoring and
diabetes management system GlucoTel.
The meter transmits each measurement
via Bluetooth to a standard mobile phone,
which sends the result automatically by
Telekoms’ mobile network to the personal
online diary in the BodyTel Center at
www.bodytel.com. There, the results are
stored safely, long-term and clearly displayed.
Additionally, patients can enter information
such as recorded carbohydrate
units, additionally administered insulin or
other events – such as doctor visits, stress
and physical activity – per mobile phone
or online using the computer. It is important
to note that the web portal has the
same safety standards as online banking.
Automatic alarm
With the help of the transferred and entered
data, a long-term and complete
electronic health record is created in the
BodyTel Centre. Via a personal password
both the patient and authorized representatives
can enter the personal portal area.
There they can view their own data as well
as any data for which they have access.
If desired, critical value limits can be determined
and stored by doctors and other
caretakers in the BodyTel Centre for each
patient, which directly trigger an alarm by
e-mail, fax or SMS when exceeded. Once
alarm rules have been set, an automatic
comparison of the incoming value of the
defined target area takes place. In addition,
the alarm message can be sent automatically
to trusted third parties such as
relatives, family doctors or clinics specializing
in diabetics.
The patient decides to whom he wants to
allow access to his diary and he may waive
the right at any time. The entrusted third
parties authorized by the patient decide
whether and how they want to be alerted.
So the system is directed towards the individual
needs of the patient and can facilitate
the responsible handling of the
disease by the patient, the relatives and
the doctor.
countries to date, including Korea and
Japan, with complete service coverage.
X A Canadian provider of two-way satellite
communications technology, Sky-
Wave Mobile Communications, chose
the M2M Zone at CeBIT to announce
the availability of GLONASS navigation
in its DMR-800L satellite terminal.
The upgraded terminal can compute
its exact location using either or both
GLONASS and GPS systems – the dual
navigation capability will be of benefit
to fleet owners who would like to use
GLONASS but do not want the costs
and reliability issues associated with
the use of an external module.
X Orange Business Services announced
the formation of its International M2M
Center (IMC), to provide global M2M
connectivity for the France Telecom
Group. The ICM will be hosted by the
Orange affiliate Mobistar in Belgium to
provide expertise on M2M consulting,
integration, SIM card developments,
and project management. Orange
also unveiled a dedicated M2M web
portal to allow users to order, activate
and track M2M SIM cards online. The
tool can be integrated into IT systems
through APIs, enabling what is said to
be seamless management.
Die BMWi-geförderten Projekte Smart
Watts und Smart Wheels entwickeln beispielhafte,
eng miteinander abgestimmte
Lösungsmodelle für das Internet der Energie
und intelligente Elektromobilität. Die
gemeinsame Grundlage bildet das BMWi-
Leuchtturmprogramm E-Energy.
Ab Ende 2010 erprobt und demonstriert
ein Feldversuch in und um Aachen die
Praxistauglichkeit der Lösung für Energieversorger
und Kunden sowie den energiewirtschaftlichen
Nutzen des Smart Grids
All solutions that help stabilize the balance
in the energy system are in demand.
The Smart Watts and Smart Wheels projects,
funded by Germany's BMWi (Federal
Ministry of Economics and Technology),
develop exemplary and closely coordinated
solution models for the Internet of
energy and intelligent electric mobility.
The BMWi’s E-Energy lighthouse program
created the projects' common foundation.
Starting at the end of 2010 a field trial in
and around Aachen will test and demonstrate
the practicality of the solution for
energy suppliers and customers as well as
the energy-efficient benefits of the smart
grid concept. The field trial is open for the
inclusion of prototypes and products from
manufacturers that have not previously
participated in the Smart Watts project. Be
there and take advantage of the practical
results first-hand on 29 June, 2010.
