Managing Director Wolfgang Plasser is also convinced of the effectiveness
of the strategy pursued by Lenzing Plastics as a serviceoriented
niche provider. “Lenzing Plastics is fully geared to achieving
growth in promising niche markets, as demonstrated by the
recent takeover of the German plastics producers Hahl and Pedex.“
Hahl is a major European producer of cut plastic filaments for synthetic
bristles, brushes and fabrics. Pedex GmbH is a leading supplier
of special filaments in Germany, particularly for applications in
cosmetics and hygiene. “The acquisition of Hahl at the end of 2006
represents the most significant step in the company’s history to
promote the growth of Lenzing Plastics. The takeover of Pedex in
the spring of 2007 is the next important strategic step, enabling us
to perfectly round off our plastics portfolio,” Plasser adds.
Lenzing Plastics does not intend to limit its future business operations
to plastics. Attractive growth opportunities also exist in carbon
fiber production. Accordingly, at the beginning of 2007, Lenzing
Plastics expanded into the production of carbon fibers, the construction
material of the future. Plasser considers this as a further
strategic move shaping the company’s future business direction.
“Carbon fibers represent an investment in the future par excellence.
Due to their outstanding material properties – extremely high
strength and very low weight – carbon fibers are the ideal material
for everything on the move, from airplanes and cars to racing bicycles.
Already today, the global production capacity in operation
is unable to meet current demand. Annual market growth rates of
10% are expected for the coming years, a trend we naturally aim to
exploit.“ Carbon fibers, once viewed as an “elite material” reserved
for Formula One racing cars and racing yachts, are now used in the
automotive industry, airplane and yacht construction, or in the wind
power sector. Even everyday sports equipment such as ice hockey
knee-pads, sticks and clubs or bicycle frames for light mountain
bikes are also being made today out of carbon fibers. Who knows,
perhaps Hubert Gantioler will not only be equipped with cutting
edge Lenzing PROFILEN ® sportswear at his next triathlon, but also
with a carbon fiber bicycle made by Lenzing Plastics.
After the editorial deadline passed, it was announced that Lenzing Plastics acquired the
Monofilament Division of the US company Glassmaster, enabling Lenzing Plastics to establish
a foothold in the American market and thus strengthen its competitiveness.

Auch Geschäftsführer Wolfgang Plasser ist überzeugt von der Strategie
von Lenzing Plastics als serviceorientierter Nischenanbieter: „Dass
die Weichen bei Lenzing Plastics voll auf Wachstum in zukunftsträchtigen
Nischen gestellt sind, beweisen auch die kürzlich getätigten
Akquisitionen der deutschen Kunststoffhersteller Hahl und Pedex.“
Hahl ist ein bedeutender europäischer Produzent von geschnittenen
Kunststoff­Filamenten für synthetische Bürsten, Borsten und Gewebe;
die Pedex GmbH ist in Deutschland einer der führenden Anbieter
von Spezialfilamenten, vor allem im Bereich Kosmetik und Hygiene.
„Ende 2006 haben wir mit dem Kauf von Hahl den bedeutendsten
Wachstumsschritt in unserer Geschichte gesetzt. Im Frühjahr 2007
folgte mit Pedex der nächste strategisch wichtige Schritt, denn so
wird unser Kunststoff­Portfolio perfekt ergänzt“, so Plasser.
Lenzing Plastics sieht seine Zukunft aber nicht nur im Kunststoffbereich,
attraktive Wachstumschancen bieten sich auch in der Carbonfaserproduktion.
So besiegelte Lenzing Plastics Anfang 2007 den
Einstieg in die Produktion des Zukunftswerkstoffes Carbonfasern, für
Plasser eine weitere strategische Weichenstellung: „Carbonfasern sind
die Investition in die Zukunft schlechthin. Durch ihre herausragenden
Materialeigenschaften – extrem hohe Festigkeit bei sehr geringem Gewicht
– sind Carbonfasern der ideale Werkstoff für alles, was bewegt
werden muss, vom Flugzeug über das Auto bis hin zum Rennfahrrad.
Die weltweit installierten Produktionskapazitäten für Carbonfasern
können die Nachfrage schon jetzt nicht befriedigen. Es wird in diesem
Bereich ein Marktwachstum in den kommenden Jahren von 10% pro
Jahr erwartet – ein Trend, bei dem wir natürlich dabei sein wollen.“
Carbonfasern, früher „Elite­Werkstoff“ für Formel­1­Boliden und
Renn­Yachten, werden heute in der Automobilindustrie, im Flugzeugund
Yachtbau oder in der Windenergieindustrie eingesetzt. Auch
alltägliche Sportgeräte und ­utensilien wie Knieschützer beim Eishockey,
Sportstöcke oder Fahrradrahmen bei Leicht­Mountainbikes
werden heutzutage aus Carbonfasern gefertigt. Wer weiß, vielleicht
wird Hubert Gantioler seinen nächsten Triathlon bereits top ausgerüstet
nicht nur mit Lenzing PROFILEN ® Bekleidung, sondern auch mit
einem Carbon­Fahrrad von Lenzing Plastics bestreiten.
Nach Redaktionsschluss wurde bekannt, dass sich Lenzing Plastics mit dem Kauf der Monofilamentsparte
des US­Unternehmens Glassmaster jetzt auch eine Basis in den USA geschaffen hat,
was die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Lenzing Plastics weiter stärken wird.
