deutscher Vizekonsul in Dubai, das Ja-Wort
in Nervi, Italien. Die standesamtliche Trauung
fand bereits am 23. August im engsten Kreise
in der Botschaft von Benin in Abu Dhabi
statt. Trauzeugen waren dabei der deutsche
Botschafter a.D. haNs-JÜrGeN steltZer und
seine Frau Kirsten. Hans-Burkhard Sauerteig
ist seit Ende 2006 in Dubai tätig und hatte
davor unter anderem das Amt des deutschen
Botschafters in Benin inne.

rajaa alsanea: die girls von riad
Kaum eine Veröffentlichung hat in den letzten Jahren für so viel Wirbel in
der arabischen Welt gesorgt wie der Roman „Die Girls von Riad“ der saudiarabischen
Studentin raJaa alsaNea.
Am Beispiel der Freundinnen Kamra, Sadim, Michelle und Lamis erzählt
die 25-jährige Schriftstellerin die Geschichte von vier Mädchen, deren
Träume und Sehnsüchte zwischen der islamischen und der westlichen
Welt. Hinter den schwarzen Schleiern stecken jungen Frauen mit ganz alltäglichen
Sorgen, die sich einen perfekten Partner und beruflichen Erfolg
wünschen. Dass dabei auch Tabuthemen angesprochen
wurden, stieß in der arabischen Welt auf heftige Reaktionen.
„Die Girls von Riad“ erschien deshalb zuerst
nur im liberalen Libanon, da es von der saudi-arabischen
Zensur verboten wurde. Mittlerweile ist der Roman in
deutscher Übersetzung im Pendo-Verlag erschienen,
und aufgrund des sensationellen Erfolgs im Ausland
durfte das Buch auch in Saudi-Arabien veröffentlicht
werden, wo es sofort zum Bestseller wurde. Rajaa Alsanea
stammt aus einer angesehenen Medizinerfamilie
und lebt momentan in den USA, wo sie ihren Master in
Zahnmedizin macht: „Über Türen schreibe ich, die nicht
geöffnet, über Wünsche, die, kaum geboren, erstickt
werden.“
Für alle deutschen Bücherfreunde gibt es jetzt eine
neue Anlaufstelle in Dubai: Jeden zweiten Mittwoch
im Monat veranstaltet iNes reiMaNN in ihrer Villa in
Al Barsha einen Büchernachmittag zum Ausleihen von
Lese stoff. Nahezu 1000 Bücher aus allen Genres hat die
begeisterte Leserin gesammelt und katalogisiert. Neben deutschen Büchern
werden auch einige englischsprachige Publikationen angeboten. Die
nächsten Büchernachmittage finden am 14. November und 12. Dezember

HARD SAUERtEIG, German Vice-Consul in
Dubai, exchanged vows on September 29,
2007, in Nervi, Italy. The civil ceremony took
place with a small circle of friends on August
23, 2007 at the Benin Embassy in Abu
Dhabi. Witnesses were the German Ambassador,
ret. HANS-JüRGEN StELtZER and his
wife Kirsten. Hans-Burkhard Sauerteig has
been with the German Consulate in Dubai
since the end of 2006; prior to that he was
the German Ambassador to Benin.

rajaa Alsanea’s “The girls from riyadh”
RAJAA ALSANEA, a Saudi Arabian student, has caused quite a stir with
her novel:”The Girls from Riyadh”. There has hardly been this kind of
excitement about a new book hitting the market in the Arab world for
a very long time.
The 25 year old author said the story is based on her friends Kamra,
Sadim, Michelle and Lamis whose dreams and yearnings teeter between
the Islamic and Western worlds. Behind their black veils are young
women with everyday problems who are looking for the perfect partner
and professional success. The book initially received a
negative reaction in Saudi Arabia, because it delves into
taboo subjects. “The Girls from Riyadh” was at first only
published in liberal Lebanon, because Saudi censorship
banned it. The novel is now available in a German translation
through Pendo Publishing and because the book
has received so much acclaim all over the world, Saudi
Arabia agreed to allow its sale there. No surprise that it
became an immediate bestseller.
Rajaa Alsanea comes from a respected family of
health professionals and is currently living in the USA
where she is pursuing her masters in dental medicine.

There is good news for all fans of literature: We have
a new contact point for all German book enthusiasts
in Dubai. Every second Wednesday of the month, from
3:00 to 6:00 PM, INES REIMANN opens her villa in Al
Barsha for a “Book-Afternoon” to readers who want to
borrow or trade books. The nearly 1,000 books cover all genres and are
catalogued. Most books are in German, but some English publications
are available. The next “Book-Afternoon” will take place November 14
and another on December 12.
