SPATIAL SURVEY AND SPATIAL IMAGE

The new spatial dimensions of the ‘European metropolitan region’ comprise wider
polycentric areas that are neither clearly city nor clearly countryside. Commuter
connections and various forms of interlinking define the expanse of these areas and
everyday realities correspond to these dimensions. In many cases, however, these primarily
functional spatial units are lacking an overarching new spatial understanding, an
‘image’ that generates a sense of belonging, identification and identity. However, this
is important in order to grasp a wider cultural space with distinctive properties. It can
stimulate involvement, initiative and empathetic bonds internally and make distinctive
existing and new qualities visible outwardly. This requires new interpretations and
new notions of the area. Image-based methods of surveying and presenting urban
regions from the perspective of landscape are suggested in the following. With their
systemizing aspects, the methods research and generate knowledge and furthermore,
as phenomenological bases and starting points, can form significant creative platforms
for more context-related spatial designing and planning.
