Entstehung des FedCups:
Die Idee zur Austragung eines Wettkampfes zwischen Damenmannschaften,
um die Verständigung im Damentennis
zu fördern, entstand 1919 von Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman.
1923 rief diese den Wightman Cup ins Leben, der einen
jährlichen Länderkampf zwischen den USA und Großbritannien
darstellte. Nach 40 Jahren wurde der erste Federation
Cup (seit 1995 FedCup) im Jahre 1963 zum 50. Geburtstag
der ITF (International Tennis Federation) in London
ausgetragen. Er wurde zwischen 16 Nationen ausgetragen
und dauerte 1 Woche. Ab den 70iger Jahren erhöhte sich
die Teilnehmerzahl durch vermehrtes Sponsoring, so dass
ab 1992 regionale Qualifikationswettbewerbe eingeführt
wurden. 1995 wurde der Name in FedCup geändert und
der Spielmodus dem Davis Cup angepasst (4 Einzel und
1 Doppel; vorher: 2 Einzel und 1 Doppel). Der FedCup ist
der wichtigste Wettbewerb für Nationalmannschaften im
Damentennis und umfasst heute 48 Nationen.

Formation of the Fed Cup
The idea of hosting a competition between women
teams in order to enhance the communication in
women tennis originated in 1919 by Hazel Hotchkiss
Wightman. In 1923 she set up the Wightman
Cup which presents an annual international match
between the US and Great Britain. After 40 years
in the year 1963 on the 50th anniversary of the ITF
(International Tennis Federation) the first Federation
Cup (FedCup since 1995) was held in London.
The decision fell between 16 nations and lasted 1
week. In the seventies the participants increased
due to increased sponsoring, so that from 1992
onwards regional qualification competitions were
established. The name was changed into FedCup
in 1995 and the game mode was adapteded to
the Davis Cup (4 Single and 1 Double; before 2
Single and 1 Double). The FedCup is the most
important competition for national teams in women
tennis and today embraces 48 nations.
Spielmodus:
Der FedCup besteht aus der Weltgruppe I und der Weltgruppe
II, in denen jeweils 8 Nationen an den Start gehen.
Alle anderen Nationen spielen in ihren regionalen Zonengruppen
(Europa/Afrika Zonengruppe I-III, Amerikazonengruppe
I-II, und Asien/Ozeanien Zonengruppe I-II).
Das Turnier wird in drei Spielwochen veranstaltet. Die 4
Verlierer der ersten Runde der Weltgruppe I spielen gegen
einen der 4 Siegerteams der Weltgruppe II um einen Startplatz
in der Weltgruppe I im nächsten Jahr. Die Verlierer
in der Weltgruppe II spielen in der Relegation gegen die
Sieger der jeweiligen Zonengruppen um den Verbleib in
der Weltgruppe II.

Game Mode:
The FedCup consists of the World Group I and
the World Group II in which each 8 nations are
starting. All other nations play in their regional
zone groups (Europe/Africa Zone Group I-III,
America Zone Group I-II and Asia/Oceania
Zone Group I-II).
The tournament is held over three weeks. The
4 losers of the first round of World Group I play
against the 4 winner teams of World Group II for
a starting position in World Group I in the following
year. The losers of World Group II play in
relegation against the respective winners of the
Zone Groups for the continuance in the World
Group II.
