Die Republik Libanon umfasst eine Fläche von 10.452 Quadratkilometern
und ist damit nur halb so groß wie das Bundesland Hessen. Das Landschaftsbild
ist sehr abwechslungsreich und lässt sich in vier Zonen unterteilen.
Ein 225 Kilometer langer Küstenstreifen erstreckt sich vom Süden
bis zum Norden des Landes. Die fruchtbare Bekaa-Ebene liegt im Regenschatten
des Libanon-Gebirges und hat als Kornkammer des Landes wirtschaftliche
Bedeutung. Durch künstliche Bewässerung eignet sich das Gebiet
auch ideal zum Weinanbau. Hier liegen die bekannten Weingüter von
Kafraiya und Kasra. Auch der berühmte Arak wird hier gebrannt. Der Antilibanon-Gebirgszug
mit dem Berg Hermon, der eine Höhe von 2.814 Metern
aufweist, bildet die Grenze zu Syrien. Ein weiterer Landschaftsteil ist
das zerklüftete, steile Libanon-Gebirge, das bis zu 3.000 Meter hoch ist.
Das Gebirge zieht sich von Norden nach Süden parallel zum Meer durch
das Land. Die Landschaft hier zählt zu den schönsten im Mittelmeerraum.

Obstgärten überziehen die Berge, die bis in den April hinein schneebedeckt
sind. Damit ergibt sich für Besucher des Libanons die Möglichkeit, morgens
im Gebirge Ski zu fahren und nachmittags im Mittelmeer baden zu gehen.
Der längste Fluss des Landes ist der Hitani. Sein Verlauf erstreckt sich
über 140 Kilometer und liegt vollständig auf libanesischem Staatsgebiet.
So unterschiedlich wie die Landschaft gestaltet sich auch das Klima. An
der Küste herrscht ein mediterranes Klima mit trockenen, warmen Sommern
und regenreichen Wintermonaten. An der Grenze zu Syrien findet
man sehr trockene Bedingungen, das so genannte Steppenklima, welches
die Grenze zu den südlichen Wüstenregionen in Syrien und in Jordanien
bildet. Im Gebirge fallen die meisten Niederschläge in den Wintermonaten,
entsprechend der Höhe dann meistens in Form von Schnee. In
Beirut liegen die Temperaturen bei durchschnittlich 18 Grad im Januar
und 30 Grad in den Monaten Juli und August.

The Republic of Lebanon covers an area of 10,452 square kilometers
and is only half as large as the federal state of Hessen. The landscape
is varied and is divided easily into four zones. The 225 kilometer coastline
stretches from the south to the north of the country.
The fertile region of the Bekaa Valley which lies in the shadows of the
Lebanon Mountains, is considered to be the granary of the country,
and is of great economic importance. With irrigation the area is well
suited for vineyards; this is where the famous vineyards of Kafraiya
and Kasra are located. This is also where the famous Arak is distilled
and bottled. The Antilibanon Mountain Range, with the 2,814 meter
high Mount Hermon, makes up the border with Syria. Another part
of Lebanon’s vista is the craggy and jagged steep Lebanon Mountains
that reach up to more than 3,000 meters and run parallel from north
to south through the land into the Mediterranean. The countryside

here is among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. This incredible
landscape is made up of Pine and cedar forests, terraced olive groves
and fruit orchards that cover the mountainsides, which stay covered
with snow well into April or May. Here the visitors can ski the mountains
in the morning and swim in the Mediterranean in the afternoon.
The longest river is the Litani; it runs for 140 kilometers and never
leaves Lebanon. The climate is as varied as the countryside; the coast
has dry and warm Mediterranean summers and plenty of rainfall
during the winter. The border with Syria has a very arid climate which
is often compared to prairie climate since it borders on to partly desert
regions of Syria and Jordan. Most of the precipitation falls in the
mountains during the winter months, mostly in the form of snow. The
temperatures in Beirut vary from 18 degrees Celsius in January to 30
degrees Celsius in July and August.
