European standard 12642. This revised<br />

draft of the load-securing norm, that will<br />

apply in all 25 EU member states, could<br />

come into effect before the end of the year.<br />

It has two sections: “Standard construction<br />

– Code L” and “Reinforced construction<br />

– Code XL”. According to this regulation,<br />

the vehicle must still “function” after<br />

<strong>im</strong>pact trials. The XL Code stipulates that<br />

the front wall be subjected to an <strong>im</strong>pact<br />

of half the permitted load capacity<br />

(est<strong>im</strong>ated for this purpose at 27 t).<br />

Likewise, the side walls must bear up to 40<br />

percent of the same capacity, while the<br />

rear wall, i.e. the doors, are to be tested<br />

with 30 percent.<br />

Practical durability trials<br />

Although load-securing certification can<br />

quite easily be granted based on<br />

calculations and computer s<strong>im</strong>ulations,<br />

KRONE prefers to do the tests for real. Only<br />

in practical trials, for example, is it possible<br />

to observe precisely what happens to the<br />

rear portals when the front wall is<br />

<strong>im</strong>pacted. All KRONE prototypes that have<br />

ult<strong>im</strong>ately won the coveted safety<br />

certification have been subjected to<br />

practical durability trials in co-operation<br />

with TÜV Nord.<br />

The stringent requirements of the new<br />

European standard can only be met using<br />

entirely new engineering solutions. Under<br />

the new norm, the front and side walls as<br />

well as the rear portal have to be able to<br />

resist <strong>im</strong>pacts of much higher force than<br />

before. Also, the tarpaulin covers now have<br />

a vital role in stabilising the side walls. So<br />

anybody who thinks that tarpaulins only<br />

serve to protect the cargo from wind and<br />

rain is seriously behind the t<strong>im</strong>es. Thorsten<br />

Perk explains his development strategy:<br />

“We need to find ways to make the most<br />

of s<strong>im</strong>ple solutions – the chosen method<br />

has to be cost-effective for the operator<br />

and keep reduction of the load capacity to<br />

a min<strong>im</strong>um.”<br />

tow the new line, although they do, of<br />

course, comply with the current regulations.<br />

These products substantiate Perk’s<br />

prediction that when the new standard<br />

comes into effect, it will create turbulence<br />

on the market. The new formulation may<br />

mean that certain prototypes, currently in<br />

very l<strong>im</strong>ited demand from some customers,<br />

could see their future prospects<br />
