stud. Those that did make the
long journey, usually found it to
be worth their while.
Malcolm liked all dogs, and had
handled German Shepherds, in
the days when they were
known as ‘Alsatians’. He was
always concerned that working
and pastoral breeds should
have the correct conformation,
to be able to perform their intended
role, and he judged
working and pastoral breeds
with this in mind. In order to ascertain
exactly what the role of
Shelties was, Malcolm became
involved in a study of the
breed’s history, which was to
lead to him becoming the
acknowledged historian for the
breed.
His book ‘Shetland Sheepdogs,
An Owners Companion’,
was a basic book for
Sheltie lovers, covering all aspects
of the breed (as directed
by the publishers), but Malcom
became much more involved
with the development of the
breed, and it’s history, and to
this effect, he undertook historical
research, both in the
UK and in the United
States. He spoke on the
origins of the breed at
the English Shetland
Sheepdog Club 2000
conference, and travelled
to the USA, Australia,
and Europe, to
talk to Sheltie breeders,
and to judge the breed.
In the UK he became
involved with the ESSC
training of Judges
scheme and became a
mentor and assessor
for those aspiring to become
judges.
He was a kind and unassuming
man, who
could often be found
outside the show
venue, having a quiet
‘puff’ on his pipe. His
legacy to the breed, is
his work as a historian,
and although he no
longer had any breeding
bitches, his “Hartmere”
line has
descendants, both
through Ch. Haytimer
and Ch. Hallmarked.
