The NPD Group
Global Toy Industry Report
The latest report reveals highest impact on annual sales came from the US market – The toy
industry experienced best sales performance in a decade, according to The NPD Group
According to The NPD Group’s latest
global toys report, global toy market
sales reached US$ 104.2 billion in 2021, an
increase of 8.5 percent versus 2020, and
12.7 percent versus 2019, making it the
best performance in the last 10 years. As
in 2020, growth was driven by developed
countries with the most impact coming
from the U.S., which saw a year-over-year
increase of 15 percent. Developing markets
started to recover in 2021 but did not
manage to overcome the 2020 decline or
reach pre-pandemic sales levels.
Despite sales growth in 2021, the
Asian market remained behind 2019
sales, with the gap between North
America and Asia increasing five times
compared to 2019. However, even with a
slow recovery, Asia is the second fastest
growing region when compared to 2016,
increasing 11 percent. North America
experienced the fastest growth, increasing
51 percent since 2016. Growth was
driven by strong performance of the 10
largest markets, with these 10 countries
representing 76 percent of global sales
in 2021. The toy market remains very
concentrated within the U.S. and China,
both capturing close to 50 percent of global
sales. The global spend per child aged
0 – 9 increased to US$ 59, up from US$ 56
in 2020. Spend per child in Asia, Africa,
and South America remains below the
global average.
“The global toy market’s unprecedented
growth in 2021 was driven by sales
in developed countries, which were
better equipped to face the pandemic
thanks to strong government support, as
well as easier and earlier access to vaccinations,”
said Frédérique Tutt, global
toys industry analyst at The NPD Group.
“However, we don’t anticipate this level
of growth to continue as the global economy
slows down and inflationary pressures
increase.”
Methodology
World markets are measured and estimated
based on The NPD Group’s Consumer
Tracking Service and Retail Tracking Service
from 14 countries currently tracked by
Hasbro
The Civic 50 Honoree
2021 philanthropic support totaled more than $17 million – Making a positive impact for six
million children and adults worldwide
Hasbro has been recognized as a
2021 honoree of The Civic 50 Most
Community-Minded Companies in
America by Points of Light, the world’s
largest organization dedicated to volunteer
service. The Civic 50 honorees are
companies with annual U.S revenues
of at least US$1 billion and are selected
based on four dimensions of corporate
citizenship and social impact programs
– investment, integration, institutionalization,
and impact. This is the 10th consecutive
year that Hasbro has received
this recognition.
Hasbro has a long and proud legacy
of making a positive impact within our
communities. Through our giving, we
support health and stability for children
and families in crisis, provide equitable
access to education, empower the
next generation of storytellers through
creative skill development and provide
the Gift of Play through donations
of toys and games around the world.
In 2021, Hasbro’s philanthropic support
exceeded US$17 million, including
both financial contributions and
donations of more than 750,000 toys
and games.
The Team Hasbro employee volunteer
program, designed to provide opportunities
for Hasbro employees to make a difference
in the community, engaged 92
percent of employees worldwide in 2021.
Together, Hasbro’s philanthropy made
a meaningful impact for more than six
million children and adults around the
world.
“Corporate leadership and commitment
to civic engagement is critical for
strengthening communities,” said Natalye
Paquin, president & CEO of Points of
Light. “Our most recent global research
shows 86 percent of people say they expect
companies to take action on a social
issue. Companies like Hasbro are leading
the way and setting an example of
how you can leverage your employee talent,
business models and assets to create
deep impact that drives transformational
change.”
